Zambia to re-capitalise
copper mines
LUSAKA:
President
Michael Sata of Zambia
says his government will
re-capitalise the Zambia
consolidated copper mines,
zccm Investment Holdings.
His Facebook message
says the state will inject
some 275-million kwacha
(55-million us dollars)
into the firm, with a view
to enhance value addition
in the gemstone mining
sub-sector. President Sata
says the government wants
value addition through
cutting and polishing in the
gemstone sub-sector, in line
with the ruling Patriotic
front, PF Manifesto. He
says his administration is
determined to extract huge
benefits for the Zambian
people from the country's
rich natural resources.
President Sata also
says the developments in
the gemstone sub-sector
are just some of the things
he insisted on doing when
he became Head of State.
He says value addition
in gemstones and other
minerals was part of the PF
campaign promises, which
some pessimists doubted at
the time.
Mr. Sata also says the
doubters have, however,
been
proved
wrong
because Zambia has started
auctioning
gemstones
locally, which is all a result
of his bold decisions. Last
year, Zambia managed to
hold three auction sales
of gemstones from Kagem
Mines; and more than
six-million-800-thousand

of
gemstones
were sold for a total of

ogo consists of a long strip of
land in West Africa. It shares
borders with three countries
that include Benin, Burkina Faso
and Ghana. It has a coastline in
the south along the Bight of Benin
of the Gulf of Guinea in the North
Atlantic Ocean. Togo is primarily
divided in six geographic regions
featuring low – lying sandy beaches,
tidal flats, shallow lagoons, plateau
and mountains.
KEY SECTORS IN TOGO
Agriculture
Agriculture is the primary
economic activity of Togo, with a
GDP contribution of 40%, 20%, of
export income and employment
for over two-thirds of
the working population.
The majority of the
population is employed
in the production of food
and cash crops. The key
staple crops are maize,
cassava, rice, peanuts
and sorghum. Coffee,
cocoa and cotton are the
key cash crops that are
exported.
Energy
Togo produces 73% of
its total energy from such
as wood combustion and
electricity, and remaining
from hydro-carbons. The
government has been
focusing on creating
autonomy in generation
and distribution of energy,
whilst diversifying the
energy sources to cleaner
and renewable energy.
The government is taking
steps for sustained supply of
energy at a competitive cost. These
include construction of Contour
Global Togo SA (100MW power
station) and completion of regional
projects such as connection of
the CEB network to the Nigerian
TCN network and the African gas
pipeline project.
Mining and Quarrying
The mining of phosphate rock
dominates the mining industry of
Togo. The country was ranked the
14th largest producer of phosphate
rock in 2009. Other mineral
commodities produced in the
country include cement, clinker,
diamond, gold and limestone. The

