John Keats (1795-1821) Synaesthetic Imageries in John Keats M.A.(Sem)2 Dept of English R.No.-10 By Kinjal
When HE ELECTS TO DEAL WITH ideas, he chooses such human things as love, sorrow, life, beauty, and, presents them in concrete shape by use of five senses.Matthew arnold -”no one can question the eminency, in keats’s poetry,of the qualtiy of sensuousness. Nothing ever becomes real till it is experienced. Five senses:- The sense of Sight The sense of Hearing The sense of Smell The Sense of taste The sense of Touch
The sense of sight:-Keats finds beauty everywhere and in every object. He sees beautiful objects and presents them in such a way that aword Picture emerges before our mind’s eye.Example:-There was an awful rainbow once in heaven:We know her woof, her texture;she is givenIn the dull catalogue of common things.(“Lamia”)Ode to a Nightingale Ode to Autumn The Eve of st. Agnes My imagination is a monastery and I am its monk. Much have I traveled in the realms of gold, and many goodly states and kingdoms seen.
The Sense of Touch:-Keats presents soft, delicate and delightful objects of nature, and art.The Grecian Urn:- piper, trees, trodden grass.A thing of beauty is a joy forever: its loveliness increases; it will never pass into nothingness. (Endymion) 'Beauty is truth, truth beauty,' - that is all ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.
The sense of Hearing:-Ode to a Nightingale –with its mighty magic and music.Example:-The voice I hear this passing night was heardIn ancient days by emperor and clown:Perhaps the self-same song that found a pathThrough the sad heart of Ruth,……Odes on a Grecian urnHeard melodies are sweet but those unheardAre sweeter; therefofe,ye soft pipes, play on;Not to the sensual car,but endeared, pipe to the spirit ditties of no tone.TheEve of st.Agnes:-Provides a feast of rich, musical food to his readers.
The Sense of Smell:-Keats’s olfactory sensation is great. He has a queer power to smell the sweetness of fragrance coming from various flowers and other objects.Ode to a Nightingale:-I cannot see what flowers are at my feet,Nor what soft incense hangs upon the boughs,But,in embalned darkness, guess each sweet;Wrere with the seasonable month endows…….The sense of taste:-Keats’s sense of taste was extraordinarily,From time to time he presents tasty tasty before usEndymion :- arich feast is prepared for the sheperd prince.Lamia:- banquet room is simbol of taste and flavour. The Eve of st. Anges:-rich fruits
Why is imagination important when reading and understanding poetry by Keats? Strong imagery is the basis of structure in many poems. Literal andmetaphorical imagery words aid the reader with interpreting the mainideal of the poem. Keats wrote, “I think him(keats) the gret poet he is only when the senses capture him , when he finds truth in beauty, that is to say, when he dose not trouble to find truth at all.” Special thanks to Guide Jay sir
