- 2. Deep overbites can be effectively controlled with preadjusted appliances when the following principles are observed: 1. Avoid extractions in low-angle cases whenever possible. 2. When using .022" slots use .019"×.025" working archwires. www.indiandentalacademy.com
- 3. 3.Use anterior bite plates at the beginning of treatment in moderate-tolow angle cases. Upper anterior bite plate is effective in initial leveling stages of moderate-to-lowwww.indiandentalacademy.com angle deep bite cases.
- 4. 4. Use light initial forces to avoid deepening the bite. Use of elastics during initial leveling and aligning causes "roller coaster" effect— tipping of cuspids into extraction sites with resultant posterior open bite and increase in anterior overbite. www.indiandentalacademy.com
- 5. 5. Avoid elastic retraction of cuspid brackets. "Lacebacks" prevent anterior tipping of cuspids and retract cuspids without distal tipping. Preadjusted brackets on upright or distally tipped cuspids create extrusive effect on incisors upon initial archwire placement. www.indiandentalacademy.com
- 6. 6. Band or bracket second molars as early as possible. Earliest possible banding of second molars helps open bite in moderate-to-lowwww.indiandentalacademy.com angle cases.
- 7. 7. Use Class II elastics selectively. With Class II elastics, extrusive force on lower posterior teeth encourages bite opening. www.indiandentalacademy.com
- 8. 8. Do not hurry final leveling of the arches; use flat rectangular wires at first, then add bite opening curves as needed. Slight accentuated curve in upper archwire and reverse curve in lower archwire can sometimes enhance bite opening during completion of leveling with rectangular archwires. www.indiandentalacademy.com
- 9. 9. Use gentle forces for space closure in extraction cases. Excessive force on rectangular wires during space closure can cause archwire deflection and binding, ineffective sliding mechanics, loss of anterior torque control, and bite deepening. www.indiandentalacademy.com
