2. Sumba - Not Bali!
• Sumba, is just a
nearby island
• just few small islands
next to Bali when you
go to the east direction
from Java
3. What is PASOLA?
•
Pasola means wooden spears
•
A continuation of people of
western Sumba’s tradition
towards the rice planting season
•
Rice planting seasons normally
take between February and
March when the full moon exists
•
But full moon is not the only sign
•
Nyale-another tradition event
prior Pasole-is the key to the
process
4. Nyale
tradition of sea worm
picking on the
surrounding beaches in
the morning during the
season (February March) when decided by
their Ratos (Marapu
religious elders)

5. Pasola
Pasola itself is some kind
of blood shed sacrifice
tradition in their Marapu
religion to fertilize the
land for their rice planting
season
6. Pasola
• two groups of knights
from different tribes will
ride their horse in the
open wide land, face one
and another, carrying
their Pasola
• For then they will yell
PA’SOLA, and ride their
horse and once they get
near their opponent, they
will skillfully throw their
Pasola towards their
opponent
7. Pasola
Bloodshed in this event is
believed will fertilize the
land. It’s the way the
respect their religion and
ancestors.
