2. Origin and homeland
The Slavs were a
group of peoples,
who inhabited
Eastern Europe till
VII-X century BC and
spoke similar
languages.

4. Way of life
The Slavs lived in
villages near rivers,
lakes or marshlands.
They used the water
barriers as a defense.
They cultivated their
land and grew millet
and wheat, petted
animals and birds,
hunted and fished.
5. Society
The basic social unit
was the clan. It was
usually led by the
eldest.
Some of the clans
were united in a tribe.
The leader of the tribe
was a prince.
7. The first Bulgarian empire (681 – 1018)
Led by Kubrat and
Asparuh the ancient
Bulgarians moved to
the Balkan Peninsula
and united with the
Slavs and Thracians.
And they formed the
new nationality of the
Bulgarians.
8. The reign of Khan Krum
During the governship
of Khan Krum (803-
814) Bulgaria grew to
the south-east,
inhabiting the territory
from nowadays Sofia
(811 A.D.) to
nowadays Odrin (813
A.D.).
9. Conversion of the Bulgarians
Prince Boris the First
– Michael (852-889)
imposed Christianity
as the official religion
to unite the ancient
Bulgarians and the
Slavs, who had
different religions and
to rise up the prestige
of Bulgaria among the
Christian countries.
10. The Alphabet
The same alphabet
(with some modifi-
cations) is used in
other languages as
Russian, Ukrainian,
Belarusian, Serbian,
Macedonian and
some Central Asian
Altaic languages.
11. The end of the First Bulgarian
Empire
After the battle Basil
the second ordered the
blinding of 14 000
Bulgarian captives.
When King Samuel
saw them he died.
Till 1018 the country
was conquered by the
Byzantium.
