3. TIP 1: PREPARATION
3
Before you even have your first
interview, you really should know
yourself when it comes to the
qualifications of the job and if you
would be a match for the company.
In order to learn this, you need to:
1. Research the company.
2. Identify, catalog, list, and then
review your strengths, values, and
expertise.
3. Practice, Practice, Practice, so that
you will sound confident and natural.
Only then, will you be ready to put
yourself in the shoes of the employer
and emphasize what will really make
you stand out for this job and the
company.
4. TIP 2: DON’T TELL YOUR LIFE STORY, SIMPLY TELL
THEM ABOUT THE FIVE KEYS BELOW
In order to be able to effectively answer the
question that most employers will ask
during an interview, “tell me about yourself”,
you should break your answer down into 5
easy categories.
They include:
1. Educational achievements
2. Recent professional achievements
3. Professional goals
4. Applicable skills
5. Reason for your interest in the company

lifetime.html
5. TIP 3: HIGHLIGHT KEY POINTS ABOUT YOUR-SELF
THAT RELATE TO THE JOB
If this will be your first job, then you should discuss your educational
background and any group or volunteer work that you have done, as
well as any job experience that would show off your good qualities
and skills.
If this isn't your first job, then highlight any previous job experiences
and positive results that you have achieved in different projects.
Exact figures and numbers on how much money that you have saved
or made for a company will be music to a future employer's ears.
Ensure that you mention if you had exceeded a prior employer's
expectations or performance goals. You can ensure that you will be
asked how you plan to do this for their company.

communicator.html
6. TIP 4: TREAT THIS QUESTION AS A VALUABLE
OPPORTUNITY AND ANSWER WITH CONFIDENCE
Take a deep breath, smile, and
then explain to your interviewer
when you developed an interest
in the field you picked,
where and how you achieved your
first step up this particular
ladder, and what type of special
areas of interest brought you into
this corner of the industry and
this company.

learner.html
7. TIP 5: TELL YOUR CAREER STORY
Your interviewer won't directly
say, but they are asking about
your professional life only and
not your personal life.
If you have to, you can mention
about how you met your first
industry contact at a friend's
wedding or how your parents
inspired you.
Otherwise, keep all the
personal talk to a very low
minimum.

manager.html
8. TIP 6: DON’T WING IT
If you try to give a response to a
very awkward interview
question on the spot, you may
forget some important
information that would sum up
your background and
experience.
You should really think about
this question before responding,
and try to shorten your
response in a straight to the
point summary.

9. TIP 7: STICK TO THE PROFESSIONAL ASPECTS OF
YOUR LIFE
Even if you can bench press two hundred pounds in the gym or
can rattle off every popular movie line from the early ’90s, your
job interview isn’t the time or place to revel these skills to the
hiring manager. A better move: keep it professional. Focus on
those things that will make you a good employee and
demonstrates how you would be a great fit for the company,
says Kim Costa, job coach at Snagajob. She says to use the SET
method when answering, which includes providing information
about your skills, experience and time you’ve been using those
skills. “It shows you are well-rounded and gives the employer a
sense of what you bring to the table,” says Costa.

10. TIP 8: WEAVE “WE” INTO YOUR ANSWER
Now more than ever companies are
looking for job candidates who can
play well with others. Hiring an
employee who can’t get along with
co-workers can be a costly mistake.
One way to demonstrate just what a
team player you really are is to
weave the word “We” into your
answer to the “tell me about
yourself” question, says Terra.
Instead of saying I was responsible
for boosting sales x percent say our
team lead the charge to increase
revenue for the company, for
example.

11. TIP 9: REFRAIN FROM BOSS OR JOB BASHING
Talking about your previous job or past
experience is unavoidable but what you
don’t want to do is bash your former
employer, says LaMere. By doing that
you’ll raise red flags about your attitude,
loyalty and worse, whether or not you
will do the same thing again when you
move on to your next opportunity. “If you
had a negative experience, keep the
subject out of the conversation unless you
can turn that negative experience into a
conversation about lessons learned,” says
LaMere. “Instead talk about what excites
you about the career path that you are in
or your previous work experience leading
up to your present career.”

12. TIP 10: MAKE EYE CONTACT THROUGHOUT YOUR ANSWER
Making eye contact has a lot of
benefits. It shows confidence,
honesty and your level of interest.
When it comes to the “tell me
about yourself” interview
question, it can also cue you in if
you are droning on and on, boring
the interviewer. “It’s never a good
sign if the hiring manger looks
down or doesn’t make eye contact,”
says Costa of Snagajob. “If they
are looking around the room then
wrap it up and go on to the next
question.”
