You have been invited to a neighbor, co-
worker or friends Muslim wedding. What
should you wear, what you should you take,
and what should you expect?
1. Voluntary and mutual agreement between
man and woman
2. Engagement
3. Nikah including Mahr (Dowry) + Khutbah
(Sermon)
4. Walimah or Valimah (Reception)
 Most but not all Muslim weddings are multi-
day affairs. Although you may be invited to
the Nikah (the religious ceremony), there is a
greater likelihood that you will be attending
the reception where the “rules” are more
relaxed. Follow the cue of your hosts and it
will become fairly clear eg if there is gender
separation.
 As there are many nations and cultures who
are Muslim. There is no one prescribed way
that marriages are celebrated and done.
 Eg Pakistani, Arab, Afghan, Turkish, Indian and
within each more categories
 Eg Punjabi, Sindhi
 Egyptian, Moroccon
 Pashtun, Dari
 And on top of that American-Muslim
 And 1st, 2nd, 3rd generation
 You have a potpourri of faith and culture.
1. Reading Fatiha (Proposal)
2. Engagement
3. Dholki (All ladies pre-marriage party & music)
4. Mehndi or Hannah party (usually all ladies)
5. Nikah or Katb el-Kitab/ (Marriage ceremony in mosque
or marriage hall or home)
1. Mahr (Dowry)
2. Khutbah (Sermon)
6. Shadi party (from Bride)
7. Walimah (Reception from Groom)
8. Rukhsiti (Farewell tribute of bride)
9. Registration (with City or County registrars office)
 For women modesty is the key word. You can
dress elegantly but avoid showing “skin,” eg
cleavage or wearing short skirts. Full sleeves
and a long skirt or pants work. For men a suit
or dinner jacket and pants are safe
 The invitation is your best guide. Most
weddings will have some text like, “No boxed
gifts.” In this case cash is king. Depending on
how close you are to the family, if the invite
is for you and your significant other, then
e.g. a$100 bill may be good slipped in a card
and handed at the reception. If it is the
whole family invited double it. In some
cultures the amount should be an odd
number eg $101 etc.
 The Venue depending on which part of the
wedding celebration it is may be at a home,
mosque, restaurant, or hotel.
 Food may be served or buffet style. Expect
lots and for the hosts to keep coming back
and saying ‘please have some more’
 Muslim wedding usually (but not always)
especially for the reception are larger. Your
hosts will accommodate guests of different
backgrounds, so don’t feel overwhelmed.
