2. Internet
“[A] new communications technology was developed
that allowed people to communicate almost instantly
across great distances […] it revolutionized business
practice […] and inundated its users with a deluge of
information. […] Governments and regulators tried
and failed to control the new medium. Attitudes
toward everything from news gathering to diplomacy
had to be completely rethought”

5. Technologisch imaginaire
Gevoel van déjà vu: “the repetition of deeply
ingrained ways in which we think, talk, and write
about new image and communication
technologies” (Lister et al., New Media: A
Critical Introduction. 2003: 63).
Verlangens naar volledigheid en compleetheid,
geprojecteerd op een 'ander' bestaan; het zijn
(media)technologieën die dat 'andere' vervolgens
dichterbij moeten brengen

10. Social Media

11. Communicatieverlangens
Droom van wederzijds begrip, geest-tot-geest
contact, een “utopia of a concourse of
consciousness” (John Durham Peters, Speaking
into the Air. 1999: 14)
Herhaaldelijk zichtbaar in bestaande, gefaalde en
imaginaire communicatietechnologieën
Mediageschiedenis lijkt een lineair verloop te
veronderstellen naar 'steeds sneller, steeds beter'

13. 'Herovering' van contact
Radio begon ooit als tweeweg-communicatie
Televisie was 'radio-plus', 'telefoon-plus'
Nieuwe media positioneren massamedia als
boosdoener; “nu heeft eindelijk het individu een
stem”

15. Wat nu met social media?
Vooruitgangsdrang: de boot niet missen?
→ Ja (Western Union & Bells telefoonpatent)
→ Nee (Second Life...)
Authentieke directe communicatie?
→ Ja (Twitter als 21e eeuwse 'vroege-radio')
→ Nee (Net zo goed geruchten en misleiding)
