- 3. What Is The Universe The universe is all of space, time, matter, and energy that exist. Most people think of the universe as just space, but space is just the framework, the “scaffolding” in which the universe exists. Furthermore, space and time are intimately connected in a four dimensional fabric called space time. Amazingly, some hypotheses suggest that the universe we live in is not all there is. In this case, there is more than just space, time, matter, and energy. Other dimensions exist, and possibly other universes. None of those models, however, have yet been confirmed.

The law of conservation of energy demands that energy cannot be created nor destroyed.

- ১৯২০ সালের দিকে আলবার্ট আইনস্টাইন এক গভীর সমস্যা নিয়ে হাবুডুবু খাচ্ছিলেন। সমস্যাটি মহাবিশ্বের প্রকৃতি এবং এর সম্ভাব্য পরিণতি নিয়ে। তার মত বিজ্ঞানীর অবশ্য এসব সমস্যা নিয়ে খুব বেশি হাবুডুবু খাওয়ার কথা নয়। আপেক্ষিকতার বিশেষ তত্ত্ব এবং আপেক্ষিকতার সাধারণ বা ব্যাপক তত্ত্ব দুইটিই বিজ্ঞানের জগতে প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয়ে গেছে। অভিকর্ষ বলের প্রভাবে স্থান-কালের বক্রতা যে আলোর গতিকেও বাঁকিয়ে দিতে পারে, তা এডিংটনের পরীক্ষায় হাতে কলমে প্রমাণিত হয়ে গেছে ১৯১৯ সালের জুনের দুই তারিখে। যে বুধ গ্রহের বিচলন নিউটনের মাধ্যাকর্ষণ নিয়ম দিয়ে কোনভাবেই মেলানো যাচ্ছিল না, আইনস্টাইনের আপেক্ষিকত তত্ত্ব সংক্রান্ত গণনার ছাঁচে ফেলে খাপে খাপ মিলিয়ে দেয়া গেছে। আইনস্টাইন তখন নিজেই রীতিমত এক তারকা। আইনস্টাইন চাইলে এ সময় একটু সাহসী হতে পারতেন। তার তত্ত্ব থেকেই কিন্তু বেরিয়ে আসতে শুরু করেছিল যে আমাদের মহাবিশ্ব ক্রমশ প্রসারিত হচ্ছে, মানে আকাশের যাবতীয় গ্রহ নক্ষত্র তারকা, গ্যালাক্সিরা সব একে অন্য থেকে দূরে সরে যাচ্ছে। কিন্তু আইনস্টাইন নিজেই সেটা বুঝতে পারলেন না। বুঝতে পারলেন না বলাটা বোধ হয় ঠিক হল না। বলা উচিৎ মানতে চাইলেন না। মাধ্যাকর্ষণের প্রভাবে গ্যালাক্সিগুলোর একে অন্যের উপর হুমড়ি খেয়ে পড়ার হাত থেকে রক্ষা করার জন্য তিনি তার গাণিতিক সমীকরণে একটা কাল্পনিক ধ্রুবক যোগ করে দিলেন। তিনি ভেবেছিলেন এতে করে মহাবিশ্ব চুপসে যাওয়ার হাত থেকে রক্ষা পেয়ে ভারসাম্য বা স্থিতাবস্থা প্রাপ্ত হবে। এটাই সেই বিখ্যাত ‘মহাজাগিতিক ধ্রুবক’, গ্রীক অক্ষর ল্যামডা দিয়ে নাম করে স্থিতিশীল মহাবিশ্বের মডেলের প্রতি আস্থা স্থাপন করেছিলেন আইনস্টাইন। এই