Cheating used to be considered an unmentionable sin. However, in this day and age, it has become
more common and somewhat of a daily occurrence. Cheating is more widespread today than in the
past. According to the article titled Education: The New Morality, cheating has not been an issue of
values, but simply one of practicality. This shows that many view cheating as a mere occurrence and
something that can often be skipped over. The reason cheating has become such a pervasive
movement is because many students tend to rationalize their cheating behavior. A common

They can leave their valuables and belongings out and not worry as much about theft and dishonesty.
By reinforcing academic integrity, many students tend to weave personal integrity into their daily
actions. The other attempt was the way of punishment. Many professors have offered all sorts of
punishments ranging from receiving a zero on an assignment/test to possible expulsion. The benefit
of this type of settlement is the possibility for reform. The last attempt I mentioned was a possible
integration of computers into the everyday classroom. By including this, students are graded based
on their work in front of a computer (monitored, of course) leaving less room for cheating to occur.
There are many great ideas and ways to curb cheating, however, many times, they work best together.
Both ideas, issuing an honor code and possible punishments, are both successful ways to limit the
amount of cheating. However, they also work best side by side. For example, by issuing an honor
code involves student participation. It turns from "administration vs. students" to "students helping
each other". With this sort of involvement, there is a greater likelihood that cheating can be curbed.
On the other hand, those who were adamant about cheating in the first place may stick to their
dishonest ways. In this case, after the honor code has been issued, consequences for offenses should
be issued so that offenders are aware of the possible punishments that may

Each day new innovations shape our world for the better. The American school systems are still stuck
in the past, staying behind in this revolutionizing world. Ways of learning are outdated. Cheating is
considered acceptable. Schools are permanently shutting their doors. America's school systems are
not meeting the needs of today's students. School is very taxing on students and their families. A
study from The American Journal of Family Therapy showed students have nearly three times too
much homework (Wallace 1). Supported by the National Education Association, the standard amount
of homework is ten minutes per grade; 1st grade has ten minutes of homework, 5th grade has fifty
minutes. Kindergartners are not supposed to be getting 30 minutes of homework, the amount of
homework meant for a third grader. Too much homework is unreasonable and unfair. Students are
already in school for seven hours, there is no need for extra hours of work at home. Stress affects
not only the student, but the parents as well (Pressman 1). Parents feel unable to help their children
with an increase in homework. As demands and difficulty increase, parents feel overwhelming stress
because of their inability to assist their children. Another study showed 56% of students stated
homework was their main stressor; Homework was directly connected to conditions such as ulcers,
migraines, weight loss, and sleep deprivation (Enayati 1). Over half of 4,300 students who

There is an ever broadening problem spreading throughout colleges all across America: cheating.
Is it a serious offence or just a harmless crime? Cheating is on the rise, but schools and colleges are
not far behind with ways of dealing with it. Mark Clayton deals with this issue in his essay entitled
"A Whole Lot of Cheatin' Going On."
Clayton's essay is heavily quoted along with an obvious absence of his ideas. The reader is
supposed to believe that his quotes accurately represent his views on the matter at hand. Clayton's
essay is primarily pathos due to the amount of quoted ideas.
The essay starts off quoting a freshman at University of Texas: "'Cheating is an answer. It might not

Students of this generation are reluctant to turn their classmates in.'" (20–21) Clayton states that
critics believe that college cheaters get their bad habits from high school; it is what they have gotten
away with before and they think they can get away with it again. Even though his essay lacks
personal opinion, Clayton does make some interesting points.
According to Who's Who among American High School Students, "80 percent [of high school
students] said they had cheated during their academic careers." (21) Such logos is a common sight
in Clayton's essay. Another fact that helps prove his point that cheating is only getting worse would
be when he states that, "66 percent of the parents of these top students [Who's Who] said cheating
was 'not a big deal.'" Clayton tries to start his essay with a nice variety of pathos, ethos, and logos,
but he ends up overwhelming his readers with other people's quotes.
In the next section of Clayton's article he describes how colleges are starting to fight back. He says
colleges are starting to condemn dishonesty; some are even making students' cases very public so
as to advertise their willingness to deal with cheating. Some schools are trying to prevent cheating
before it has a chance to happen by performing skits at freshman orientation as well as giving out

