  24. 24. Voice is often understood as the ability of citizens to express their preferences and to be heard by the state, either through formal or informal channels, in written or oral form (Rocha Menocal & Sharma, 2008). Citizens’ voices are not homogenous, and sometimes more powerful voices and opinions can crowd out those of excluded or marginal groups (DFID, 2011).
  25. 25. Empowerment is a process through which individuals or organized groups increase their power and autonomy to achieve certain outcomes they need and desire (Eyben, 2011). Empowerment focuses on supporting disadvantaged people to gain power and exert greater influence over those who control access to key resources (DFID, 2011).
  26. 26. Accountability is a process for holding individual actors or organizations to account for their actions. Accountability requires transparency, answerability, and enforceability between decision makers and citizens (Rocha Menocal & Sharma, 2008).
  27. 27. I tried being normal once… Worse 2 minutes of my life! “Love yourself first and everything falls into line. You really have to love yourself to get anything done in this world.” ~ Lucille Ball "What sunshine is to flowers, smiles are to humanity. These are but trifles, to be sure; but scattered along life's pathway, the good they do is inconceivable." ~Joseph Addison "Just stop for a minute and you'll realize you're happy just being. I think it's the pursuit that screws up happiness. If we drop the pursuit, it's right here.“ ~James Hillman
  28. 28. QUESTIONS? Jan L. Myers 607-244-6880 "Progress, far from consisting in change, depends on retentiveness. When change is absolute there remains no being to improve and no direction is set for possible improvement: and when experience is not retained, as among savages, infancy is perpetual. Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.“ ~George Santayana
