2. Rochtanek enumerate
Three Characteristics
A digital Library is a collection of texts,
images, or data that has been digitized.
3. a digital library should have a system
to index and navigate or retrieve
information.
a digital library should have at least
one specified community users.
4. Examples
Web could be considered the world’s
largest digital library.
Project Gutenberg
2nd early digital library was begun in
1971 at the University of
Pennysylvania.
5.
6. Google Books
a current, and much more controversial
digital library.
7. Considerations that must be dealt with when
a librarian is constructing a digital library
An enormous number of digitized texts are
available.
• Which ones will you use?
• Will you provide links to where they
currently reside on web?
8. Perhaps most important of all is there is a
huge number of books out there,
• Are they what you and your patrons will
want, need and use?
9. Tools have been developed that allow
retrieval this information.
• Do they allow you and your patron to
retrieve this information?
10.
11. Copyright issues are associated with the
almost all digital content, whether digitized
or obtained from subscription databases.
• Will your students and teachers keep in
mind that fair use does not excluder
educational institutions from copyright law.
12. Standards are in place for interoperability.
• Will this be a big issue for school
librarian or is a technology coordinator
available and knowledgeable so that you and
he or she can discuss the unification of
standards on the digital you create?
13. The design of the DL should be a user-
centered. While there are a lot of nifty
design things you can do.
• Do they support the user or make it more
difficult for the user?
14. Creating and maintaining a DL requires a
tremendous administrative commitment.
• Do you have the skills an time to do it?
15. Funds must be available for a DL project.
• Will you have sufficient funding to do
this?
If funding for DL project is not available
it will never succeed.