phosphate reserves in Togo are
estimated to be about 60 million
tonnes. Societe Nouvellesdes
Phosphates (SNPT), a stateowned firm, is the key producer
and has invested about US$ 62
million in mining and excavation
materials, and is expected to
increase production to about 3
million tonnes. The government
has encouraged private sector
investment in the field of cement
production to increase production
to 2 million tonnes.
Information, Communication
and Technology
Togo is part of the West Africa
Cable System (WACS) project, an
ambitious project that is laying
underground fibreoptics cables
to link West Africa with Europe.
The telecommunication sector in
Togo is booming with a targeted
market penetration rate (new
subscriptions) of 60% by 2015. The
government is keen on reviewing
the regulatory framework and
opening up the market for other
players and investors.
Tourism
Tourism is fast becoming a key
contributor to GDP, underpinned
by growth in volume of tourists and
the country fast becoming a transit
hub for air travel and re-exports
to the sub-region. Currently, 400
hotels are concentrated around
Lome`, with a capacity of 30.000
rooms.
SEVEN REASONS FOR
INVESTING IN TOGO
Reason 1: Peace and Stability:
Togo is a peaceful and stable
country thus providing peace of
mind to the investor and safety to
his/her invested capitals.
Reason
2:
Geographical
Situation
and
infrastructure:
Located in West Africa along
Atlantic Ocean coastline and
bordered on the north by Burkina
Faso, on the east by Benin and on
the west by Ghana, Togo offers
by its strategic location and its
infrastructure, an ideal place
for industrial development and
commercial exchanges with West
Africa (ECOWAS), Europe and
North America. Togo is the sea
door for sahelian countries which
do not have access to sea (Mali,
Burkina Faso, and Niger).
Reason 3: Togo Membership
in sub regional Groupings (UEMOA,
ECOWAS): With 56 600 km2
and 6, 2 million inhabitants, and
its membership in sub regional
groupings, Togo has become a
large market claiming 320 million
ECOWAS inhabitants. Today, the
investment policy is more oriented
towards regional dynamism. It is
worth noting that by investing in
Togo the investor will have easy
access to all ECOWAS markets
from Togo.
Reason
4:
Investment
Potentials/Opportunities:
Togo
is packed with potential natural
resources. Phosphate, limestone,
platinum, bauxite can be mentioned
on mining side. The agriculture
sector remains the drive force for
economic growth. Fertile lands are
available in every region/county
and offer opportunities to develop
projects in the sector. Niches
of opportunities are available
in the area of Information and
Communication
Technologies.
The railways rehabilitation will
enhance the implementation of
the dry port project
in the northern part
of the country. There
are
opportunities
for building low cost
house.
Reason
5:
Conducive Business
Environment: There
is no restriction to
the right of foreigners
to
operate
local
corporates. A foreign
investor can establish
an affiliate owned at
100%. The process for
corporate registration
has been simplified
for the investor as a

reduction of corporate
tax has been observed, from 40%,
it got to 37% then to 29% currently.
The UEMOA financial market
remains accessible to investor and
provides the required safety and

Reason 6: Skilled Labor
Supply: The enrolment rate in
Togo hits 73% and ranks among
the highest in Africa. Regarding
vocational training, the country
has specialized schools providing
skilled labor.
The National Funds for