ধরণের মহাবিশ্ব সংকুচিতও হয় না প্রসারিতও হয় না। সে সময় অধিকাংশ পদার্থবিজ্ঞানীরাই মহাবিশ্বকে এভাবে দেখতেন। কিন্তু সবাই দেখলেই আইনস্টাইনকে দেখতে হবে কেন? বহুক্ষেত্রেই তো চিন্তায় চেতনায় তিনি বিপ্লবী। নিউটনের চীরচেনা পরম মহাবিশ্বের ধারণাকে প্রত্যাখ্যান করে বানিয়েছিলেন আপেক্ষিকতার এক নতুন জগৎ। অথচ মহাবিশ্বের প্রসারণের বেলায় তিনি ঝাঁকের কই হয়েই রইলেন কেন যেন। এর প্রায় বারো বছর পর আমেরিকান জ্যোতির্পদার্থবিজ্ঞানী এডউইন হাবল যখন টেলিস্কোপের সাহায্যে চাক্ষুষ প্রমাণ হাজির করলেন, দেখিয়ে দিলেন যে, মহাবিশ্ব স্থিতিশীল মোটেই নয়, বরং সত্যই প্রসারিত হচ্ছে, তখন আইনস্টাইন মুখ কাচুমাচু করে স্বীকার করে নিলেন যে, সমীকরণের মধ্যে মহাকর্ষীয় ধ্রুবক বসানোটা ‘জীবনের সবচেয়ে বড় ভুল’ ছিল। যে আইনস্টাইন সবসময়ই স্থবিরতাকে চ্যালেঞ্জ করেছন সারা জীবন ধরে, সেখানে তিনি কেন স্থবির মহাবিশ্বকে সত্য বলে ভেবে নিয়েছিনে তা আমাদের রীতিমত বিস্মিত করে। বিস্মিত করেছিল প্রিন্সটন বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের এমিরিটাস অধ্যাপক জেমস পিবলসকেও। তিনি বলেন, ‘স্ট্যাটিক মহাবিশ্ব তো কাঠামোগতভাবেই স্বসঙ্গতিপূর্ণ নয়। সূর্য তো সারা জীবন ধরে জ্বলে থাকতে পারে না। এ ব্যাপারটা আইনস্টাইন বুঝতে পারেননি, এটা আমাকে অবাক করে দেয়, এখনো’। অবশ্য কে তখন জানতো আইনস্টাইনের ভুল তো আর যে সে ভুল নয়! তার সমীকরণে যে মহাকর্ষীয় ধ্রুবকের আমদানীকে ‘জীবনের সবচেয়ে বড় ভুল’ বলে আখ্যায়িত করেছিলেন তিনি নিজে, সেই ভুলই আবার সিন্দাবাদের ভুতের মতো কাঁধে সওয়ার হয়ে ফিরে এসেছে নতুন উদ্যমে আধুনিক জ্যোতির্বিজ্ঞানে।
- After the “Big Bang”, the force of gravity began to affect the matter shooting outward in every direction. এখানে আরেকটি ভূল ধারণা হচ্ছে, আমরা সিঙ্গুলারিটি বলতে বুঝি খুব ছোট একটি আগুনের বলকে যার আবির্ভাব ঘটেছিল মহাশূণ্যের কোন এক স্থানে। কিন্তু অনেক বিশেষজ্ঞের ধারণা অনুযায়ী, বিগ ব্যাং এর পূর্বে মহাশূণ্য বলতে কিছুই ছিল না। ১৯৬০ কি ‘৭০ সালে মানুষ যখন প্রথম চাঁদে পা রাখল, তখন তিন পদার্থ ও জৌতির্বিদ স্টেফিন হকিং, জর্জ এলিস ও রোজার পেনরোজ তাদের মনযোগ ফেললেন রিলেটিভিটির তত্বের উপর এবং এর মূল কারণ হচ্ছে সময় সম্বন্ধে আমাদের ধারণা। ১৯৬৮ ও ১৯৭০ সালের মধ্যে তারা কিছু কাগজ প্রকাশ করলেন যাতে তাদের সময় ও স্থান নিয়ে কিছু পরীক্ষার ফলাফলসহ আইনস্টাইনের জেনারেল থিওরী অব রিলেটিভিটির বিস্তারিত বিবরণ ছিল। তাদের ফলাফল অনুযায়ী, পদার্থ ও শক্তির মত