2. Time management
Time management is normally something I struggle with a tiny bit. This was shown again in this project. This however was not entirely my
fault. This is due to the college having 2 taster days during the week. This disturbed my 2 day week and probably made me rush my
production. This would mean that this fanzine does not look as good as it could of. I couldn’t of done this at home either due to myself using
adobe photoshop to make the fanzine. When it comes to the FMP I should be fine. This is due to having I think 8 weeks on production not just
4. This will be double the time so hopefully I should be able to be able something that looks professional, follows all the conventions and also
ultimately looks good. In the planning i seemed to do quite well. This was due to the time management and because this time i seemed to
have more ideas than i do normally. This was probably because i am very interested in football. For my planning i did quite a lot. I did 3
practical experiments. These were making my front cover and also a page which would be in my fanzine. From this i used the design of which
i did in my experiment. This is because i thought it looked good to be honest. Also in my planning i looked at fonts and experimented with
fonts. This was because they would be a huge part of my fanzine. I looked at possible fonts for my fanzine masthead and also for headings on
my second page. This was important for me as i wanted these to be bold, stand out and too look good. This was because i wanted them to
look professional and wanted my fanzine look like something you would actually buy. Also for my planning i did a page by page analysis for all
12 pages. This however slightly changed in my production. This is because initially i planned on doing 14 pages however i only did 12. This
was because i did not have enough time to complete 2 more. The final things i did in my planning were a contingency plan. This was so i could
evaluate all the problems that could go wrong. . Overall though my planning went well and i stook to the time limits in place. The research was
successful when doing this project. This is because I could find different fanzines and also find ones similar to the one I was about to create. I
could look at different issues. This gave me an idea of the conventions as well as the main image on the front of them. In my research I looked
at these different fanzines and analysed them. This was so that I could gather more information about them. I then looked at the topic and
genre of fanzine I was going to create and started to gather more context around that subject. This enhanced my knowledge making my
research more advanced. In my research I stuck to the time limits and did all my alalysing quickly and efficiently. This then set me up to plan in
good time.. Overall the research was good and throughout my project the time management was good. This was because I managed to do
everything within the time limit. There was just one slight hiccup and that was because of the days off. If I didn’t have them I am sure I would of
had a better looking fanzine.
3. Research
In my opinion the research for this project went well. This was because it gave me contex I Needed in order to make this fanzine. To get this context
and to gather the information provided to make the fanzine I analysed 3 fanzines. One that looked newer and more professional than the rest. A
standard one and then one that didn’t look too good at all. From these I could gather the conventions used on the fanzine covers I looked at the cover
in detail, looking at the colours fonts and the masthead. This was so I could see what was typical of a fanzine cover. Firstly in my research I did some
context reader here. This was just gathering information about Manchester United. I already knew the majority of what I looked at but this gave me
more information on the club. This really helped because it gave me more information of which I used on some of my pages, this also gave me me
different ideas for the pages I was going to include. The most important part of my research in my opinion was the analysis of the exiting fanzine
covers. This was because it gave me the knowledge of what is typical of a fanzine.
4. Planning
For my planning I firstly did some experiments. These were successful in my opinion. For my
experiments I did 2 front covers and an experiment of an page Inside. These really helped when it
came to production due to myself using the design of the experiment in my production twice. I
practiced techniques in my experiments such as adding multiple filters to my pictures, using
patterns for the background, adding drop shadows and strokes and finally including gradient filled
font. All these techniques were helpful even tho I didn’t use them all in my production. Also for my
planning I did a style sheet and also analysed the font I used in my experiments as I did multiple
versions of the same name. For my style sheet I looked at different fonts of which I could include for
my masthead, For this I chose a name which wasn’t set in stone and included it in many different
fonts. I then analysed these looking at the qualities. These were if they stood out, if they looked like
they were associated with the genre and also if they would fit the cover. Another thing I did in my
planning was a page analysis. I did this for all 14 pages I was aiming on doing. Unfortunately I only
managed to do 12. This was because of the time limit and because I was not able to complete this
at home. The page analysis though really helped me. This is something I haven’t done before and
would definitely do it again. This planned out my pages and gave me a clear guide when I was
doing production. The most successful part of my planning in my opinion was the page analysis.
