2. ISLM from IASL 2
• International Association of School
Librarianship
– The mission of the International
Association of School Librarianship
(IASL) is to provide an international
forum for those people interested in
promoting effective school library
media programs as viable instruments
in the educational process.

3. IASL roots 3
• World Confederation of Organizations of
the Teaching Profession (WCOTP)
– In 1962 when WCOTP met in Stockholm,
Margot Nilson, coordinator of school
library services in Stockholm, and Carolyn
Whitnack, AASL/NEA delegate from the
United States, approached the WCOTP
President about the possibility of holding a
forum as part of WCOTP which would
bring together people from many countries
who were interested in school library
service.

5. Why international involvement? 5
• Impressions of one IASL member:
– It soon became evident the same
problems existed internationally
among librarians that were
experienced in the United States, but
even on a greater scale. School
libraries throughout the world, needed
help from a more structured sponsor
that focused on libraries specifically;
WCOTP’s goals were too general to
zero in on one problem.

6. What is ISLM all about? 6
• From one day to one month:
– After 10 years of celebrating International
School Library Day on the fourth Monday of
October each year, the change to International
School Library Month (ISLM) was approved
by the IASL Board in January 2008 to take
effect from October 2008. This change
coincides with the tenth anniversary of IASL
celebrating school libraries. International
School Library Month allows those in charge
of school libraries around the world to choose
a day in October that best fits their specific
situation in order to celebrate the importance
of school libraries.

7. Projects of ISLM 7
• Skype Project
Coordinator: Gerri Judkins
– Would your students like to talk to others in a
far away country during International School
Library Month? The trick is finding someone
in a time zone where you can link up via Skype
during a school day.
– Join in the fun! If you would like to be part of
the Skype Project, email me and I will share
possible schools for you to connect with. If you
have any questions, please email.
• ISLM Skype project
8. Annual ISLM project 8
• Bookmark Project
– The ISLM Bookmark Project involves matched
schools making homemade bookmarks (any
style, shape, etc - be creative) that reflects the
International School Library Month theme.
– Once again Breege O'Brien of Ireland will co-ordinate
the 2014 Bookmark Exchange Project.
Register early so that you have plenty of time for
your students to create some wonderful
bookmarks.
– The Bookmark Exchange Project is a simple, fun
way of sharing the pleasure and delights of
books and libraries and of making new friends
through school libraries worldwide.
9. What people did for ISLM 2013 9
• Mont Fleuri Secondary School, Mahe,
Seychelles
– For this year’s International School Library
Month we have chosen the 2nd week of October.
It will commence on Monday 14th October and
end on Friday 18th October. On Monday there
will be a special assembly where staff and
students will present poems, famous quotes,
songs, jokes and talks on the importance of
reading. One student will talk about her passion
for reading and books. There will also be prize
giving for students who have participated in our
short story writing competition.

12. A European organization 12
• In the Spring of 2003, 12 delegates from 8
countries in Europe came together in
Amsterdam to discuss the role of school
libraries in Life-Long-Learning and the
significance of (Information) Literacy as a key
competence. The result of the discussions was
the inception of ENSIL and the publication of
the Amsterdam Statement.