A utilitarian would probably agree with cheating. Utilitarianism believes that morals are based on
the happiness or misery of people. If a person cheated and got an A on the test, they would obviously
be happy. Utilitarians also have the tendency to look at the short–term affects of a situation. For
example, cheating would result in an A, however the broad perspective is that nothing would be
learned, or if they were to get caught cheating they would fail, therefore in actuality they are not
benefiting at all.
Deontology on the other hand would argue that you should not cheat. Deontology assumes that we
all have clear sets of duties that we ought to obey, these are given to us from God or our own
reason. Therefore cheating is obviously wrong, so you ought not to cheat. Deontology believes that
you have a set of duties that you follow. In deontological ethics, an action is considered morally
good because of some characteristic of the action itself, not because the result of the action is good.
Of the three approaches to ethics that are mentioned above I think that the egoists support of
cheating makes the best argument. Although, I personally do not believe in cheating I do think that

In writing this paper, I am setting out to answer a question that has been plaguing women for many
years. Why do men cheat on us? Is it something us women do that causes it? Is it something they are

What I learned from this is that men will cheat as long as they can justify that they are not doing
something wrong because it is not their fault.
For the next part of my research, I consulted some magazines that I had around my house. I found
an article in the January 2004 issue of Cosmopolitan that was helpful in explaining one of the
theories on why men cheat. According to Shirley Glass, PhD, many men who cheat come from
chauvinistic cultures or families where their fathers cheated. Another point brought up by Glass in
this article is that men feel that as long as they do not love the other woman, that it is simply a
physical thing, then they are not really cheating (Koli). I guess what Glass is saying is that cheating,
like abuse or alcoholism, can be a cycle that runs in families. If a man grows up watching his father
cheat on his mother, then he is being taught that it is an acceptable practice. Also, men feel that if
they do not break their emotional promise to their significant other, then they are not doing anything
wrong. While I think the first one is understandable and a valid point, I feel the second is yet another
excuse men use to justify an unjustifiable action.

Cheating is one of the strategies that most insufficiently prepared candidates use during their
examinations, although many people, educational institutions and governments make tremendous
effort to avoid academic dishonesty during national examinations. Similarly, all the educational and
governmental actors agree with the importance of integrity for all those who are involved in
organizing examinations. Accordingly, it is in order to keep this reliability that the choice of
proctors requests great care in every country and every educational institution all over the world.
Moreover, proctors are so important that no exam can normally be held in their absence. Since they
represent the government, or the educational institution, as well as the administrative officials who
appointed them, people expect proctors to be free of any criminal record, honest, fair, quite,
courteous, detail–oriented, obedient in following instructions, etc.
Paradoxally, despite the prominent role that invigilators play and the need for them to be reputable,
conscious and honest workers, and a set of relation between actors engaged in the exam monitoring
throw the discredit on some of these apparently honest workers.
Thus, the central question is what can make proctors change from the status of candidates'
invigilators to that of candidates' protectors against the exam supervisors? How can this change be
possible? What are the factors of such a drastic change? What are proctors' reactions against this
doubt? Those few questions constitute the basis of our interest in the present research.
1.1LITERATURE REVIEW
Although the literature on cheating during examinations is abundant, that of proctors' involvement in
cheating is rather scarce if not inexistent. The reason is probably because nobody expects proctors to
be involved in the academic dishonesty that justifies their presence in an examination center.

I had a Supervisor at work who would not ever give me credit when it was due to me. There had
been times when I had made suggestions or performed my duties in an astounding way only to be
cut down or cut off by her. Sometime later I found out she was presenting my suggestions as her
own and taking credit for work I had done. When I presented this situation to her Supervisor she

There are many causes to why a student do things. Some students do things for the benefit of their
selves and some students do things for the benefit of others. A lot of things students do have no
meaning but cheating is not one of them. Cheating is not a good thing but also I do not feel as if