This is because it really helped when it came to production as I already had my ideas laid out. I
could just look back and then complete the page within a shorter amount of time than normal.
6. I think that the first 3 pages look good. This is because i had the most time then and was not aware of the 2 days that i would miss
further down the line. This meant that i spent the most time on these 3 pages. These 3 in my opinion are the best. For my fanzine i
wanted to create a print based product based on the football team manchester united. This was shown in my planning. For this i really
wanted to incorporate the colour red throughout my product. This is because this is the main colour of manchester united. i think i did
do really well doing this as every page includes red. The main cover in my opinion does look quite good. This is because the masthead
is large and noticeable. The font used also looks football related and looks like you would see it on the back of a football shirt. This
relates to the genre of the fanzine. I then added a drop shadow behind the masthead. This made it stand out more and look more
noticeable. This would be really good if this was a legit product. This is because it would stand out on the shelves and from a distance. I
then incorporated some yellow into the cover. This is because this is the third colour of manchester united.this also made the cover look
less red and made it look more colourful and exciting. This again made it stand out. The main image I included was of David De Gea
and Andreas Pereira. These are 2 well known footballers at the club. For the images I first changed the brightness and exposure of
them. This was so that they would look like they was taken on the same day. I then wanted to make them my own so I added several
effects to them. I went to the filter gallery and used a cutout effect. This made it look cartoony and made it look well cutout. After that I
then lowers the opacity so I got some of that effect and the normal image. I then included a sketched effect this made it cross hatched
and looked like it was coloured by pencils. I then again lowers the opacity. I then added another sketch effect. This was different to the
previous one and looked brighter. I then lowers the opacity and finally I added poster edges filter. This was to make it stand out and
enhance the edges. I then repeated this process for the rest of the images on my fanzine. This created a little pattern and overall in my
opinion made the fanzine look better and organised.
● The contents page in my opinion is very basic and is a bit boring. For this I didn’t really know what to include. I also did not
have much time to complete this as I didn’t do this before the 2 day break. I feel it does do the job however could be better. The
heading contents page sticks out due to the drop shadow and the black on red. I also feel that the font does look very
noticeable. I then included the list of pages and what was on them. For this I used white font with black lines below. This was
because the white font stuck out better on the red background and the black also linked to the heading. The list looked tidy
however looked boring in my opinion. I then included the main image of who I included many effects. I included a few filters on
it as well these being cut out. Cross Hatching and also a sketched filter. This made the image look like it was my own and also
fitted the style I was going for. The image was of Paul Pogba. He is one of Manchester United’s more well known players. I
included a drop shadow behind him. This was to enhance him from the background. I finally included a black triangle in the
corner of the page. This was because it linked with the colour scheme. I also thought that this looked different and quirky.
Overall I think my contents page looked okay but a bit boring. If I had more time I would of made it look better this would have
been by using a different layout.
7. The 3rd page of my fanzine is probably my best page. This is because it took me the most time
and was the first one I made. I did this page due to myself seeing someone do something similar
and I changed it to my style. For this page I wanted to show the audience the present and past
number 10s. For this I included rashford, nistelrooy and sheringham. All these have played in
the number 10 role and have had a big impact at the club. For this page I added 3 images of the
played and included 3 filters to each. These were a cutout filter, cross hatching filter and also a
sketched filter. This made them look almost like a cartoon. This also makes the images look
exciting. I then included a large number 10. This was size 72 font so that it was large to see. I
then scaled it larger. I copied this 3 times and put them behind the image. At the r that I then
added a drop shadow behind them. This was to make the numbers look better and make them
stick out more. After that I then chose the same font to write the strikers names i. This was
because it looked organised and tidy. I then again added a drop shadow . This was to make the
font stand out. After that I added a white bar underneath all the names. This included the height,
position and age. I did this to show the audience a bit of information about the players. After
that I then wrote a bit about the players. This was about who they played for how many goals
they scored and also a bit about what they did for the club. This will give the audience some
information about the player. I then placed this over a dark red rectangle which made the
information stand out on the page. Overall I feel this page does look aesthetically pleasing and
does provide the audience which lots of information surrounding the players.