Keep Sustainability
at the heart of the development agenda
By kirit sobti,
editor, iat
editor@indoafricatimes.com
Will coming
generations
find it more
challenging
to stay alive
and flourish
on the
continent in
later years?
In literal sense how would one describe Sustainable
Development? It postulates a needed future state
for human cultures in which living conditions and
resource-use meet human needs without weakening
the sustainability of natural systems and the
environment, so that coming peers may also have
their wants met. Sustainable development draws
collective concern for the carrying capacity of natural
systems with the social and commercial challenges
confronted by humanity.
Africa is gifted with rich and varied renewable
and non-renewable natural assets; however its
folks continue to be amongst the poorest in the
world. Refining the well-being of people in Africa
necessitates sustainable development braced with
peace and steadiness, and with human, institutional
and organizational dimensions to accost instant
challenges, such as poverty and ailments.
Since some half a century ago when African
countries in full swing started attaining their political
independence, the landform has confronted several
challenges in its expedition for development. There
has been some degree of accomplishment but to a
great extent, the continent is quiet behind the rest of
the world in advancement.
As I have mentioned earlier, poverty rests as
the notable expansion challenge facing Africa. It
is connected to the environs in multifaceted ways,
chiefly in natural resource-based African economies.
About two-thirds of the populations in African
countries live in rural areas, stemming their main
revenue from agriculture.
Population in Africa are cutting trees for fuel
wood, land-degrading farming systems have been
undertaken, wildlife are being hunted to extinction,
all in a struggle to content today’s demanding living
wants. Awkwardly, these actions have not only
deteriorated the state of the deprived living in Africa
today, but they will also have consequences for
upcoming generations to come.
According to the World Bank, the sub-Saharan
population is rising at the rate of 2.5 percent per
year as compared to 1.2 percent in Latin America
and Asia. At that rate, Africa's population will double
in 30 years. Fast population growth has put a lot of
pressure on Africa’s ecosystems. Glitches such as food
security, land tenure, environ-mental degradation
and the absence of water supply are often related to
high rates of population growth.
In 1992 at the United Nations Conference on
Environment and Development, Member States were
called upon to assimilate the extents of sustainable
development into their growth strategies. At the 2002
World Summit for Sustainable Development (WSSD),
this song was further sung, commending Member
States to speed up their determinations at attaining
sustainable development. Later on, African countries
have incorporated these sustainable development
associated promises.
The maintenance of an environment of peace
and security is consequently one of Africa’s notable
development necessities. Separately from its costs in
human and material terms, battles hinder production,
harm infrastructure, avert the reliable delivery of
social facilities and upset societies. In spite of the
long-standing promises and the stress positioned by
African leaders on the course of regional integration,
this has been sluggish and hence, remains a major
test for Africa. It is thus no quirk that the Africa
Chapter of the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation
(JPOI) of WSSD, shapes in its preamble that since
the United Nations Conference on Environment and
Development (UNCED), sustainable development has
remained elusive for many African countries, with
poverty remaining a major challenge.
Experts claim that Africa can realize sustainable
development by climbing up “green economy”
initiatives. What is required is augmented
apportionments from within national budgets added
by donor funding. The United Nations Environment
Programme (UNEP) describes a green economy
initiative as one that results in “improved human
well-being and social equity, while significantly
reducing environmental risks and ecological
scarcities.”
Later on, doyens says that implementing this
edge through a notion known as “Low-Carbon
Climate Resilient Development” – meaning fetching
in projects that will help lessen greenhouse gas
emission, help adapt to climate change while
increasing income, will help Africa move in the
direction of sustainable development
Now there is a new concept for sustainable
Development stressed by H.E. Mr. James Michel,
President of Seychelles when he called on
Commonwealth leaders to cultivate the Blue Economy
notion as the base of equitable and sustainable
development through the Commonwealth Heads of
Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Colombo last year.
Can you trust it if somebody laid claim that there
occurs an economic method which does not yield
any waste, has zero discharges, however creates
jobs, shapes social capital and to add above all does
not include higher costs? Yes, the time has come to
conceive this concept.
It seems apparent that the subject of
environmentally friendly sustainable
development cannot be ignored if
the African continent is to encounter
its development challenges. The
connections are palpable and tough. If
the present generation of Africans finds
it tough to grapple with development
challenges in spite of current levels of
natural resource awards, will coming
generations find it more challenging to
stay alive and flourish on the continent
in later years? At that time, the
continent will have exhausted most of
its possessions and will be stalled from
acting its life-sustaining meanings. This
message must vibrate more strongly
with policy makers, community groups
and development partners and every
African thriving today!
I trust that if Africa is to come
across these ecological challenges, it
must take action at all levels. It has to
include global, national and community
World Green
Economy Summit
The World Green Economy Summit
(WGES) is to be held in Dubai on 15th
and 16th April, 2014 in conjunction with
session of Water, Energy, Technology,
and Environment Exhibition “WETEX
2014”. The summit is the first green
economy summit in the Middle East
and North Africa region with an aim to
bring together government, business
and finance leaders to counterfeit global
partnerships and provide paths to a
sustainable future for humankind.
In a recent press conference, H.E.
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Chairman
of the World Green Economy Summit
and MD CEO of Dubai Electricity
and Water Authority stressed that
private sector exhibits a remarkable
role in the evolution into green
economy. Excellency also emphasized
on the importance of forums which
explore and builds new opportunities
between the thinkers and decision
makers in both private and public
sectors. According to him, the World
Green Economy Summit in Dubai
would enhance the reputation of the
UAE as a global hub for exporting
and re-exporting green products and
technologies and as global gateway of
investment and green trade.
Excellency, Al Tayer also requested
the leaders and forerunners of green
economy in India to contribute in the
summit which will deliver real and
sustainable solutions underlining on
the importance of collaboration with
partners having the expertise. WGES
2014 is said to be held under the theme
Global Partnerships, Sustainable Future
and envisioned to complement the
sustainable future vision of the UAE and
the global efforts to combat climate
change.
activities. It must also encompass civil
society, public agencies and the private
sector in growth programs to aid in
alleviating the problems.
The stage has arisen for African
nations to reveal their ability to be able
to confront these challenges. There is also
a prerequisite for national governments
to engross the private sector successfully
to deliver business elucidations to
environmental challenges. Governments
should also felicitate invention that
allows the accomplishment of national
environmental primacies.
I believe that environmentally friendly
sustainable development in Africa is
almost decision making, trade-offs and the
delicate balance of significances. Like any
change process, it necessitates contribution
and commitment from top to bottom –
from government policies to individual
behaviors. In addition, I have confidence
in the new high-tech and social inventions
that will be vital to run alternatives to
help all Africans sustain their livelihoods
without draining the rare natural resources
available to the African continent.
The importance of the Blue Economy to
humankind cannot be underestimated: over
70% of our planet is covered by ocean; 90%
of the world’s trade in goods is conducted
by sea. They connect us all to each other.
And we must harness these connections for
development, not just enrichment.
To achieve sustainable development for all
it is important that we need to think and act
together. We have been thinking separately
and individually for a long time. It is time we
put our narrow differences aside and work
together, because only if we work together,
we can survive together.

