2. To Be Technologically Literate Means: According to David Richard Moore technology literacy has three levels which include: Being able to identify technologies relevant to a task. Understanding how to use the technology and how to navigate its interface. Understanding the inner-working or structure of the technology.
3. In Addition to Moore… I would like to add that being technologically literate has another level: Being open to learning new technologies as old ones fade, which is especially important to people like myself who are future educators.
4. How to Become Technologically Literate: According to David Richard Moore you develop this literacy when you: Assist learners by helping them identify technologies relevant to a task. Assist learners in understanding how to use the technology and how to navigate its interface. Assist learners in understanding the inner-working or structure of the technology.
5. Level One: Identifying Technology Be able to identify which sources of technologies are appropriate for certain tasks. Understand how and why a certain source of technology is the best option for your task, and identify other possible technologies as well.
6. Have I Developed Level One Literacy? By completing this Power Point presentation, I have shown that I can identify an applicable technology appropriate to use for this assignment. I have identified that twitter is a means of immediate communication, both socially and academically. I did this by tweeting both in and outside of the classroom whether it was a tweet about my day, a random thought, or notes from our class.
7. Level One Cont’d Through the use of Google Documents, I identified a useful way to work on projects with fellow classmates in and outside of the classroom. Blogging on Tumblr was a useful was to communicate writing longer than just the 140 characters that twitter allows.
8. Level Two: Understanding How to Use Technology Be able to understand the inner workings of a technology for a certain task Do not need to know how a technology works, but have more of an understanding of how to interact with it.
9. Have I Developed Level Two Literacy? Google Docs seemed to be pretty easy for me to navigate. I was able to create and share one of the two documents used for our group white paper. I was able to leave notes and communicate with other members of my group through our documents.
10. (Cont’d) Twitter- I was able to fully understand how to tweet to everyone, to just a group by using a hashtag, or just to an individual. I was able to understand how to follow a person. I had difficulty figuring out how to delete a person from following me. I understand how to tweet short messages less than 140 characters
11. (Cont’d) Google Buzz I understand how to navigate to view buzzes or blogs others have left. Had difficulty completely understanding how to create my own buzzes and blogs through this technology.
12. (Cont’d) Tumblr I understand the interaction with this site enough to have added my own personal blog with a picture attached.
13. Level Three: Understanding the Structure of a Technology You must be able to understand how the technology works. Be able to modify technology when problems arise Analyze the structure, and be familiar with it’s functions
14. Have I Developed Level Three Literacy? I do not believe that I am familiar enough with any of technological structure to consider myself to be at this level of literacy. I understand for the most part which technology should be used for certain tasks, and understand how to maneuver them, but am not comfortable enough with the structures of them if a problem were to arise.
15. Personal Reflections on Twitter Outside of the classroom, Twitter seems like the same thing as a Facebook status update. I don’t really care too much for this part of it. However, I did find it useful while in class to tweet about what was discussed, and then go back and see if I missed anything. I also liked the immediacy of tweeting. While I was open to it during this module and enjoyed learning it, moving forward, I don’t see any room for it in my life, personally.
16. Personal Reflections on Google Documents I feel as though Google Docs has been the most useful piece of new technology I have learned in this module. Its affordances allows for great communication while working on a project with other classmates. I really delved deep into this technology and enjoyed being able to edit a paper with other people at the same time, without having to be face to face. I can definitely see myself using this in the future.
17. Personal Reflections on Tumblr So, I tried blogging, and enjoyed reading others blogs. I haven’t quite figured out why else Tumblr would be of any other use in my life. Unless, of course, a professor was using it to post assignment descriptions, I feel as though I would have no other need or want for its use.
18. Overall Reflections With all that has been stated previously, I would definitely consider myself more technologically literate than I was before this module, having not known really how to use any of the new technologies I’ve mentioned. I would not consider myself a master of these technologies and would need to get to know them even better before being able to assist anyone else with becoming literate. I feel as though I have been open to trying these new technologies which is important moving forward when I become an educator.