9. I think that these pages do look quite good. My favourite of these 3 pages is the player obe. I also think these pages are quite basic however they do
stand out and do look tidy. The fixtures page doesn’t look that good and is a bit boring however does do what it was suppose to. This was to show the
audience Manchester United’s next 3 fixtures. There is not that many ways you can show this but would say my design is.a bit boring whosever it
does look tidy. For the fixtures page I basically just added 3 rectangles and then removed the colour they was initially filled with. I then added a stroke
and copied this another 2 times. This was so that all the rectangles were the same. I did this in a black colour this was because it stood out on the red
patterned background. After that I then filled the rectangles with the badges I got of google. I added a drop shadow to all the badges. This was to
make them stand out more. After that I added the vs, stadium and date and time. This was to show the audience when this fixture is. I think I did this
in a tidy manner. After that I then thought it looked plain so I incorporated some paint splashes behind the badges, a heading and also a box which
said Manchester United’s next 3 fixtures, My favourite page which was the player one didn’t take as long as I expected. For this I chose and image of
google and cut it out. I then copied the layer 3 times and added filters to it. This made the image my own and also made the image look better in my
opinion. This gave it a cartoon look which suited the type of style I was going for through my fanzine.i then included his apperences, goals and assists
for this season. To show this I included large numbers which has a shadow behind them and the name of what the number represented under them.
This in my opinion looked really good and showed the information in a professional manner. I then put the players name in 2 boxes. This made his
name stand out and also made the page look better. For the background I included some lines. I did this becuase I thought it would make the page
look more exciting and make it stand out more. This was a good idea I think and does make the page look better. I then lastly included a black
gradient coming in from the bottom. This was because of 2 reasons. One being because black is one of Manchester United’s colours. The other
reason is because it linked to my colour scheme on the page. The last page which is the rival page looks good however I’m not sure if there are too
many players on the page. I think the page looks good and does look appealing. For this I included the two colours of the teams, blue and red. I then
included the stadiums on each side of the page but lowered the opacity down. This was so that they didn’t stand out too mich as I didn’t want the
attention to be fully on that. I then included the 3 players from city. I added 3 filters to each player. They were the cutout filter and also a crosshatch
filter and finally another sketched filter. I then did this for all 6 players. After that I added the heading Manchester derby and underlined it. This just
lets the audience know what this is off if they are not familiar. This page didn’t take much skill really but looks alright I think. Overall I feel these 3
pages do look good however could of looked better but this was due to the time limit on these.
11. I think that these pages look okay however they are in my opinion the worst ones out of of my fanzine. This is because I kind of rushed these. This
was due to the time which I have mentioned multiple times throughout my evaluation. For the stadium page I didn’t know really how to show old
Trafford which is Manchester United’s stadium. I followed my planning however I thought that it looked like a boring design so I wanted to change it.
In the end I did follow my planning and continued with this design. Although i do think that this page looks boring I think it does look tidy and does
present the audience with some information about Manchester United’s stadium I think that this page looks tidy due to the layout of the images and
also because of the background and finally the text and how it’s laid out. I personally like the drop shadow effects of which I included this makes the
images and heading stand out a lot more than they would without. This is a good thing as it will draw the audience's attention to the images and
text.I imported the images of google this was because I had no plans of travelling to Manchester. To make the images my own I firstly changed the
exposure, brightness and saturation. I then added 2 filters to each image. This was the cutout filter and also the crosshatching filter. I have used
these multiple times throughout my fanzine so I thought that this would link to the other pages and I also I wanted to have the same style throughout
my fanzine. This was because I thought it would make the fanzine look like it all belonged together. The double page spread which is the dream
team page was the last page I made. For this I was really rushed and in my opinion this is the worst page. For this I wanted to create a page which
included the best players that have ever played for Manchester United. For this I included 11 images of the players and cut them out. After that I
had to make sure they was the same length as one another. This was difficult due to the pictures being different for example some were standing
and some were just from the shoulders up (close up). In the future if I did this again I would definitely get all the same images. This is because it
would most likely make my page look better. After that I included the background. For this I changed the brightness. This was to match a similar
brightness to the players. After that I the. Added to black rectangles both located at the top and the bottom of the page. This was to present all the
players names. I did this because I had seen it on a similar page on google. After that I then added a heading stating that this is the dream team. I
did this in a white bold font however I wish that I did it in a whiter colour. Mine was more grey. After that I then included a badge of which I made on
another page. This badge was imported from google however I added a embossing and a drop shadow to it. Overall I think these pages could of
done with a bit more work. I would of improved them if I had sufficient time to do so. I do think that they do fit in with the rest of the pages and don’t
look completely unique compared to the other pages.
