### Wastedfoodinvestigation 090313073744 Phpapp02

1. 1. Wasted Food By Anne, Nicky and Sarah
2. 2. Introduction

We investigated the weight of food wasted per day in Hot Lunch because we wanted to show people how much precious food, which people in poor countries need so badly, is wasted by the middle school students. To do this we weighed the buckets of wasted food every day for one week.

3. 3. Results Weight of wasted food In grams Days
4. 4. Graphs Days Weight of food wasted with bucket Weight of food wasted without bucket Monday 7,200g 4,587g Tuesday 3,850g 2,932g Wednesday 7,060g 6,142g Thursday 5,650g 4,732g Friday 7,060g 6,142g
5. 5. Averages

The mean weight of wasted food is 5,246g per day.

The median is 6,142.

The mode cannot be calculated as all pieces of data are different.

The range is 3,350.

6. 6. Working out the mean, median and range

To work out the mean, we added the weights of food wasted each day together and divided them by five: 6,282g + 2,932g + 6,142g + 4,732g + 6,142g = 26,230g : 5 = 5,246g

To work out the median, we ordered the weights lowest to highest and took the one in the middle: 2,932g, 4,732g, 6,142g, 6,142g, 6,282g. Middle = 6,142g.

To work out the range, we subtracted the lowest weight from the highest: 6,282g - 2932g = 3,350g

7. 7. Working out the weight of wasted food

To work out the weight of wasted food, we measured the buckets in the lunchroom without food (306g). Then we measured the buckets with food every day after Hot Lunch, added their weights together and subtracted the weight of the buckets (918 as there are three buckets). Ex. 1,600g + 1,560g + 3,900g = 7,060g - 918g = 6,142g

8. 8. How can we use this data?

We are using this data to show people how much food we are wasting.

To make this even more clear to people we found out how many plates of food could be made of the food we waste.

We came out with this: The average food only the middle school hot lunch students waste every week could fill 50 plates. That could give 50 children in poor countries a meal.

9. 9. What we learned

We learned how to collect data independently.

We learned how to calculate the mean median, mode and range with real life things.

We learned that often you do not see all the challenges you have to face in a project beforehand.
