2. 1. Background:
Government of Nepal is committed to improve the health status of both rural
and urban people by delivering high quality health services throughout the
country. In the past, thrust of concentration was towards health care delivery
of the rural population and it shadowed the initiative of urban health services.
Urban health centers were established through the joint initiative of District
Public Health Office and Municipality. Urban health centers were developed
to promote and prevent the health issues of the people who lives in urban areas
yet can't afford to pay for health interventions.
1.1 Objectives:
To learn about the Urban Health Care Centre of Si.Na.Pa.9
To learn about the staffing pattern of Urban Health Care Centre.
To learn about the role of Urban health Care Centre in improving
maternal and child nutrition.
2. Activities:
After arriving to the Sano Dumduma ward-9, activities such as observation of
the Urban Health Centre, Communication with the staff members, documents
reviews, IEC materials review were conducted. A brief interview of the
Auxiliary Nurse-Midwife Mrs. Uma Kafle was taken to know about the Urban
Health Care Centre.
3. Findings:
According to the ANM Mrs. Uma Kafle, there are 2 urban health care centres
in Siddharthanagar municipality. One is situated in Sano Dumduma ward 9
and the other in Sankarpur ward 10 providing free health services to slum
areas. Both were established in 2069/70 B.S.
Staffing pattern of the Urban Health Care Centre included:
3. a. Health Assistant (1) c. Auxiliary nurse-midwife (1)
b. Auxiliary Health Worker (1) d. Office Assistant (1)
During her interview she mentioned that out of all the 13 wards of the
Siddhartha municipality, ward no. 9 and ward no.8 were seen to be having
more disadvantage groups. The nutrition status of the mother and children of
these two wards were poor. Reports reviewed also revealed that very few
people completed all the 4 ANC visit in UHC.
For promotion of maternal and child nutrition the UHC staffs provides
counselling regarding importance of eggs, milk, meat, green leafy vegetables
in mother's diet. The UHC staffs also aware mothers about importance of
exclusive breast feeding and also teach proper breast feeding techniques .
Furthermore, they also distribute iron and Calcium tablets to the mothers
during ANC and PNC visit. Distribution of Albandazole and vitamin A bi-
annually is done by UHC staffs. UHC supports complementary feeding by
distributing baal-vita.
UHC also supports Suaahara II project and help the Community Nutrition
volunteer address new pregnant women from their ANC, counsel the mother
and her family about the nutrition enrich locally available food and its benefit.
4. Conclusion:
I found that UHC work effectively for uplifting the health of people living in
the slum areas. Along with the joint effort with Suaahara II project has been
progressing to raise awareness on nutrition, sanitation and health in past years.
