ENVIRONMENTAL
MANAGEMENT AND
SUSTAINABILITY
In general, Environmental management and
sustainability deals with managing the bodies of water,
land and atmosphere based on the Sustainability
issues and principles. In this relation, land use change is
important to the management of biosphere because
of the changes made in the environment by the
urbanization, agriculture, forest, woodland, grassland
and pasture. All these factors have great effects on
the global bodies of water, carbon and nitrogen
biogeochemical cycles of the earth‟s atmosphere.

SUSTAINABILITY ISSUES
Other factors that gradually destroys the earth‟s
atmosphere include:
air pollution in cities;
the pollutants including toxic chemicals like nitrogen
dioxide, sculpture oxides, volatile organic
compounds and particulate matter that
produce photochemical smog and acid rain; and
and the chlorofluorocarbons that degrade the ozone layer.
Due to these serious man-made pollutants, global
dimming may even disturb the global water cycle through
decreasing the evaporation and rainfall in some areas in the earth.
It also creates a cooling effect and this may have partially masked
the effect of greenhouse gases on global warming.

dioxide in the earth‟s atmosphere.
illegal fishing,
coral bleaching,
ocean acidification and
widespread of sea pollution caused by human wastes
The only human remedies that can be done include
the proper waste disposal management, statutory control and
regulation of illegal forestation, overfishing through a sustainable
fishing practices; as well as the use of environmentally sensitive
and sustainable aquaculture and fish farming, reduction of fossil
fuel emissions from industrial areas and restoration of coastal and
other marine habitat.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO BUILD SUSTAINABLE
COMMUNITIES?
Sustainable communities sprouted in support to the general
concept of sustainable development that basically advocates
living and doing business without destroying and endangering the
potential interest of other people and the environment.
Today, sustainable development is one of the issues addressed
by international environmental law (Schwab and Brower 1997). The
growing consciousness of people and the public on the
importance of balance in human activity and natural resources as
well as the increasing cases of violations of environmental
protection policies and regulations make sustainable development
a global subject and concern. In effect, the term „sustainable
communities‟ was coined to describe a group of people or an
organization that has sustainable development agenda.

The challenge of keeping balance between the
concept of development and the environment‟s welfare is
among the main reasons on why people need sustainable
communities. People need sustainable communities in order to
promote progressive way of life under environment-friendly
circumstances.
Banerjee (2002) “believes that when
environmental initiatives within a business context
were positioned within the framework of
productivity improvement, cost savings, and
purposes of eliminating defects, the business will
prosper”

There are specific problems the national governments need to
address in order to stick into its sustainable communities' policy:
Public participation and partnership
economic ambiguity
According to Davies (2002), greater public participation and
partnership is sought in promoting sustainable communities and
implementing policies. Generating participation and partnership
among the members of the public is difficult.
Davies (2002) argues that “partnerships
for sustainable communities are not
located in a governance vacuum: they are
situated in wider issues of local
democracy and public participation”

On the other hand, there is an economic issue of
ambiguity particularly among business organizations.
Analyzing sustainable development has always been the
weakness of the science of economics (Keong 2005).
Taking the general case of businesses, the difficulty of
authorities in tackling sustainable communities‟ policies is
inherent to the issue of financial limitations.

WHAT MAKES A COMMUNITY
SUSTAINABLE?
There is a strong commitment to development without risking
individual and environmental interests.
A community is sustainable when there is support from all
stakeholders (i.e. government, people, and other institutions). The
national leadership is always on the lookout particularly on issues that
needs immediate attention.
Strict implementation of laws and regulations is practiced.
All members of the population are aware of their roles as
nature‟s stewards.
Education is important because it is where consciousness
originates and develops.
On the case of economy, a sustainable community is able to
produce sufficient amount of resources to sustain its
continuous activities towards eventual growth.
