In 2012 The Walt Disney Company bought Lucasfilms at a valuation of $4.06 billion. Lucasfilms has now
become a subsidiary of the a subsidiary of the parent company, The Walt Disney Company and has now
become part of one of the most powerful media conglomerates I the word, along with companies such as
Marvel and Pixar.
Disney is know for dominating much of the child to young teen entertainment industry, where as Lucasfilms
known mainly for its famous Star Wars Franchise.
Disney bought Lucasfilms as a way of further dominating the industry, as well as allowing the company to
create a new, potentially highly lucrative Star Wars trilogy. The purchase took place in 2012, and was followed
by the announcement of a new Star Wars Film scheduled to be released in 2015.
The Walt Disney Company is the biggest media conglomerates on the globe, therefore the addition of
Lucasfilms increases its influence and keeps the company a key part of the media conglomerate.
The addition of Lucasfilms to the Disney conglomerate has an affect on other companies as it make the
company more powerful in the industry and creates less chance of new companies becoming bigger.
The current Oligopoly of the current film industry is flawed as it doesn’t allow many opportunities to grow
and become as successful as the superpowers. The Current 6 superpowers dominate 90% of the film industry
meaning that massive amounts of money isn’t being as circulated as it could be within not only the industry
but also the general economy.
I can see that the film industry is generally dominated by a group of companies who peace by peace buy up
smaller companies and preventing growth of smaller companies because of these conglomerates growth,
ensuring that they stay on top of the market.
