Dirt goddess
1. Jilly Dos Santos
Soil
Oh, Soil, sister of sand and clay, constant companion of the crop,
I pray to you, oh goddess, that your life-giving energy will never stop.
You, who gives life to even the basest beings,
With skin as dark and rich as the night that evelopes our evenings.
You grasp the seed and root in your loving hand
And produce the green of this land
In cold months, you lie below the dead grass,
Sleeping, until the first cry of spring, wakes you at long last.
I pray, mother of flora, that you shall not be harmed by sun,
Causing cracks in your beautiful skin, and famine to one
And all of your loyal, dependent children of the earth,
Who rely on the crops, of whom you give birth.
I pray that neither rain, nor river, shall drown you,
But rather quench your thirst, and that of which you grew.
Please, goddess, hear my prayers like mother hears child
Reassure me, oh goddess, that the land will be cultivated, and no longer remain wild.
