2. Penjelasan
Kerusuhan Mei 1998 adalah kerusuhan rasial terhadap etnis
Tionghoa yang terjadi di Indonesia pada 13 Mei–15 Mei
1998, khususnya di Ibu Kota Jakarta namun juga terjadi di
beberapa daerah lain. Kerusuhan ini diawali oleh krisis
finansial Asia dan dipicu oleh tragedi Trisakti di mana empat
mahasiswa Universitas Trisakti ditembak dan terbunuh
dalam demonstrasi 12 Mei 1998. Hal inipun mengakibatkan
penurunan jabatan Presiden Soeharto, serta pelantikan B. J.
Habibie.

3. Lokasi
Kerusuhan utama terjadi di Medan, Jakarta, dan Surakarta.

4. Latar
Belakang
Kerusuhan ini diawali oleh krisis finansial Asia dan
dipicu oleh tragedi Trisakti di mana empat
mahasiswa Universitas Trisakti ditembak dan
terbunuh dalam demonstrasi 12 Mei 1998. Hal
inipun mengakibatkan penurunan jabatan Presiden
Soeharto, serta pelantikan B. J. Habibie

5. 12 Mei - Kemarahan masyarakat terhadap kebrutalan aparat dalam tragedi Trisakti
dilampiaskan kepada warga keturunan Cina
13 Mei - Presiden Soeharto, yang sedang berada di Kairo untuk menghadiri pertemuan
negara-negara berkembang, memutuskan kembali ke Indonesia
15 Mei 1998 - Sikap anarkis massa memuncak dan menyebabkan puluhan gedung, rumah,
maupun toko dibakar
16 Mei 1998 - Warga etnis Tionghoa eksodus meninggalkan Indonesia akibat situasi yang
tak kondusif (pembakaran, penganiayaan, dan pelecehan seksual)
21 Mei 1998 - Soeharto akhirnya mundur dari kursi kepresidenan dan digantikan B. J.

7. ° Prabowo Subianto Djojohadikusumo dipecat secara tak
hormat dari TNI
° Sebanyak 113 korban kerusuhan dikubur secara massal di
TPU Pondok Rangon
° Joko Widodo selaku presiden terpilih diharapkan mampu
mengusut kasus ini secara tuntas dan menghukum berat
para "dalang"
Penyelesaian kasus

8. Dari seluk-beluk kasus pelanggaran hak asasi manusia Mei 1998, kita belajar :
1) Menghargai sejarah.
"Jas merah (jangan sekali-sekali melupakan sejarah)!" - Soekarno
2) Menghargai hidup, baik itu hidup kita sendiri maupun hidup orang lain
"Hidup itu indah....... jikalau kita mau menghargainya!"
3) Berani mengakui kesalahan
Jangan seperti para aktor kerusuhan Mei 1998 yang saling tuduh-menuduh, tapi akuilah kesalahan