Pressure Extraction System
THE PROCESS:-
Coffee Cleaning Blending:
The first step is thorough
cleaning and removal of defective
beans, followed by blending of
different types and size to ensure
best flavor.
Roasting Grinding: The
second step is roasting through
either batch or continuous
roasters. Roasted coffee is
reduced by grinding to suitable
size.
Extraction: The third step
is extraction of ground coffee
through a batch or continuous
system either using a pressure
vessel with hot water or an
alternate approach of countercurrent column battery unit.
Aroma
Recovery:
The
extracted coffee liquor is passed
through the aroma recovery plant.
In the plant the volatile aroma
is stripped off from the coffee
before it enters the evaporator.
The flavor is returned to coffee
just prior to it entering the spray
dryer.
Concentration: The fifth step
is concentration of the extract
through multi-effect evaporators
with TVR system.
Spray Drying: The sixth step
is conversion of concentrate to
instant coffee powder by spray
drying. Drying is done under
controlled conditions to protect
and preserve aroma and flavor.
Fluidized bed dryer is coupled
with the system.
Agglomeration:
Spray
dried powder then converted
into soluble granules in an
agglomerator tower.
Freeze
Drying:
Freeze
dryer retains aroma, improves
appearance and taste because
freeze drying takes place at a low
temperature which minimizes
heat damage and retains volatile
components (aroma). It also
increases the shelf life of the
dried product as compared to
standard drying practices. Freeze
drying involves dehydration of
food products at low temperature
and pressure. As a result only the
moisture is removed, leaving the
molecular structure intact. The
end product is light in weight
with least or no change in volume.
Worldwide
freeze-drying
technology is considered as
the ultimate amongst all other
dehydration methods. Hence
this technique is currently being
used for the production of instant
coffee.
Packing Filling: The
Instant Coffee Powder is taken to
the filling and packing stage. For
filling into tins or jars, vacuum
operated filling system is used.
For filling into sachets, a form fillsealing machine is used. The filled
containers / flexible packings
are then packed in the shipping
cartons and sent for dispatch to
the finished goods warehouse.

It’s no secret that there is a
pocket full of creativity when
it comes to Africa. From Pratt’s
inspirational campus in the
Clinton Hill section of Brooklyn,
the Fashion Department extends
students a concept-led, craftbased education at the heart of one
of the world's cultural epicenters.
Pratt Institute has set in
LaQuan-The Budding Star
motion a flashy new exhibit
called Black Dress which pays
tribute to African American
fashion designers. When Rihanna
famously walked her scarf out in
a gold cat suit for her Rude Boy
music video, you may be amazed
to know that it was twisted by
an up and coming designer from
Queens, who is fast becoming a
national sensation. His name is
LaQuan Smith and he has a furor
following.

straight lines with curls and surges.
Even less edgy borders are made
in this super gorgeous style that is
so on fad. Not every short hairstyle
for black women is made alike.
Although some short haircuts
look endearing, others can make
you look aged and out of style.
Selecting a brand-new and
fashionable short hairstyle for
black women can support you
to get a new look at all times,
so you can continuously entice
attention through your style.
The outstanding hairstyle is the

