1. What Is an Adjective? 
• An adjective is a word that describes a noun or a 
pronoun. 
• An adjective tells what kind or how many. 
The yellow butterfly landed on the grass. 
Yellow is an adjective because it tells what kind 
of butterfly. Not always, but often, adjectives 
come before the word they modify.
Name the adjectives 
Do not Include the articles 
1. Male lions have thick manes. 
2. They look proud and fierce. 
3. Female lions are gentle mothers. 
4. They take good care of the little cubs. 
5. The cubs have pretty, spotted coats.

2. Articles and Demonstratives 
• A, an, and the are special adjectives called articles. 
• A and an refer to any person, place, or thing. The refers 
to a particular person, place, or thing. 
• This, that, these, and those are demonstrative adjectives. 
They tell which one. 
This clown fish is swimming faster than that fish. 
This and that are both demonstrative adjectives.
Identify the articles and 
demonstrative adjectives 
1. The sky was bright blue outside the window. 
2. I saw a group of puffy clouds. 
3. Those clouds looked like cotton. 
4. I fastened the seat belt before the flight. 
5. During the flight, I tried to read a book.

3. Comparing with Adjectives 
• Add –er to one-syllable adjectives to compare two. 
• Add –est to one-syllable adjectives to compare more than 
two. 
• Use more and most, less and least, not –er and –est with 
most longer adjectives. 
The bay horse is faster than the roan, 
Use –er because you are comparing two horses, 
the bay and the roan.
Complete each sentence 
1. A peacock is **** than a turkey. (colorful) 
2. Swans are **** than ducks. (large) 
3. Geese are **** than swans. (noisy) 
4. Hummingbirds are the **** birds of all. (small) 
5. Eagles are **** than hawks. (powerful)

4. Comparing with Good and Bad 
• The adjectives good and bad have special forms for 
making comparisons. 
• Use better and worse to compare two. 
• Use best and worst to compare more than two. 
They were the best looking ducks on the 
entire lake full of ducks. (more than two being 
compared)
Identify if the adjective is comparing two or more 
or no comparison 
• 1. Rob practices every day, and he loves good music. 
• 2. Yesterday was a very bad day for Rob. 
• 3. The afternoon was worse than the morning. 
• 4. Rob took his best trumpet to school in the morning. 
• 5. He had a bad fall after lunch. 
• 6. It was Rob’s worst fall, and he dented his trumpet.

5. Proper Adjectives 
• A proper adjective is formed from a proper noun. 
• A proper adjective begins with a capital letter. 
The Persian cat likes to sleep in the sink. 
Persian is capitalized because it is a 
proper adjective based on the proper 
noun Persia..

• 3. poetry (Greece) 
• 4. desert (Africa) 
• 5. castle (Austria) 
• 6. seacoast (Ireland)
