3. Anatomical Planes
• The human body is divided into 4 imaginary planes:
• Coronal Plane (Frontal Plane) - A vertical plane running
from side to side; divides the body or any of its parts into
anterior and posterior portions.
• Sagittal Plane (Lateral Plane) - A vertical plane running
from front to back; divides the body or any of its parts into
right and left sides.
• Axial Plane (Transverse Plane) - A horizontal plane; divides
the body or any of its parts into upper and lower parts.
• Median plane - Sagittal plane through the midline of the
body; divides the body or any of its parts into right and left
halves.

• Anatomy
The science dealing with the structure of
animals and plants.
• Physiology
The branch of biology dealing with activities of
living organisms and their parts, including all
physical and chemical process.
5. Life Characteristics
In a few words our life characteristics is basically
the cycle of life. We are composed of
cells, which form organisms that use energy to
function and in time grow and reproduce.
6. Directional Terms
• Anatomical directional terms can be used to
describe the locations of structures in relation
to other structures or locations in the body.
• Ex: Ventral, Dorsal, Anterior, Posterior etc.
7. Homeostasis
What is homeostasis?
The tendency of a system, especially the
physiological system of higher animals, to maintain
internal stability, owing to the coordinated
response of its parts to any situation or stimulus
that would tend to disturb its normal condition or
function.
Who discovered homeostasis?
In 1865 French Physiologist named Claude Bernard
came to the conclusion that in order to survive, a
constant, stable environment was required.
8. Human Organization
• The body can be considered conceptually at
seven structural levels: chemical
(atom, molecule, macromolecule), organelle, c
ell, tissue, organ, organ system, and complete
organism.
