8. Example projects:
• The Translational Research Network for Prostate
Cancer (TransPot) program will adopt an innovative,
multidisciplinary approach, providing highly sought-
after, effective solutions for incurable prostate
cancer.
• This four year project has received over €2.5m in EU
funding.
• It began in January 2017 with Almac Diagnostics and
QUB as participants in a 10 organisation project
• APPFlow will develop Early Stage Researchers (ESRs)
in innovative research through a focussed training
plan centred on flow chemistry, essential for the
pharmaceutical and fine chemical industries in
Europe.
• This is a 4 year project in the final stages of set up,
supporting 3 PhD students
• Arran Chemical Company (Athlone, Ireland) and QUB
as sole participants, with the Almac Group as a
partner organisation
TransPot
9. Why get involved?
• As a micro-company (SME)
• Cash
• Build the team
• Partners
• Opportunity to develop new
markets
Why not get involved?
• As a micro-company (SME)
• Solely for the cash
• If uncertain of your partners
• If you are looking for a quick to
market approach
• If you struggle with your existing
admin burden
10. Why get involved?
• Almac
• Cash – generous support rate extends to all sizes of partners
• Helps build some of the smaller R&D teams
• Partners can be clients or potentially future clients
• Opportunity to develop new markets – can fund work into an area that
would be deemed too risky for current finite R&D resource
11. Comments/advice based on my experiences to date
• Partners – limit the number and ideally those you’ve already worked with
• Don’t just do it for the cash, there are definitely easier ways
• Don’t get lost in the science, other sections are just as important (to the EC)
• Travel – don’t just stay in NI and expect it all to happen
• Be prepared – have a good accountant and legal person on hand, admin too…
• Register as an expert on the Participant Portal and update profile regularly
• Engage with INI / ITI / NICPs / NCPs etc
