held over a three-day period in
April 2014, when it will become a

It is the event where different

the world stage, their trading
latent, etc. - through amusing and
animated carnival floats marching
through the lanes of Victoria,
the world’s smallest capital that
has unlocked itself to host this
happening ‘the melting pot of
cultures’.
The country will once again
brandish its bubbly colors with
this mighty carnival. As was the
case with the first carnival, there
are probable to be many foreign
partakers whose glides will link
those from the local community
in this vibrant parade through
Victoria.
Striking gatherings made up
of local audiences, guests and
the troops of visiting navies are

opportunity to interact with the
Burkinabe High Authorities to
debate about these projects.
In an exclusive interview to

of Burkina Faso to India, H.E.
Mr. Idriss Raoua OUEDRAOGO
said, “some of the major projects
that will be showcased are: the

he potential of Africa’s tourism is untapped,
inscribes Mthuli Ncube, African Development
Bank Group Vice-President and Chief
Economist, in the foreword of the inaugural issue
of the Africa Tourism Monitor, a joint initiative
produced by the African Development Bank in
partnership with the Africa Travel Association and
Africa House at NYU.
Africa is the most attractive and proven most
visited region as far as travel and tourism is
concerned. Tourism counts for a principal element
of the African economies. Tourism combines
people, culture and heritage. Very quickly, Africa is
turning as a tourist destination with countries like
Kenya, Tanzania, Egypt and South Africa creating
waves and sketching a new era in tourism.
During the past 30 years tourism has been one
of the fastest rising industries in Africa, so much so
that it has turn out to be a commanding driver of
economic growth and a key approach for regional
cooperation among African economies. The most
sought-after African destinations are the tourist
attractions in Egypt, Kenya and South Africa,
Zimbabwe, Mauritius, Seychelles and Tunisia,
with most of the magnets catering to the tastes of
middle-class tourists.
The continent's
natural scenery, warm
people, long history
and affluent and unique
flora and fauna have
enthralled many tourists.
Indian entrepreneurs
could also precisely
focus on different kinds
of tourism products,
such as adventure
tourism, coastal and
safari tourism; medical
tourism; wildlife
tourism; eco-tourism
and cultural tourism.
According to the United Nations World
Tourism Association, 63.6 million international
tourists arrived in Africa in 2012, compared to
17.4 million visitors in 1990. The top six countries
for international tourist receipts in 2012 were, in
descending order: Egypt ($9.94 billion), followed
by South Africa ($9.994 billion), Morocco ($6.711
billion), Tunisia ($2.183 billion), Tanzania ($1.564
billion) and Mauritius ($1.477 billion).
The economic potential of tourism is
outstanding, with direct and indirect impact on
employment. In Africa alone, travel and tourism
created 8.2 million direct jobs in 2012. Africa is
home to the world’s youngest population, with
close to 70% of its population below the age of 25,
and youth constituting about 37% of the labour
force, but creating up approximately 60% of
unemployment. For this reason, the AfDB targets
to endorse tourism through the enlargement of
cross-border infrastructure and regional transport
corridors, which will simplified the movement of
people and goods on the continent.

