  • 1. What is Arduino? It’s an open-source electronics prototyping platform based on flexible, easy-to-use hardware and software.

    2. Think of the Arduino as a really small desktop computer that you can take with you anywhere you go. But unlike the desktop that you have or had at home, it wasn’t designed to run windows, excel or other software programs.

    3. Instead, its purpose is to allow for computers to interact with the physical or “analog” world, and the physical world to interact with computers. Some of the things it’s been used for are flame throwing Jack’O Lanterns.

    4. Art installations.

    5. And the rapid prototyping of electronics goods, like this jacket that tells the direction in which a biker is turning.

    6. All this is called physical computing. In the most broad sense means using software and hardware to impact the real, or “analog” world.

    7. But it also helps us translate the analog as our interactions with the system can be put into ones and zeros. This is called input / output.

    8. While all this is cool, what makes the Arduino really stand out is that its entry point is only $30. It was introduced in 2005 as a teaching aid, its simplicity of use was embraced by hobbyists.

    9. The Arduino integrated development environment (IDE) It is designed to introduce programming to artists and other newcomers unfamiliar with software development.

Due to abundance of free documentation online, tutorials and videos, you can easily pick this up and start working on it without prior knowledge.

    10. Before the Arduino, making interactive electronics was expensive. And the Arduino is democratizing innovation.

    11. But now you can hypothetically research, design and prototype something like a Roomba from the comfort of your home.

    12. Is it impactful? You be the judge, many of the products that are hitting the market, being financed on Kickstarter, and written about on tech blogs as well as major publications are being prototyped in Arduino.
