The European Multiple MOOC Aggregator called EMMA for short, is a 30 month pilot action supported by the European Union. It aims to showcase excellence in innovative teaching methodologies and learning approaches through the large-scale piloting of MOOCs on different subjects. EMMA will provide a system for the delivery of free, open, online courses in multiple languages from different European universities to help preserve Europe’s rich cultural, educational and linguistic heritage and to promote real cross-cultural and multi-lingual learning. The recent explosion of online educational resources has the potential to reorganize how we learn – from K-12 and university to the workplace and the informal learning we do every day. It also raises new questions and opportunities for research that crosses the many disciplines relevant to designing computer programs that help people learn. For example, HCI and cognitive science can provide complementary perspectives in investigating how to design the content and instructional features of an online course, such that a person processes and stores that information in a way that successfully guides their future behavior. Online educational environments provide new optimism in tackling challenges like these because they can be instrumented to collect an unprecedented scale and diversity of data, and allow iterative sequences of experiments to be embedded in authentic educational contexts with real students. This talk presents one approach to this kind of research, using experimental comparisons to test the effects of modifying online mathematics exercises to include motivational messages and question prompts for people to explain, the design of which is guided by the psychological literature on motivation and learning. A combination of laboratory experiments and experiments embedded in real-world online education platforms (like www.KhanAcademy.org) reveal that prompting people to explain “why?” facts are true drives them beyond memorization to uncover underlying principles and patterns, and that teaching such self-questioning strategies may accelerate student learning. Motivational messages appear to have limited benefits if they are simply encouraging or aimed at raising confidence, but do increase how much effort students invest if the messages emphasize that aptitude is malleable and can be improved through persistence. Several planned experiments are presented which also use this paradigm of adding minimal but effective textual changes to online exercises to achieve practical impact and explore basic cognitive science questions about learning.

Recent research on how families and intergenerational groups learn in the museum setting provides a strong rationale for planning and facilitating programs in specific ways that meet these visitor groups’ diverse needs. While this research provides compelling ideas, there are real barriers for museums to plan, implement, and evaluate these research-based strategies with their front-line staff. In addition, the emerging research has not yet been able to provide concrete evidence about which implementation strategies are most effective supporting the learning of families. This session will summarize lessons from recent literature, offer a series of case studies, and facilitate the exchange of ideas between attendees about how staff training strategies or program development approaches can be employed, adapted, or tested to better support the learning of intergenerational groups in a variety of museum settings. This session was offered at the October 2014 WMA and presenters* included: Mary Kay Cunningham, Visitor Experience & Interpretation Specialist, Dialogue Consulting Rowanne Henry, Evaluator, Museum Stories Consulting & Blogger Jason Porter, Associate Director of Education, Skirball Cultural Center Sarah Watkins, Director of Collections and Learning, USS Constitution Museum *presenter contact information included in the last slide of the presentation

Design meaningful block play with intentionality to foster STEM learning in early childhood settings. This talk, presented at the Opening Minds Conference in Jan 2016, reviews research about the importance of talk for brain development, developmental block play and how these two ideas are critically important as precursors for the development of STEM & science thinking for young children. The talk describes activities at the Chicago Architecture Foundation designed for young children and families grounded in research about talk, block play and early childhood science literacy.

Enterprise Knowledge’s Urmi Majumder, Principal Data Architecture Consultant, and Fernando Aguilar Islas, Senior Data Science Consultant, presented "Driving Behavioral Change for Information Management through Data-Driven Green Strategy" on March 27, 2024 at Enterprise Data World (EDW) in Orlando, Florida. In this presentation, Urmi and Fernando discussed a case study describing how the information management division in a large supply chain organization drove user behavior change through awareness of the carbon footprint of their duplicated and near-duplicated content, identified via advanced data analytics. Check out their presentation to gain valuable perspectives on utilizing data-driven strategies to influence positive behavioral shifts and support sustainability initiatives within your organization. In this session, participants gained answers to the following questions: - What is a Green Information Management (IM) Strategy, and why should you have one? - How can Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) support your Green IM Strategy through content deduplication? - How can an organization use insights into their data to influence employee behavior for IM? - How can you reap additional benefits from content reduction that go beyond Green IM?
