The Sequence Pattern
In this pattern, the main idea tells you about a sequence (things
that happen in order). The paragraph tells you about the events
or the steps of the sequence of event .
*It can be a sequence of events.
Examples: events in the life of a person, dates in history.
*It can also be a sequence of steps in a process.
Examples: instructions for how to do something, directions
for going somewhere.
PRACTICE
A. These paragraphs have a sequence pattern. Read each
paragraph and write
the main idea. Then underline the supporting facts and ideas.
1. The history of the island of Cuba began a very long time ago. The first
people came to the island from South America in about 3,500 B.C.E. They
lived by hunting meat and gathering plants in the forests. Two thousand
years later, a new group of people came to the island. They knew how to
farm and fish and how to build simple houses. Then in about 1,100 c.E.,
Another of people arrived (the Taino). They built villages, had a group
government, and could make boats and clothing. Columbus saw these
people on October 27, 1492 during his famous first trip to the New World.
Main idea :
Evolution in living life with time. (___)
The first sentence is also the main idea sentence
2.Would you like to learn how to surf? First, swim out from the beach with
your board. Then wait for a strong ocean wave. When a good wave comes to
you, stand up on the board. As the wave rises under the board, try not to fall
down. While you ride the wave, use your feet to control the direction of the board. Try
to keep it heading for the beach. If you're lucky, you can ride the wave all the way to the
beach. If you can't stay on the board the first time, keep trying. Surfing is not easy, but it's
fun and exciting.
Main idea :

The main idea sentence is something like: Here are the steps for learning
how to surf.

Common Signal Words for the Sequence Pattern
For the main idea:
*A date or time phrase and words such as history or life
*Words that tell about a process such as how, make, do, learn, the way to,
process
For the supporting facts and ideas:
*A date, a time, the age of a person
*Phrases with time:
for a year, in a month, the same day, at this time, today, last week, many
years, later,
by the 1950s.
*Phrases that tell about the order of events or steps:
first, second, before, soon, while, now, at last, finally, when, at first, then,
now, next,
last, after, during

The sequence pattern

  • 2. The Sequence Pattern In this pattern, the main idea tells you about a sequence (things that happen in order). The paragraph tells you about the events or the steps of the sequence of event . *It can be a sequence of events. Examples: events in the life of a person, dates in history. *It can also be a sequence of steps in a process. Examples: instructions for how to do something, directions for going somewhere.
  • 3. PRACTICE A. These paragraphs have a sequence pattern. Read each paragraph and write the main idea. Then underline the supporting facts and ideas. 1. The history of the island of Cuba began a very long time ago. The first people came to the island from South America in about 3,500 B.C.E. They lived by hunting meat and gathering plants in the forests. Two thousand years later, a new group of people came to the island. They knew how to farm and fish and how to build simple houses. Then in about 1,100 c.E., Another of people arrived (the Taino). They built villages, had a group government, and could make boats and clothing. Columbus saw these people on October 27, 1492 during his famous first trip to the New World. Main idea : Evolution in living life with time. (___) The first sentence is also the main idea sentence
  • 4. 2.Would you like to learn how to surf? First, swim out from the beach with your board. Then wait for a strong ocean wave. When a good wave comes to you, stand up on the board. As the wave rises under the board, try not to fall down. While you ride the wave, use your feet to control the direction of the board. Try to keep it heading for the beach. If you're lucky, you can ride the wave all the way to the beach. If you can't stay on the board the first time, keep trying. Surfing is not easy, but it's fun and exciting.