সময় ও স্থানেরও একটি নিদিষ্ট সূচনা ছিল। এখানে সিঙ্গুলারিটি মহাশূণ্যের ভেতর নয়, বরং মহাশূণ্যের উত্পত্তিই সিঙ্গুলারিটির ভেতর হয়েছিল। সিঙ্গুলারিটির পূর্বে কোন কিছুরই অস্তিত্ব ছিলনা। মহাশূণ্য, সময়, পদার্থ বা শক্তি কিছুই ছিলনা। তাই মনে প্রশ্ন জাগতে পারে, তাহলে কোথায় থেকে বা কিসের মধ্যে থেকে সিঙ্গুলারিটির উত্পত্তি হয়েছে? আমরা জানিনা, আমরা জানিনা কোথায় থেকে এটা এসেছে বা এটা কোথায় ছিল। আসলে সিঙ্গুলারিটি সম্বন্ধে আমরা যা জানি তা হচ্ছে আমরা এর মধ্যে আছি এবং একসময় সিঙ্গুলারিটি বলতে কিছুই ছিল না এমনকি আমরাও না।
- বিগ ব্যাং থিওরী নিয়ে আমাদের অনেক ভুল ধারণা প্রচলিত আছে। উদাহরণস্বরূপ, আমরা বিগ ব্যাং বলতে একটা বৃহত্ বিস্ফোরণের কথা ভাবি। কিন্তু বিশেষজ্ঞরা বলেন, তখন বিস্ফোরণ বলতে কিছুই হয়নি, তখন হয়েছিল (লাগাতার) সম্প্রসারণ। বিষয়টি আরোও সহজ হবে যদি আমরা একটি ফুলন্ত বেলুনের কথা চিন্তা করি। কল্পনা করুন একটি ছোট চুপসে যাওয়া বেলুন ধীরে ধীরে ফুলে উঠছে। তাহলে আমরা দেখতে পাবো যে, এর উপর যে রঙের ছোপগুলো আছে সেগুলোও সম্প্রসারিত হচ্ছে। আর এইগুলোই হচ্ছে বিভিন্ন গ্যালাক্সি এবং বেলুনটি হচ্ছে আমাদের মহাবিশ্ব যেটা এখনো সম্প্রসারিত হচ্ছে।
- সৃষ্টির প্রাথমিককালে মহাবিশ্ব সুষম এবং সমতাপীয় রূপে একটিই অতি উচ্চ শক্তি ঘনত্ব এবং উচ্চ তাপমাত্রা ও চাপবিশিষ্ট পদার্থ দ্বারা পূর্ণ ছিল। মহাবিশ্ব সৃষ্টির ১০−৪৩ সেকেন্ড পর পদার্থবিজ্ঞানের সূত্রগুলো কার্যকারিতা লাভ করে। তাই এই সময়কে প্ল্যাংকের সময় বলা হয়। প্ল্যাংকের সময়ের প্রায় ১০−৩৫ সেকেন্ড পর একটি দশা পরিবর্তন তথা অবস্থান্তর অবস্থার সূচনা ঘটে যার ফলে মহাজাগতিক স্ফীতি শুরু হয়। এই সময় মহাবিশ্ব সম্প্রসারিত হতে শুরু করে। এ সময় থেকে মূলত মহাবিশ্বের exponential সম্প্রসারণ শুরু হয়। বিগ ব্যাং থেকে সবকিছুর শুরু বলে আমরা জানি। কিন্তু মহাবিস্ফোরণের পর মুহূর্তে হাইড্রোজেন, হিলিয়াম কিংবা লিথিয়ামের মত মৌল তৈরি হলেও কার্বন, নাইট্রোজেন, অক্সিজেন এবং লৌহ কিন্তু সে সময় তৈরি হয়নি। এগুলো তৈরি হয়েছে অনেক অনেক পরে কোন না কোন নাক্ষত্রিক বিস্ফোরণ থেকে, যাদের আমরা মহাকাশে সুপারনোভা বলে জানি। বিজ্ঞানীরা গণনা করে দেখেছেন, প্রথম নক্ষত্র তৈরি হয়েছিল বিগ ব্যাং ঘটার অন্তত ৭৫ কোটি বছর পরে। আর তারকার বিস্ফোরণ – মানে সুপারনোভার মত ব্যাপার স্যাপার ঘটতে সময় লেগেছিল আরো অনেক।

