Events  in  the  Cotswolds
The  Cotswolds  is  an  area  of  west-‐central  England.    Sometimes  called  the  "Heart  of
England,"  the  area  is  now  home  to  the  wealthy  and  the  retired.    This  area  has  a  rich
history,  and  holds  cultural  and  popular  events  all  year  long.

In  May,  Robert  Dover's  Cotswolds  "Olympick"  games  are  held  in  Chipping  Campden.    The
Girst  event  was  held  in  1612,  but  it  was  rediscovered  in  1957,  and  has  been  held  every
year  since.    Events  include  obstacle  races,  tug  of  war,  backsword  Gighting,  and  shin-‐
kicking.    The  same  month,  the  town  of  Woodstock  holds  the  Blenheim  Palace  Jousting
Tournament,  featuring  knights  jousting  on  horseback  and  exciting  falconry  displays.

The  Gatcombe  Horse  Trials  are  held  at  the  home  of  Her  Royal  Highness  The  Princess
Royal.    Her  home  is  at  Gatcombe  Park,  near  Tetbury.    This  is  a  3  day  equestrian  event  that
brings  out  the  Ginest  horses  and  riders  in  the  horse  world.    These  horses  jump  a  carefully
laid  out  course  one  day,  and  perform  more  technical  tasks  the  other  two  days.    The
nearby  town  of  Bath  holds  its  own  Badminton  horse  trials  3  day  equestrian  event  as
well,  which  includes  riding  cross  country,  dressage,  and  show  jumping.

The  most  famous  equestrian  event  held  in  the  Cotswolds,  though,  is  the  Gold  Cup.  The
Cheltenham  Gold  Cup  is  a  steeplechase  horse  race,  where  horses  race  3  miles  over  a
grass  course  with  22  jumps.    The  race  is  scheduled  to  take  place  each  year  during  the
Cheltenham  Festival  in  March.

Christmas  time  in  the  Costwolds  is  magical,  and  the  locals  get  started  early  in  November,
with  the  Bath  Christmas  market.      The  market  has  vendor  stalls,  with  carolers  strolling
back  and  forth,  and  featuring  mulled  wine.    Closer  to  Christmas,  couples  can  take  a
romantic  stroll  through  the  Enchanted  Wood,  at  Westonbirt  Arboretum,  near  Tetbury.

A  Cotswold  annual  event,  immortalized  for  the  ages  by  more  than  one  YouTube  video,  is
cheese  rolling  at  Cooper's  Hill  in  Gloucester.    Legend  states  that  this  was  the  way  farmers
would  claim  the  hill  for  sheep  grazing.    One  day  every  spring,  the  residents  of  Gloucester
take  cheese  wheels  to  the  top  of  Cooper's  Hill,  and  roll  them  down.

The  Costwolds  celebrate  music  and  literature  throughout  the  year  as  well.    The  Jane
Austen  festival  is  held  in  Bath  in  September.    She  is  claimed  to  be  Bath's  most  famous
resident.    A  month  later,  Cheltenham  holds  a  Festival  of  Literature,  with  10  days  of
readings  and  live  performances.    Many  of  the  towns  in  the  Cotswolds  have  music
festivals  during  the  year.    They  celebrate  every  style  of  music,  from  fringe,  to  blues,  to
classical,  and  everything  in  between.

These  are  just  a  few  of  the  many  things  happening  in  the  Cotswolds  all  year  long.    In  fact,
many  travelers  return  year  after  year,  because  it  is  impossible  to  experience  everything
going  on  in  this  area  with  only  one  visit.
