Videos

Name: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974 Film)
Purpose: The film is about five friends that visit their
grandfathers house and end up being terrorized by killer with
a chainsaw. The movie’s villain was inspired by the real
murder Edward Gein. It created a believable horror setting
and was able to captivate an extremely large audience. I
believe that the intention of the film was to terrify people and
to popularise the idea of chainsaw wielding villains.
Genre: The genre of the movie is horror and thriller.
Target audiences: The original aim for the rating of the film
was a PG. However it ended up receiving an X rating. Due to
this some of the more violent and inappropriate scenes were
cut from the film. After it was resubmitted to the Motion
Picture Association, the film was rated R.
Name: The Kid (1921 Film)
Purpose: The kid was created to make people laugh, boost
Charlie Chaplin’s career and to popularise the comedy genre.
It was Charlie Chaplin’s first full length film as a director and
became massively successful.
Genre and visual style: The film was silent comedy drama. Due
to the film being so old it was shot in black and white and the
speed of the video was different to modern videos.
Target audiences: Due to the light-hearted humour and simple
themes, the film would be appropriate for the majority of the
age groups. These include children, teenagers, adults and the
elderly.
Name: A-Ha – Take On Me (1985 Music Video)
Purpose: The purpose of the music video was to display the
feeling of the music in a visual format. In addition to this it
was also made to increase the popularity of the already
famous song by allowing people to access it in a different
format.
Genre and visual style: The genre of the music video is action
romance. It has a unique visual style as it combines live action
footage with a hand drawn style of animation. The
combination of the two is seamless and is one of the reasons
why the music video has become so popular.
Target audiences: The target audience for the music video
would be the fans of the band A-Ha. The majority of these
would have been teenagers and young adults, however since
the video was released almost 30 years ago they are now
likely to be middle aged adults.
Name: Feed Me & Crystal Fighters – Love Is All I Got (2012
Music Video)
Purpose: The purpose of the video was to convey the ideas of
the song’s musicians in a strong visual format. The product
was a highly stylised music video with a strong positive
message. It displayed romance and the determination of an
individual in a relatable, modern fashion.
Genre: Music video, action, romance
Target audiences: The target audience was the fans of both
Feed Me and Crystal fighters. These people would primarily be
teenagers and young adults, as they tend to make up the
majority of the music genre’s fan base.
Name: Guardians of the Galaxy Trailer (2014 Movie Trailer)
Purpose: The purpose of the trailer was to give people a
preview of what the film had to offer. As well as this, it was
created with the intention of interesting people and making
them wish to see the full movie. It displayed some of the
prime elements of the film and combined fast paced humour
and action to make the film seem as appealing as possible.
Genre: Sci-Fi, Action, Adventure
Target audiences: The film seems to be too violent for children
to watch. I believe that it was intended to appeal to the
teenage and adult market. The primary audience would be
the fans of super hero and science fiction movies as that is
what the majority of the film is about.
Name: Jack and the party blower (2012 home video)
Purpose: The video was a short, humorous family video. The
purpose of it was simply to amuse people and make them
laugh. Since it was such a short video I do not believe that
there were any other motives for creating this video.
Genre and visual style: The genre of the video is humour. It
was filmed on a handheld camera and therefore has the visual
style of a home video.
Target audiences: The video was created without a target
audience in mind. Therefore video appeals to people of any
age group. I believe that it would be most appealing to
children and adult, primarily people in a family environment.
How popularity and visual style has changed
As time has gone on, the video industry has changed dramatically. People
now have access to a wide range of new technologies which when utilised
allow them to display their ideas in a more clear fashion then ever before.
Better cameras and special effect software have had a significant impact on
the way that people make their videos. To begin with, cameras only shot film
in black and white. Now however videos can be shot in full colour as well as
even in 3D. In addition to this, cameras can now shoot at larger frame rates
thus allowing for smoother looking footage. The special affects that are now
available are more realistic than ever before and are considerably more
accessible then they used to be. Also due to the larger budgets that many
productions are now given, massive teams of people can be hired to work on
films and music videos. With the increase in popularity of the video camera
and its technological advancements, far more people have access to a way of
creating their own videos. In the past video technology was only available to a
small amount of people, therefore there is far more competition now in the
video making industry. In addition to this there are more platforms on which
people can publish their work (e.g. YouTube) People’s expectation have also
changed, therefore there is also a strive to create bigger and better films. The
popularity of some genres have changed as time has gone on, the popularity
of a genre largely depends on the standards and opinions set by the public.