LaQuan Smith is an AfricanAmerican fashion designer who
founded and is the CEO of the
women's clothing brand LaQuan
Smith, LLC. Smith is based in
Queens, New York. LaQuan Smith
has combated cancer, outfitted
superstars like Lady Gaga and
Beyonce, and has shown at New
York Fashion Week. Smith is one
of the ten modern New York City
centered designers presented
in an exhibit at Pratt Manhattan
Gallery in Chelsea called Black
Dress which pays tribute to
African
American
designers.
Born and raised in St. Albans,
Smith has no proper training,
no monetary backers and his
grandmother taught him how
to stitch. But at age 26, he has
Vogue Magazine and a long list
of celebrity clients singing his
praises for what he calls a hip
hop Parisian style that Rihanna
put on the fashionista map. This
is the catsuit that she wore but
in the 3D version, and the gold

in a dress, says Smith.
Since he can't get the big

Adrienne Jones says it's a main
aim why she dreamed up the
exhibit. This is not the time for
us right now. We come and go but
the money isn't always there so
we have to try different venues to
get out, says Jones.

Royal Challengers Bangalore
Broke their Bank to get
the TIGER at 14 crore
Today, Yuvraj Singh becomes most expensive
signing at IPL 7 auction as Royal Challengers Bangalore
buys him for Rs 14cr. He turned to be a great hit or we
can say, the fact that IPL auctioneer Richard Madley
missed Kolkata’s bid got Yuvi sold for a handsome
amount.
On the same vein RCB owner Vijay
Mallya having the last laugh asserted,
“We are very, very happy to have
Yuvraj. We have to keep on bidding
because our captain was very keen on
him. That extra Rs.14crore was a bit
unfortunate, but the auctioneer has
the sole discretion. Everybody saw
him look around the room before the
hammer fell but he chose to continue.
So life goes on.”
Hopefully,
after
continuous
breakdown this auction will boost
this handsome with his far-leftbehind flamboyant, true Punjabi
characteristics and prove to be a
miracle in his career allowing him to start from the
scratch.
Erstwhile, this player had this continuous share of
predicaments from being dropped, rested, ignorned or
had to sit out due to injury concerns. He has come out
with flying colors proving his victory to the world.

the country's investment in the youth, and entitled on all directorial regions
to utilize innovative endeavors to this end. On the same strain, Ms. Halima

The “Prince Charming” of Indian Cricket team can truly
be defined as an important pillar of Indian batting.
Yuvraj Singh Bhandal is an esteemed part of the team
since the year 2000 and has made his strong presence
felt at regular intervals. Be it the Cricket World Cup
of 2011 when he was honoured
with the name of the Man of the
Tournament or being the first
batsman to hit six sixes in an over
in Twenty20 internationals and the
fourth in senior cricket.
Yuvi, as he is called by his
teammates, is an all-rounder
cricketer while his bowling style
reflects the orthodox pattern of
the slow left arm bowlers. The
Punjabi Tiger of cricket was born on
December 12, 1981 and made his
international debut for India against
New Zealand in the year 2003.
If described insanely, this lefthanded batsman is the face of Indian
youth who always weaponize his anger to amalgamate
with his hunger for victory in a match. The dark phase
came for the ostentatious sportsman of India when he
was diagnosed and cancer but, the Punjabi boy fought,
survived and came back with a bang to international
cricket.
Demba Kunda Khasseh FC

