Flight attendants or cabin crew (also
known as stewards/stewardesses,
air hosts/hostesses, cabin attendants)
are members of an aircrew employed
by airlines primarily to ensure the
safety and comfort of passengers
aboard commercial flights, on select
business jet aircraft.

❖ The German Heinrich Kubis was the world's
first flight attendant, in 1912. Kubis first
attended the passengers on board the DELAG
Zeppelin LZ 10 Schwaben.
❖ Imperial Airways of the United Kingdom had
"cabin boys" or "stewards"; in the 1920s.
❖ The first female flight attendant was a 25-
year-old registered nurse named Ellen
Church. Hired by United Airlines in 1930,
she also first envisioned nurses on
aircraft.

performance.
8. QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING REQUIRED
A degree is not usually required to work as
airline cabin crew. However, a degree in
travel, tourism, hospitality management,
leisure or languages may be helpful. A
nursing degree could also be relevant.

Personal qualities, appearance and good
health and fitness are normally more
important than academic qualifications.
Most airlines require cabin staff to
complete a training course covering
such things as safety procedures,
legal/immigration issues and customer
service upon entry to the organisation.

11. Who can apply?
Age limit: 18 to 25
Candidates who have passed 10+2 examination or any bachelor degree are eligible to apply.
For a female air hostess - A minimum height of 157.5 centimeters with weight proportionate to the
height would be a must.
Further, one must be unmarried with normal eyesight of 6/6 uncorrected vision in each eye.
Fluency in English, Hindi, and knowledge of an international language is an added advantage.
A flight purser, male counterpart of the air hostess, has to be a graduate (below 26 years of age), and
have a minimum height of 163 cm with proportionate weight.
12. salary
It depends on the airlines you are working
for; in India Air Hostesses with lesser
experience or freshers would get Rs 16,000/-
to Rs 25,000/- per month and experienced
candidates may expect to earn Rs 75,000/-
approx per month or more. On the other hand,
foreign airlines would offer salary ranging
from Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 3 lakh per month.
