This session, presented in Chinese and English, highlights four students in the ASU Chinese Language Flagship, a multilevel, undergraduate program for students to achieve superior language proficiency while pursuing degrees in the academic major of their choice. The students, each of whom began studying Mandarin in college, offer a snapshot of this innovative program through brief presentations taken from their own course work. Following a brief overview of the ASU Flagship curriculum, the first presenter draws on his study of contemporary social, environmental and ethical issues to pose the question, “Turning the Desert Green: A Sustainable Landscape for the Future?” The second speaker discusses “Feminism in Buddhism,” which is part of her longer research project for a Flagship course on Chinese Religions. The final presenter, who completed the program last spring and is currently a first-year graduate student and teaching assistant, addresses pedagogical strategies for motivating beginning Chinese language learners.

This panel will address issues related to Chinese teacher preparation and liscensure in the United States. Across the nation, states vary as to how bilingual teachers and Chinese language teachers are certified to teach in the public schools. While teacher preparation programs are usually housed in institutes of higher education, some states have alternative programs for certification. As Chinese language programs expand, so will the need for highly qualified Chinese teachers. This panel of experts will speak to the issues, policies, challenges, and procedures related to the certification of Chinese teachers.

Mike Vanderwood, Ph.D. University of California, Riverside Using Response to Intervention with English Language Learners. Recent changes in federal legislation and California code provide educators an opportunity to implement response to intervention (RtI) approaches in general and special education. RtI decision making is particularly promising for English Language Learners (EL) because this model places a heavy emphasis on prevention strategies, and provides skill acquisition data that can be used to examine special education eligibility. The primary expected learning outcome is for participants to acquire a basic understanding how to use RtI with ELs.

The Last Leaf is a short story by the American writer O. Henry (1862-1910) commonly known in the history of American literature as "the author of surprise ending". It tells the story of an old artist who saves the life of a young neighbouring artist, who is seriously ill and dying, by giving her the will to live. O. Henry knew people very well, especially the ordinary people of New York. In his stories you can feel satirical criticism of the American way of life. Most of his short stories are full of warm sympathy for ordinary American people.