reps from the world’s most famous carnivals who
will be called to the islands to take part in this
exhilarating international event.
While the BRICS summit takes place in South
Africa recently, one of the key items that has
emerged in media, and encountered spotlight in
the summit, was the issue of tourism. The BRICS
countries have power of giant latent for tourism;
with coordination between them and provisions of
better infrastructure and communication, tourism
can be a major revenue earner.
Another example is INDABA which is one of the
largest tourism marketing events on the African
calendar and one of the top three ‘must visit’
events of its kind on the global calendar.
For two years in a row, INDABA has won the
award for Africa’s best travel and tourism show.
This award was offered by the Association of
World Travel Awards.
The Africa Travel Association (ATA) will hold
its 39th Annual World Congress in Uganda from
November 11-16, 2014. Dubbed as the “Pearl
of Africa,” Uganda is a country with the best of
everything the continent of
Africa has to offer tourists,
with a plenty of natural and
cultural assets, strong eco-
tourism products, counting
more than half of the
world’s mountain gorilla
population, and a weight
on community, rural and
adventure tourism.
I must bring this in
your notice that for the
first time in the United
Nations World Tourism
Organization’s (UNWTO)
history, their General
Assembly (GA) was co-hosted by two countries
– Zambia and Zimbabwe. The UNWTO jointly
assembled its GA in both Livingstone on the
Zambia side and in Victoria Falls on the Zimbabwe
side of the famous falls.
The event was acknowledged as the best
attended in the history of the organization
during the Aug. 24-29 event with a record of
900 delegates from the media alliance, 121 full
delegates from the member states, 140 delegates
from all over the world, 49 foreign ministers and
750 other delegates attending the event.
Certain tourist attractions are admired for the
reason that there is an extraordinary sensation it
affords to people who visit such places and this
is outside the fact that places like this hold a very
rich heritage and detection.
Land-based tourism is a foremost commercial
activeness in the continent, attracting millions of
tourists to different sites throughout the region
each year and producing good number of paper
(currency) in foreign exchange earnings. Places
such as the Pyramids of Egypt, the Great Rift Valley
of Eastern and Southern Africa, Great Zimbabwe,
Table Mountain in South Africa, Mount Kenya in
Kenya and Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania are few
of the chief attractions.
Talking about the palaeontology sites,
several African countries counting Ethiopia,
South Africa, Kenya and Benin are graced
with this. In the Mother Land, Ethiopia, the
Government is utilizing these sites to endorse
palaeo-tourism, and to generate income.
South Africa has also made palaeontology and
other cultural heritage sites as a great deal of
attention for their tourism industry.
Now what takes a tourist to a country,
region or continent? The answer is here….
I met a tourist while travelling in Africa
who said “I wanted to see something different
from Europe and I decided to visit Kenya and
Tanzania. It is a different feel I got.”

phenomenon that brings rain to its
mountainous region. Meghalaya is a state of
great scenic beauty with undulating rivers,
waterfalls, sparkling mountain streams,
emerald-green lakes, gorges, precipitous
ravines and panoramic views from hilltops. It
is inhabited by mainly three tribes: the Khasis,
the Jaintias and the Garos. Weaving, pottery,
stone carving, metal work and basketry are
traditional village work. As with most of the
North Eastern states, Meghalaya is diversely
multi-cultural, multi ethnic and multi

Dark circles around the eyes

up for Commonwealth Games due
in Glasgow, Scotland from July 23
to August 3.
The 29-year-old Mvuyekure
will compete in the marathon
event alongside Dieudonne Disi,
while Epiphanie Nyirabarame will
compete in the women’s race. Disi,
who turns 34 years in November,
has indicated his intention to win a
medal in this year’s edition before
he retires.
The Glasgow Games are likely
to be his last major international
championships and he hopes
training from Kenya will boost his
chances of quitting the sport on a
high. Last month, Disi won silver in
the Carnaval half marathon where
he clocked one hour, four minutes
and 43 seconds, 13 seconds behind
Burundian Abraham Niyonkuru
who won the race.
New Times
holds the current national 200m
record of 22.80 (+0.9 m/s) which
she set at a meet in Clemson, USA
on 17th May, 1997.
Meanwhile, Janet followed
her dominant display in the 200m
event by running an equally fast of

The former Kumasi Girls
Secondary School student has been
in top form this season, having set
a new PB of 23. 36 secs in March
when winning the 200m event at the
US JUCO Championships earlier this
year.
She leads Ghana’s qualifiers to
the 2014 Commonwealth Games and
the African Athletics Championships.
It will be recalled that Janet

who won seven gold medals and
national titles, five silver medals,
and one bronze medal at the
prestigious JUCO Championships
that ended on Saturday, 8th March,
2014.
She won gold in the women’s
200m race in a new national indoor
record of 23.81secs after, having
secured a silver medal in the 60m
final, where she ran the same time
as the winner, but lost out on the
photo-finish. She claimed a third
medal as part of her school’s
4x400m silver medal team.
Amponsah’s time of 23.81
secs broke Monica Twum’s
13-year old record set as a student
at Texas Christian University.

