 UDL or Universal Design for Learning is a
method for designing curriculum to meet the
learning styles of individual students.

REPRESENTATION
 Teachers may have students who are
primarily auditory learners, visual
learners, and/or tactile learners.
 UDL gives the teacher resources to
modify and or accommodate their
lesson planning for the needs of their
individual students.
 Recognition Network --”The “What of
Learning”: How we gather facts and
categorize
 Strategic Networks--”The How of Learning”:
Planning and Performing Tasks
 Affective Networks—”The Why of Learning”:
How learners get engaged and stay
motivated
 Customizing the display of information based
on learners individual needs
 Providing alternatives for auditory
information including multimedia resources
 Providing alternatives for visual information
including
 Providing students with varied ways to
respond in the classroom based on their
individual learning styles
 Providing students with varied ways to
interact with content materials based on
their individual learning styles
 Integrating assistive technology in the
classroom environment
 Increase individual choices available for
students in order to complete assignments
 Enhance relevance, value, and authenticity
of classroom assignments for students by
providing Real Life classroom activities
 Provide a safe classroom environment by
reducing threats and distractions that inhibit
learning
 Assistive Technology is technology used by
individuals with disabilities in order to
perform functions that might be difficult
and/or impossible for them to do on their
own
 Walkers and/or Wheelchairs for students who
have mobility challenges
 Electronic devices that provide text to
speech for students with visual disabilities
 Keyboards for students who have physical
challenges writing their assignments
 Electronic devices that provide students who
are non-verbal with their own voice to
communicate with others
 Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) extends
full civil rights to individuals with disabilities
 Assistive technology help implement the
intent of the Americans with Disabilities Act
(ADA) of providing full civil rights to
individuals with disabilities by providing
them with a reasonable accomodation
 Some of our students with disabilities may
require Assistive Technology in order to
access the curriculum.
 IEP and 504 plans may incorporate Assistive
Technology plans that must be implemented
 Assistive Technology may consist of
something as simple as large print books to
complex technological devices including
optical character recognition devices
 Our school district uses Microsoft Products
and there are free Assistive Technology Tools
that are available for usage within our
Windows 8 platform
 Narrator is a screen reader that reads aloud
text on computer screen for students that
are visually impaired
 Magnifier is a tool that enlarges the
computer screen and/or part of screen to
make text and images easier to see
 Ease of Access center provides the user a
centralized location where settings for audio
and visual can be controlled
 Speech Recognition Devices allows users to
use their voice to access the computer
 Keyboard Shortcuts make it easier for
students with disabilities to use computers
 Visual notifications provide users with
important notifications instead of being
provided by audio alone
 Assisted Technology Resource provides
information on the Americans with
Disabilities Act and Assistive Technology
 Advocacy Resource provides information on
Universal Design for Learning and its relation
to Common Core standards
