Program Details
A post-secondary foundational program in policing provides you with the knowledge of

community policing principles and professional police standards.
The two-year diploma course helps you learn:
• How to document, prepare and assist in the presentation of court cases
• How to initiate, promote and facilitate partnerships to meet security needs
of community
• To comply with criminal and provincial law, the Charter of Rights and
Freedom and rules of evidence
• How to evaluate the situations and make sound decisions

• To develop appropriate strategies to assist victims of crime

The police foundations diploma program runs through four semesters and covers all aspects
of the policing, military and related professions. It is an intensive course in which you will
study about Canadian Criminal Justice System, Police Practice, Principles of Ethical and
Moral Reasoning, Principles of Psychology, Criminology for Policing, Current Criminal
Justice, Criminal Code and Police Powers, Interviewing and Investigations, Youth in the
Conflict with the Law, Provincial Offences, Crime Scene Management, Conflict Management,
Use of Force, Investigation and Evidentiary Procedures, Community and Experiential
Policing and Ontario Highway Traffic Act.
Choosing the Right Police Foundations Course
There are a number of colleges across Canada, offering foundational programs in policing.
But not all offer you practical hands-on experience, which is a mandatory requirement to
enter the Canadian workforce.

Physical Requirements
You will also need to meet minimum standards of physical fitness, vision and hearing.
Additional Requirements
After admission but prior to attending the program, you will need to:
• Undergo a criminal reference check
• Pass a security clearance
• Obtain a valid “G” driver’s licence
• A First Aid and/or CPR certification
• Assume the cost for your uniform