12. ENCOUNTER WITH EDITOR12
Ambassador Soni, you have a
distinguished career, a former
Indian Diplomat, an industrialist
and definitely a role model for the
young generation. How has been your
tenure?
I was privileged to be a member of
the Indian Foreign Service for 35 years.
During this period I had the honour to
serve as a diplomat in various parts of
the globe such as Russia (then USSR),
Egypt, Malaysia, the U.K., Australia, Fiji,
Senegal, Jamaica and Ukraine, the last
four as Ambassador/High Commissioner
of India.
Having worked in Commerce
Ministry at the beginning of my career
my orientation has always been to
promote India’s economic/trade ties.
During my London posting as Counsellor
(Commercial) in the early 1980s I
contributed significantly to boost our
trade ties.
In Senegal where G-15 summit was
held in the early 1990s as Ambassador
of India I worked hard to make the
visit of P.M. Shri Narasimha Rao a path
breaking one during which foundation of
our Africa’s new engagement policy was
laid. This paved the way subsequently for
India’s TEAM NINE INITIATIVE targeted
towards West African countries and
subsequently to the various Partnership
Business Conclaves eventually
culminating in the India-Africa Forum
Summits at the top level.
So the my career of 35 years as a
diplomat was indeed eventful and most
satisfying during which I worked real
hard to promote India’s interests but
also got opportunities to gain knowledge,
experience and enrich myself in many
ways.
Overseas Infrastructure Alliance is
a leading project development and
management company with presence
in India and across Africa. How did
your establishment come out?
We started with our vision to become
a premier project development and
management company, contributing to
the sustainable growth of individuals,
industries and nations. It is satisfying
that with our skill-sets leveraged from
across a broad-spectrum of advanced
Indian industries we are well on way to
achieving our mission. As a professionally
managed organisation, with high ethical
work standards, we are setting new
benchmarks of excellence with every
project we undertake. Let me clarify that
as of now our activities are concentrated
abroad.
How does Overseas Infrastructure
Alliance envision its sectorial
recognition in Africa with innovative
technologies? Give an insight on
how OIA is distinct from other
companies active in Africa and how
your strategies and plans would
truly contribute in enhancing the
present development scenario of the
continent?
OIA has a head start as it is
already engaged in more than a dozen
countries with the aim of building a
sustainable partnership centered on
capacity building, skill development and
technology dissemination. Based on our
track record in Ethiopia, Mozambique,
Republic of Congo, Sudan, Burkina
Faso, Rwanda we hope to be awarded
prestigious contracts in increasing
number of countries. It will be our
earnest endeavor to contribute to the
development scenario in the countries
concerned in a significant manner.
After knowing Africa so closely for
many years, can you share with us
some of your memorable moments
associated with it?
We are not in Africa with a
mercantilist approach like some
countries are doing merely to exploit
resources and make money. OIA’s
commitment towards the continent is
through Corporate Social Responsibility
(CSR). As a unique initiative undertaken
by OIA a charitable body “OIA Health
and Welfare Endowment” was
registered in Ethiopia a few years back.
The Endowment has members from
Ethiopian Health Ministry and other
Government agencies.
In reply to your specific question
OIA’s most memorable moment has to
be when as a part of our long term CSR
commitment a state-of-the-art OIA Eye
care hospital within the campus of the
Zewditu Hospital was inaugurated by the
President of Ethiopia and dedicated it to
the nation on March 20, 2014.
What is your vision for India-Africa
at global front and how according
to you, the financial institutions can
contribute effectively and efficiently
in development and infrastructure of
the continent?
India as a fast growing economy has
striven to contribute to development of
Africa particularly in the areas of human
resource, knowledge generation and
infrastructure development.
African countries do need
infrastructure to be built fast. Apart
from ports, roads and bridges there is
an urgent need to increase the transport
capacity, including the railway network
to link it with the far flung areas where
their precious mineral and other reserves
are located.
India and Indian companies like OIA
are best placed to be partners. We are
proud to be a part of that process as a
partner.
Africa needs to advance its infrastructure to accomplish its latent to become the next engine
of global growth. The OIA is a project development, execution and management company
that has been active on the continent for 11 years. Kanchi Batra, Sub-Editor, IAT interacted
with Amb. V.B Soni, Chairman of OIA who has brought most of its trained staff from India to
the African countries providing their own skills.
