Frequently Asked Questions about Indicus Analytics Products
1. Frequently Asked Questions about Indicus Analytics Products
Software v/s Excel data sheet
The product is offered with a software package. The package allows the user to navigate, select
locations, data points and extract data. The data can be extracted as a spreadsheet, as graphs, as
thematic maps. Additionally, there are in-built pdf files with brief profiles. It is possible for a user to
select all the data points and all the locations (dist/ city) and extract the entire data set as a single
spreadsheet. The objective of the product is to allow the user to navigate easily, create meaningful
extracts, extract data in a form that allows further processing and analysis
Variants to service different needs
The products usually have two versions – Premium and Basic. The premium version has all the data
points, whereas the basic version has lesser data points. Typically, the premium version will have
normally about twice the data points of basic version. The dummy database provided clearly mentions
which data points are available in the basic version.
Additionally, we provide the following variants in our district/ city level products:
All the product variables are classified into broader categories in each product. These
categories may vary from 3-10 in different products. A buyer can, in some of the products buy
some of the broader categories for all the geographical units.
A buyer can buy all variables for a state or a set of up to 7 states (district level products only)
A buyer can buy only state level data for all the states of India (this option is available in MSL
only)
A buyer can buy all variables for a region (the country is divided into 4 regions – North,
south, east and west) (district level products only)
A buyer can buy all variables for any of the following sets of districts, or for a combination of
these sets (1,2,3 or all 4 sets)
o The alpha districts (the top 60 by market size)
o The beta districts (the next 120 by market size)
o The gamma districts (the next 150 by market size)
o The delta districts (the rest of the districts)
For city level products (CSL, HSL), a buyer can buy all variables for any of the following sets
of cities, or for a combination of these sets (1,2,3 or all 4 sets)
o The alpha cities (the top 10)
o The beta cities (the next 20)
o The gamma cities (the next 20)
o The delta cities (the rest of the cities)
Only in the rarest of rare cases do we go beyond the above variants.
A buyer can buy multiple copies of a product. This is in the form of installation keys. The prices for
additional keys are as follows
10% of product price for each additional key (1-4 additional keys)
8% of product price for each additional key (5-9 additional keys)
6% of product price for each additional key (10-15 additional keys)
In case more keys are required, the prices are 3% of product price or Rs 5,000 each whichever
is higher.
Discounts
We normally do not have discounts on a single product, but we try an accommodate customers who
have a long term relation with us. For multiple product purchases in one go we offer the following
standard discounts –
5% of the total amount for two products
10% of the total amount for three products
15% of the total amount for four products
20% of the total amount for five products
The Product Software
All Indicus Premium Databases come with a query software. The software interface is similar
for all our products. The software needs to be installed with a user key, which is generated for
a single PC. Multiple keys are provided as a charged service. Once installed, you are ready to
start. The first screen is the user access screen where you can set your password.
2. Subsequently, you will be led to the main screen. The main features are Query selection,
Results, Maps and Reports. Query selection allows you to select the state, the district, the
variable and the year. The districts displayed are those for the states selected only. However
one can select all the states, in order to select all the districts. The variables can be selected
from the scroll box. One can select multiple variables in one go. In order to see the detailed
definition of any variable one can use the right click function, which will open up a definition
window. The last item for selection is the year for which data is to be extracted. You then ask
for data or maps
Outputs
The outputs of the query are in two forms – results worksheet and painted maps. The
worksheet functions like a standard spreadsheet and also allows you to save the query results
as an excel sheet. It further allows you to create graphs and charts which are feature rich and
can be saved as picture files separately and used to add value to your standard presentations
which may be in applications such as the standard power point
Graphs and Maps
The mapping function is an additional feature which allows you to represent the data on maps
for added punch to your presentations. The maps can also be exported as image files to be
added to your standard presentations. The software allows you to change the colors and to
vary the scales.
In built Reports
For those in a hurry and wanting quick snapshots, we have created in built one page reports on
each of the smallest geographic unit (district/ city) which display some of the data. These
reports can be extracted in two ways. The first way is to go to the reports menu, select the
district/ city desired and extract. An acrobat pdf window will open up with the report On the
other hand, while on the maps, one can place the cursor on a district/ city and extract the
reports from there
The entire data set can be extracted and used for various analysis. Additionally, a user can insert his
own data into the results sheet (say district level sales data) and conduct analysis.

Data Sources
The key data comes from highly reliable sources - NSSO various rounds, CSO, RBI, RCH, Census of
India, etc. This is supplemented by our own large primary surveys and secondary information. The
total samples would exceed 1 million records over a 20 year time series.
Our analysts and experts then work on the data. They use various econometric, operations research and
statistical techniques and Cross-check in many ways to give out the final estimates.
We also ensure consistency & comparability of data across time and geography
Our key differentiators
Processed very large data bases over long time series cycles
Developed econometric models to process existing and future sets
Created panels to conduct large surveys at short periods of time at low cost
Products developed and refined over 5 years with an established customer base
Economic geography drilled down till district, city and even sub city and block level
Information is relevant in today’s scenario
At prices only a small fraction of what MR and evaluation with national footprint would cost
Delivered in easy to use, graph and map software
Wide range of macro/micro economic indicators
What is the Product uniqueness – its value proposition?
Information about the economy and consumers at extremely granular levels - Currently at city and
district levels, and in future up to neighborhood levels (eg. Delhi will be segmented into 150
neighborhoods). This is further segmented into various income groups - such as “Number of
Households owning cars and having an annual income between 150,000 and 300,000 in Karol Bag
Neighborhood”
11. Purpose
- Easily mine-able information to marketers in order to enable them to target their sales and marketing.
- To provide consulting and research firms, data that is is not easily available and they need to only
extract the data for analysis, reporting and advising.
Such data is not available easily in India at such granular levels. We provide in the range of 200-250
variables for every geographic level. The data is compiled using various techniques – large data sets are
processed, proprietary surveys are done, Econometric and mathematical modeling is applied and finally
the processed estimates are published
The key value - It will take a long time and will cost at least 10 times the price points of our product to
create this sort of information. Essentially, we are developing these data sets and selling as a product.
The end user has a readily available, off the shelf ready-to-use data set.
The range of utilities of the products would include the following - Know consumer characteristics,
Identifying Potential Markets, Planning a marketing strategy, Opening a branch, Monitoring sales
efforts, Prioritizing & ranking markets, Benchmarking sales against potential, Location Choices,
Writing a report for PR purposes, Presenting to superiors/ investors, Sourcing of inputs, Getting
insights others don’t have, Delivering services where they are required, Identifying demand potential of
select locations
