UPU Postal Payment Vision and Strategy
• Access to efficient, reliable, secure and affordable electronic
postal payment services (660,000 post offices)

network (WEPPN) to all Posts and other financial services

UPU-IFAD Project (2008/2010) - West Africa Region (I)
Creation of electronic remittance services in rural areas
• Target 6 countries:
– Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali,
Mauritania, Niger and
Senegal.
• Equipment purchased, installed
and tested in rural post offices.
• Connection of 355 post offices to
the UPU's worldwide electronic
postal payment network (WEPN).

Creation of electronic remittance services in rural areas
• Secure postal procedures
implemented in rural areas for
the payment of Money Orders
• Accounting and cash
management procedures set up
• + 17 corridors opened
• Traffic in 2010 increased by
104% compared with 2009.
• Tariffs reduced by 30 to 50%
Inhabitants of rural areas in West Africa can now
receive and send money to their family
members, without the need to travel to remote
large towns.
