Wood and Joining Wood
Learning Objectives By the end of this lesson, you should: Be able to clearly define the three classifications of wood Be able to describe how to join wood together Be able to describe how the term ’sustainable’ and how it relates to wood
Classifications of Wood Wood comes in three different classifications: Hardwood Softwood Manufactured Board
Softwood – Natural Wood Natural material Comes from evergreen trees Tends to give longer lengths than hardwoods Tends to be cheaper than hardwoods
Examples Scots Pine Red Ceader Larch
Hardwoods – Natural Wood Natural material Comes from deciduous trees Tends to be more expensive than hardwoods Tends to be harder wearing than softwoods
Examples Oak Mahogany Teak
Manufactured Boards – Man made wood Comes in large boards Manufactured by gluing wood or wood fibres together Produces constant strength and texture Easy to work with ‘Veneers’ can be used to add a more aesthetic finish
Example Blockboard Hardboard MDF Plywood
Task 1 Complete question 1 on your worksheet in your class book in as much detail as possible 5 Minutes
Sustainability Timber is often referred to as a sustainable material. But why????????
Sustainability This is when the environment is thought about when designing a product. Transportation costs Material usage Sourcing of material
Timber and the Environment Trees can be replanted to replace those cut down for their timber Wood can easily be recycled/reused Manufactured boards can be used to limit the number of trees which are cut down
Timber and the Environment Forest Stewardship Council Promote responsible management of the worlds forests
Task 2 Complete question 2 on your worksheet in your class book in as much detail as possible 10 Minutes
Joining Wood Traditional wood joints Knock-down fittings
Traditional Wood Joints Give the product extra structural strength Time consuming Tend to be on more expensive product
