report to
communityb2014
Dear Friend,
2014 was a year of tremendous strides
for UWBC as we continued to connect
individuals and families to the building
blocks necessary for a good quality of
life – education, income
and health. Our entire
community prospers
when children succeed
in school, when families
are financially stable
and independent, and
when people live healthy
lifestyles.
We made it a priority in 2014 to increase
our presence in the community and to
increase awareness of what we do. This
led to more collaborations with companies
and organizations, a true value to this
county. Aswell,wewereexcitedtoseenew
faces join our volunteer base and greatly
increase our giving power. We want to
thank our passionate volunteers who gave
so generously of their time and talents to
positively impact our neighbors. Numbers
don’t lie; volunteer hours through UWBC
more than doubled from 2013! Without
all of these dedicated individuals, those
who return year after year and those just
starting, UWBC would not be as strong and
effective.
The 2014 Report to the
Community is proof
that great things are
happening in Brazoria
County. We are proud to
share the workwe are able
to accomplish because
of the contributions from
our supportive community and the people
who commit their time, resources and
skills. With results like these, we only see
a brighter future.
We invite you to give, advocate and
volunteer with us.
That’s what it means to LIVE UNITED.

COMMUNITY IMPACT COMMITTEE
Phone calls are answered by trained
specialists who are good listeners,
blending understanding and expertise to
provide information and referrals drawn
from a comprehensive database of social
services. We partner with 2-1-1 Texas/
United Way HELPLINE, which uses the most
comprehensive database of social services
resources in the State for referrals. In 2014,
there were 34,095 referrals to Brazoria
County residents in need.
Education is the cornerstone of individual
and community success. We all have a
stake in making sure children of all ages
grow up to be productive citizens who give
back to the community. Together we can
help children and youth achieve their full
potential.
how?
- Improving access to quality, affordable
child care and early learning
opportunities
- Creating opportunities for children to
excel in school
- Providing after-school and mentoring
programs for at-risk youth
When people cannot meet their own
basic needs, the impact is felt throughout
the community. The lack of financial
stability is linked to negative long-term
consequences such as lower education
levels, poor health and unstable housing.
Together we can help individuals and
families become financially stable and
independent.
how?
- Supporting basic needs while increasing
financial education
- Helping hardworking people obtain job
training and family-sustaining wages
- Increasing access to affordable housing
for individuals and families
Whether it is a neighbor without health
insurance, a victim of abuse, or someone
struggling with mental illness or addiction,
health impacts every aspect of a person’s
life. A healthy lifestyle helps children
succeed at school and adults at work.
Together we can improve people’s health.
how?
- Increasing access to critical healthcare
services
- Reducing substance abuse, child abuse
and domestic violence
- Increasing health education and
preventive care
INITIATIVES & PROGRAMS
Reader Tutor Mentor is a collaborative
effort aimed at filling education-specific
partner and community needs. UWBC is
partnering with Brazoria County Library
System, Boys & Girls Club of Brazoria
County and Communities In Schools. By
helping children at an early age, the hopes
are to lower the dropout rate.
This is a national initiative conceptualized
by United Way Worldwide with a goal of
recruiting 1,000,000 volunteers. This
initiative was rolled out at the local
level during the 2013 fall workplace
campaign season. At the close of 2014,
we had 53 volunteers who signed up
through our VolunteerMatch site at uwbc.
volunteermatch.org, with 1908 volunteer
hours combined.
To volunteer as a reader, a tutor or a mentor,
please visit uwbc.volunteermatch.org to
sign up. You can also find more information
on our website at www.uwbc.org/reader-

UWBC believes in addressing issues with
sustainable solutions aimed at the root of a
problem. Financial Stability Classes educate
individuals and provide them with the tools
needed to make financially responsible
decisions with their income. These classes
utilize real world examples to teach the basics
of banking, savings and consumer rights. In
2014, we offered five sessions throughout

VITA/EITC is a solution for low-income
households during tax season. The program
provides help by offering free tax filing
and assistance by trained volunteers for
those who earn less than $53,000 per year.
Volunteers help eligible citizens claim EITC
and Child Tax Credits, saving them money
they otherwise would not have known about.
In 2014, volunteers submitted 28 tax returns.
The refunds totaled $63,155 and saved those
households $22,602 on EITC and $20,071 on
Child Tax Credits.

Donated box fans and AC units are given
to individuals and families who lack this
essential during the hot summer months. Both
fans and AC units are distributed on a case-by-
case basis with priority going to homes with
infants, elderly and those with respiratory
illnesses. In 2014, 273 fans and 10 AC units
were donated and distributed throughout the
community.

Way and FamilyWize partnership. This free,
easy-to-use card can save up to 75% with an
average of 40% and can be used at most chain
pharmacies and independent pharmacies. It’s
easy. You can keep using your card every time
you need to fill a prescription. All you have to

Workplace campaigns create camaraderie and a sense of community when employees
come together for a common cause and invest in the place where they live and work.
Innovative workplace campaigns often put the “fun” in fundraising by including chili
cook-offs, raffles, pie-in-the-eye contests, dunking booths and penny jar wars.
THANK YOU for Advancing the Common Good throughout our community by
conducting workplace campaigns.

  • 1. United Way of Brazoria County uwbc.org report to communityb2014
  • 2. Dear Friend, 2014 was a year of tremendous strides for UWBC as we continued to connect individuals and families to the building blocks necessary for a good quality of life – education, income and health. Our entire community prospers when children succeed in school, when families are financially stable and independent, and when people live healthy lifestyles. We made it a priority in 2014 to increase our presence in the community and to increase awareness of what we do. This led to more collaborations with companies and organizations, a true value to this county. Aswell, wewereexcitedtoseenew faces join our volunteer base and greatly increase our giving power. We want to thank our passionate volunteers who gave so generously of their time and talents to positively impact our neighbors. Numbers don’t lie; volunteer hours through UWBC more than doubled from 2013! Without all of these dedicated individuals, those who return year after year and those just starting, UWBC would not be as strong and effective. The 2014 Report to the Community is proof that great things are happening in Brazoria County. We are proud to share the workwe are able to accomplish because of the contributions from our supportive community and the people who commit their time, resources and skills. Innovative workplace campaigns often put the “fun” in fundraising by including chili cook-offs, raffles, pie-in-the-eye contests, dunking booths and penny jar wars.
