Protect Your Skin By Using Sunscreen On A Daily Basis
It is a common misconception that the only time you need to apply sunscreen is when you plan to
spend a day basking in the sun at the beach. The reality is that you should always wear sunscreen,
and the information below will explain why that is, and it will outline the proper way to apply
sunscreen.
Whether the sky is cloudy or clear and whether the outdoor temperature is freezing or sweltering, you
should always wear sunscreen when you go outdoors. The reason is that even on days that are
cloudy and/or cold, the sun's rays can still affect your skin and cause damage. Ultraviolet rays are
invisible, so you cannot see them, but you will know that you were exposed to them when you wind
up with a painful sunburn. Make it a habit to apply sunscreen whenever you go outside.
Choose a sunscreen that is compatible with your skin. Many people can use any sunscreen, but if
you have sensitive skin, you may have to experiment with various sunscreens to find one that does
not cause a rash. Many sunscreens are now available for sensitive skin, so you should be able to find
one that works for you.
Sunscreen is not something that you can just apply and forget about. If you are in the sun, you should
reapply the sunscreen every two hours. Also, each time you emerge from the pool or ocean, you
should reapply sunscreen. Even waterproof sunscreen should be reapplied frequently for maximum
protection. Be sure to use at least one ounce of sunscreen for each application and cover all exposed
areas of your skin with the sunscreen. Sunscreen can protect your skin from the sun, but you must be
vigilant about applying it often and thoroughly, or you can still wind up with a burn and other skin
damage.
Check the expiration date on your sunscreen prior to use. The ingredients in sunscreen may degrade
with time and become less effective at providing protection, so it is a good idea to purchase fresh
sunscreen each year. If your sunscreen is expired, toss it and splurge on a new bottle.
Pay attention to the SPF number on the sunscreen you use. This indicates the amount of protection
that the sunscreen offers you. You should use a sunscreen with at least an SPF of 15. If your skin is
very fair and you burn easily, you should use sunscreen with a higher SPF. You can get sunscreen
with an SPF as high as 70, and for anyone who burns after a few minutes in the sun, this can be a
lifesaver.
The sun's ultraviolet rays can cause changes in your skin that lead to skin damage, wrinkles and skin
cancer. In order to protect your skin from these rays, use sunscreen whenever you go outside,
regardless of the weather conditions. Be sure to use the right kind of sunscreen for your skin and
reapply it thoroughly and frequently for best results.