- আজকের দিনে আমরা চারটি মৌলিক বলের কথা শুনতে পাই। সেগুলো হলো – সবল নিউক্লিয় বল, দুর্বল নিউক্লিয় বল, তাড়িতচৌম্বক বল এবং মাধ্যাকর্ষণ বল। বিজ্ঞানীদের ধারনা এই চারটি বল ‘সুপার ফোর্স’ বা অতিবল হিসেবে একসাথে মিশে ছিল। সে ভাবেই ছিল তারা মহাবিস্ফোরণের ঊষালগ্ন থেকে শুরু করে ১০-৪৩ সেকেন্ড পর্যন্ত। প্রথম এক সেকেন্ডেও মহাবিশ্ব ছিল যেন জ্বলন্ত এক নিউক্লিয় চুল্লি। তাপমাত্রা ছিল একশ কোটি ডিগ্রি সেন্টিগ্রেডের চেয়েও বেশি। সেসময় কোন চেনা জানা কণা ছিল না, চারদিক পূর্ণ ছিল কেবল প্লাজমার ধোঁয়াশায়। এক সেকেন্ড পরে কোয়ার্ক, ইলেকট্রন, প্রোটন ও নিউট্রনের মত মৌলিক কণিকাগুলি তৈরি হয়। তিন সেকেন্ড পরে প্রোটন আর নিউট্রন মিলে তৈরি হল নিউক্লিয়াস, এর পরে যথাক্রমে হাইড্রোজেন, হিলিয়াম, লিথিয়াম। তবে মহাবিশ্বের উদ্ভবের প্রায় কয়েক লক্ষ বছর পর্যন্ত আমরা যাকে জড়পদার্থ বা ম্যাটার বলি সেরকম কিছুই তৈরি হয় নি।

- আমাদের চিরচেনা মহাবিশ্ব এলো কোথা থেকে? এই প্রশ্ন কেউ করলে আমরা চোখ বুজে বলে দিই – কোত্থেকে আবার, ‘বিগ ব্যাং’ থেকে – বাংলায় আমরা যাকে ‘মহাবিস্ফোরণ’ নামে ডাকি। কিন্তু আশির দশকে ‘ইনফ্লেশন’ বা স্ফীতি নিয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কিছু কাজের কথা জানার পর থেকে কিন্তু বিজ্ঞানীরা এরকম উত্তর আর পছন্দ করছেন না। মহাবিশ্বের উদ্ভব বিগ ব্যাং বা মহাবিস্ফোরণ থেকে হয়েছে – এভাবে বললে হয়তো বলাই যায়, কিন্তু বিস্ফোরণের প্রকৃতি সম্বন্ধে আমরা কোন ধারণাই পাই না এ থেকে। অ্যালেন গুথের ভাষায়, ‘কী এই বিস্ফোরণ, কীভাবে এই বিস্ফোরণ, আর কেনই বা এই বিস্ফোরণ?' আর বিগ ব্যাং-এর এর আগে কি ছিল এ ধরণের প্রশ্ন কিছুদিন আগেও বিজ্ঞানে দেখা হত ‘ব্লাসফেমি’ হিসেবে। আমরা আমাদের পরিচিত মহাবিশ্বে যে স্থান কালের ধারণার সাথে পরিচিত, সেই স্থান ও কালের ধারণাও আসলে এসেছে এই মহাবিস্ফোরণ ঘটবার পর-মুহূর্ত থেকেই। কাজেই মহাবিস্ফোরণ ঘটার মুহূর্তে কিংবা পূর্বে কি ছিল- এ প্রশ্ন বিজ্ঞানের দৃষ্টিতে একেবারেই অর্থহীন। কিন্তু অর্থহীন বলে সবাই এড়িয়ে গেলেও ‘ক্যারা মাথা’র কেউ কেউ থাকেন দুনিয়ায়, যারা ‘মান্য করে ধন্য’ হবার নন। তারা গড্ডালিকা প্রবাহে গা ভাসিয়ে দেন না। নাফরমানি চিন্তা করতেই থাকেন অনবরত। এমনি একজন নাফরমান বিজ্ঞানী অ্যালেন গুথ। মহাবিশ্বের উদ্ভব বিষয়ক আধুনিক যে কোন বইয়ে কিংবা যে কোন পেপারে গুথের কাজের উল্লেখ না থাকলেই নয়। প্রমিত মহাবিস্ফোরণ তত্ত্বকে এর সাথে জুড়ে দিয়ে তত্ত্বটিকে এখন ‘ইনফ্লেশনারি বিগ ব্যাং মডেল’ হিসেবেও ডাকা হয়। এততুকুর জন্য গুথকে চিন্তা করতে হয়েছিল এক ধরণের অস্থায়ী ভ্যাকুয়াম বা শূন্যতার, যার নাম দিয়েছিলেন তিনি ‘ফল্স্ ভ্যাকুয়াম’।
