Communism in africa and latin america
1.
2. Africa
Europe had dominated
Africa in the 1800s and
first half of the 1900s.
Countries in Africa
began demanding
freedom after World War
II.
3. Play it again Sam……
Once again, the Soviet
Union considered this an
opportunity to spread
communism and began
to give money to
revolutionaries.
America responded by
giving money to
countries to keep them
non-communist.
4. Soviet Union Aid to Africa
The Soviet Union gave military and economic aid
specifically to Angola, Mozambique, Egypt, Ethiopia,
etc.
They also gave money for education to educate
specifically about the benefits of communism.
5. American Response
As can (hopefully) be
expected, America
responded by giving
money to:
Prevent communism’s
spread and continue
containment
And to prevent the
domino theory from
happening.
6. In Latin America
Cuba was the first country in the Americas to become
communist.
It is 90 miles south of America and really scared our
government.
Fidel Castro became a close ally of the Soviet Union and a
war was narrowly averted during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
7. Castro as the boogeyman
Castro became the ultimate
nightmare to Americans
afraid of communism’s
spread.
With support from the
USSR, Castro began trying to
spread communism
throughout Latin America.
In El Salvador, for example,
American backed troops
fought Soviet backed troops.
8. Finally, Nicaragua
Rebels known as
Sandinistas overthrew
the government of
Nicaragua.
They received help from
the Soviets and Cubans.
America in turn backed
the Contras fight to
restore freedom to
Nicaragua.
