LAB PROCEDURES IN REMOVABLE PARTIAL DENTURES
The fabrication of removable partial denture includes various
laboratory procedure steps. The steps involved in fabrication of RPD
are similar to those followed in fabrication of complete denture
except in few additional procedures. These stages are slightly more
complex compared to those followed in complete denture.

2. Preparing the diagnostic cast.
-Primary impression are made using irreversible
hydrocolloid impression material.
-Cast is poured within 10 min after making
impression with dental stone with two pour
technique.
-The cast is separated about 45 min after the set of
gypsum.

3. Evaluation of diagnostic cast.
After making diagnostic cast, they should be evaluated to
determine the problem that clinician might face during
fabrication of denture
Diagnostic cast can be evaluated using two procedures
-surveying the diagnostic cast using a surveyor
-Mounting the diagnostic cast on articulator.
After evaluating the diagnostic data and diagnostic cast, the
mode of treatment that would be best suit the patient is
determine. The outline of treatment is framed before
starting the treatment. www.indiandentalacademy.com
4. Designing the prosthesis
Designing the prosthesis includes type of component for
partial denture, determining the location of various
component, determining the path of insertion and
choosing the type of material for each component etc.
designing can be done using the instrument called
surveyor

5. Secondary cast or master cast.
-The secondary impression is made after prosthetic
mouth preparation using alginate.
-Preparation of master cast includes pouring the
secondary impression using dental stone.
-The cast is poured with two pour technique within 10
min of impression making.
-The impression and the cast should be separated only
after 45 to 60 min .
-The master cast is surveyed and the marking made on
the primary cast are transferred to the master cast.
The master cast is used to fabricate the prosthesis

6. Fabricating the frame work
The metallic framework is fabricated by casting was
pattern. Casting is done using a refractory cast. A
refractory cast is prepared by duplicating the master cast.
Under cuts and relief areas in the master cast should be
blocked out before duplicating. The wax pattern is
prepared on refractory cast as per planned design. The
refractory cast is invested and the wax is burn out and the
resulting mould is casted using molten metal. The
material to be used to fabricate the framework is
determined during the treatment planning phase. After
casting the frame work should be finished and polished

7. The framework should be try in before
fabricating the trial denture. During frame work
try-in, occlusal interference and fit is examined
using indicator wax/paste

8. Altering the master cast
This is done for functional reline, fluid wax
and functional selective pressure dual
impression technique. In all this technique,
master cast is made using anatomic
impression. This anatomic master cast is
altered according to functional impression
made latter.

9. Fabricating the trial prosthesis
The framework is used as the base for the trial prosthesis.
The master cast is used to fabricated the trial denture. An
acrylic temporary denture base is attached to the frame
work to the edentulous area. The acrylic should be easily
be detachable during de waxing. Hence it should be
fabricated such that it does not interlock with the
framework
Next the occlusal rims are fabricated over the
temporary denture base. The jaw relations are recorded.
After recording the jaw relation the master cast are
articulated in the articulator
The teeth selection and arrangement of teeth is done on
occlusal rim. The trial denture is waxed up and the trial
denture is ready for try-inwww.indiandentalacademy.com
10. Processing the trial denture
After try-in is done in patient mouth error correction
and modification are done according to requirement of
the patient. Next follows the waxing up of trial denture
and wax carving done for teeth and root and soap
polishing done. Flasking, dewaxing, packing, curing,
finishing and polishing procedures are carried out.
This follows by clinical step of denture insertion and
evaluation
