Become an Integral Part of the Justice System as a
Paralegal
There are ways in which you know that a certain profession is suited for you that go beyond
just having interest in an area. For example, if you are: highly organized with an ability to
plan and prioritize; comfortable with researching tasks; analytical with strong numeracy
skills; thrive under pressure and have an ability to meet deadlines; boast strong
interpersonal skills; are an innovative problem solver and decision maker; have the ability
to work successfully in a team environment; and adapt easily to technology and current
industry computer software, you may make a great Paralegal.
Centennial College has a Paralegal program that takes just three semesters to complete
and is geared towards mature students who previously completed a university degree or
two-year college diploma in any discipline, or who have a partial university degree (and
who have a minimum of two years work experience relevant to the program).
Students who are accepted into the undertaking study from Progress Campus. As
Centennial College’s largest location, not only is this campus centrally located but it also
hosts a wide range of School of Business programs. This gives students the opportunity to
network with peers from programs similar to theirs and mingle with a range of
instructors and professors who may offer advice and personal anecdotes that will
enhance learning.
The curriculum of this offering is designed to teach students all of the know-how
they need to be an integral part of the legal system and remain active throughout
the legal process — from the first client meeting until case resolution. Among the
specific courses in this offering are: Legal Computer Applications, Legal
Research/Writing, Administrative Law, Advocacy, Evidence and The Litigation
Process, Employment Law, Legal Accounting and many others.
Each Paralegal course contains a practical aspect, including the learning of technology
systems, such as PCLaw, Quicklaw and other legal research tools that support paralegal
objectives. The hands-on learning not only prepares students for the field but also for an
extensive 210-hour field-training component. This aspect of the undertaking gives students
real world experience in a legal environment. During this time, students apply what they
have learned and also develop their professional network.
Once they successfully complete this Paralegal program Toronto-based offering, graduates
not only have options in terms of workplaces but also in terms of areas of practice. Among
the types of places that employ Paralegals are: law firms, community legal service,
government departments, insurance firms, collection agencies and corporations. They may
also be self-employed. Meanwhile, the areas of practice include Highway Traffic Act
offences, small claims court, tribunals and provincial/minor criminal offences. Additionally,
because the Law Society of Upper Canada (LSUC) accredits Centennial’s Paralegal program,
grads are eligible to write the mandatory LSUC licensing examination. The license is
required to practice as a paralegal in Ontario.