Demba Kunda in 26th
minute of the game and

The finale of the tournament

personalities; Assan Kujabi, Modou
Sowe and George Gomez, after
being awarded with certificates
for their involvement in sports by
the Soninkara Youth Development
Organization (SYDO). Also, a local
foreign bureau, Sisawo Money
Transfer also donated D5, 000 to
SYDO in the finale.
After the finale the victorious
head coach of Demba Kunda, Hagi
Kusa Touray, stated that on account
of taking charge as head coach he
has never allowed his team to beat
his side twice, accumulating that
he was beaten by his opponents
erstwhile to the final, which is why
they prepared for revenge in the
Super Cup. Meanwhile, Muhammed
Trerra, head coach of Julangaine,
asserted that his side was wretched
during the final because they
played sound.
12. 12 ENCOUNTER WITH EDITOR
MONDAY | FeBruARY 17, 2014
Considerable foreign support has helped Gabon to be one of the prosperous and stable
African countries. In an exclusive interview with H.E. Mr. Desire Koumba, Ambassador of
the Republic of Gabon to India shared with Kanchi Batra, Sub-Editor, INDO AFRICA TIMES
an overview of the country having abundant natural resources and his vision to enhance the
booming relationship between Gabon and India.
Gabon is one of Africa’s most
prosperous countries
Excellency, please comment on the
booming relationship between Gabon
and India.
The bilateral relations between
India and Gabon are very cordial at the
moment. The Embassy of Gabon was
established in India in the year 2008 to
show the will of the Republic of Gabon
to intensify the relationship with India.
We have had a lot of interactions with
the Indian public and private sector
and today I am happy to tell you that
there are a good number of Indian
businessmen going to Gabon either
to open some businesses or to settle
down. For your information, as part of
the diversification of our economy, the
government of Gabon has opened a
Special Economic Zone aimed at giving
a value addition to our raw materials.
Accordingly, we are inviting Indian
companies to take advantage of the S E Z
which offers them very attractive terms.
Gabon is among the first 15 African
countries to have implemented the
P an African e- network projects like
Tele-education, Tele- medicine etc.
What further developments have you
made in this sector?
Gabon is one of those countries who
immediately participated in this project
when it was inaugurated in 2009. I do
remember, H.E. Mr. Pranab Mukherjee,
P resident of India, during his tenure
as the Foreign Minister interacted with
the African counterparts and among
them was the Gabonese Minister also
as they talked of the ways and means
to develop this project. We have been
trying to take advantage of this asset in
tele- education and tele- medicine. Omar
Bongo University in Gabon has signed an
agreement with Amity University in India.
Also we have gone into a very heavy
project of modernizing our hospitals in
order to equip these hospitals with stateof-the-art technologies.
How attractive is the tourism sector of
Gabon for the Indian investors?
Gabon is a resource-rich country and
the sixth largest oil producer in SubSaharan Africa. It is well endowed with
arable land, forest, and mineral resources.
It has extraordinary biodiversity, as well
as rich deposits of manganese and iron
ore. Gabon has a lot of possibilities that
it is offering to the prospective Indian
investors. We have natural landscape,
flora and fauna which are coupled with
the fact that we are one of these rare
African countries who are set to develop
ecotourism. We have devoted 11% of our
national territory to the creation of 13
natural parks.
Industrialization of Gabon’ is one of
the main objectives of the Gabonese P
resident. What are your views on the
same?
Since taking office in October 2009,
His Excellency Ali BONGO ONDIMBA, the
P resident of Gabon has been carrying
out vast economic reforms meant to
transform our country into an emerging
economy by 2025, based on the following
three pillars:
H.E. Mr. Desire
Koumba
Ambassador, Embassy
of the Republic of
Gabon, New Delhi
» abon Vert (green Gabon), to
G
sustainably develop the country’s
natural resources;
» abon Industriel (industrial Gabon), to
G
process locally our minerals and export
high value added products;
» abon des Services (service orientated
G
Gabon), to develop the Gabonese
workforce and infrastructures.
Gabon is committed to diversify its
economy to become an emerging
economic power by 2050 via its
sustainable development strategy
referred to as Gabon Emergent. Kindly
shed some light on this programme?
Under the “Emerging Gabon” strategy
launched by the Gabonese Government
under the leadership of incumbent
President, H.E. Mr. Ali BONGO OND IMBA,
the idea is to transform Gabon into an
economic power by 2025. Consequently,
since coming to power in 2009, he has
been implementing reforms with a view
to enhancing the business climate to
attract investment.