12.
13. I think that these 3 pages look good and round of my fanzine in a great way. I would say that these pages
are up there with the best I did for my fanzine. My personal favourite out of these 3 is the manager one.
This is because I feel that it gives the audience lots of relevant information about the managers and also
shows the audience who the managers are. I think this has been shown cleanly and looks tidy. I. Like the
paint splat behind the managers. This is because in my opinion it shows the managers better. Also i
thought that this worked during my players page which was similar to this. Well the same layout and
design. I also really like the alex ferguson page. In my opinion i feel like this is better than the rashford
page which is very similar to this. I like this one better though due to the standing out of the main image.
For the main image i added 3 filters on it just like the rashford image however i felt they made this
individual image look better. I then added a black and white filter. This was due to alex ferguson being old
and black and white having connotations such as old and vintage. The final page was the table page. In
this i didn't really know how to show the table and show the audience where manchester united qare. In
this sense i feel like i did a good job however i do not feel that it looks that good compared to what i could
of done if i had more time. I added the same effects as before such as a drop shadow and also added font
that looked like it linked to a football magazine.
14. Aesthetic qualities
I feel like my work overall does look good however it would of looked better. I blame this on the time
limit I only had 3 full days on production making my 12 page fanzine. The time was definitely an issue
for this project and I know that for my fmp my production will be a lot better. This will be because of
the 8 weeks I have on production. I think overall though my work did look good and I had an ongoing
style throughout my fanzine. This is good as it links my fanzine together and makes it look
professional in the sense that it looks like a real product. I also think I implemented the conventions of
Manchester United very well throughout my magazine. The colours I included were mainly red
however I featured some black White and yellow. All these colours link together in my opinion. I also
included the same background in some of the pages. This was the striped background. I think that
this suited the style of my fanzine and made my pages look more exciting. My work in my opinion
also looked a lot better at the start than the end. I think this is reflected through this.
15. Peer feedback (1)
Jacks fanzine does look good however it looks better in places. This is shown by his cover and first few
pages looking very professional and very clean. I can see that jack has rushed some of his pages by
looking at them. Jacks work also doesn’t include that much text. This means that someone who wants to
learn about football doesn’t then that much information.
I like the fact that jacks fanzine does stick out and you can clearly tell what team it’s about. This is
because of the colour scheme throughout and also the graphics. I also really liked the fact that jack has
included a range of players not just a selected few who are more well known. This gives him variety in his
fanzine.
16. Peer feedback (2)
I think that this fanzine looks good. It clearly stands o it to me and I can clearly tell that this is a Manchester
United fanzine. As a Liverpool fan this is not my cup of tea however I think it looks good and you can easily
tell. The colours are bright and sharp and easy on the eyes. This makes the fanzine look like it’s a real one.
I think that in hindsight jack should of wrote more articles in his fanzine. This is because it only shows limited
information and could be showing more to the audience that don’t know about Manchester United. I also think
that jack could of done some pages different. One being the dream team one. This doesn’t look as good as
his other pages.
17. Peer feedback (3)
Jack product could have been done better in my opinion. I did a magazine as well for this project and I did
mine different. I would of included some of the main conventions such as a barcode and page numbers. I
would of also included a lot more text because me as a football fan doesn’t understand the majority of the
fanzine.
One thing I did like tho is the colour scheme and also the patterned backgrounds. I really loved the striped
background. This is because it makes the pages look more exciting and also enhances some features.
The other thing I liked was the images and the effects you have done to them. This makes them look
different and looks like you have done more work. This also makes them look better and suits the style of
your fanzine. I think this is a good looking fanzine.
