The Crowsnest Fire in 2003 burned over 20,000 hectares of forest in the Crowsnest region, the largest fire since 1930. It forced the evacuation of two towns and many residents, including Elaine Hruby who found it difficult to decide what to take. While some local businesses involved in timber were hurt, others like Spray Lake Sawmills saw increased business from the fire. Burned areas can also create ecological diversity and allow rich undergrowth to develop.
