- David by Donatello is a youthful victorious type of David. Donatello’s sculpture depicts youth of David. He is so young that his muscles have barely developed. His evidently calm face shows a small smile of contentment.
- The absurdly large sword in David’s hand shows that he defeated the foe not through his physical prowess but by the power of God. Thus making that victory as God’s rather than men’s.
- An expression of victory is depictive by raising his left foot above the head of giant Goliath.
- David’s posture of confidence was shown by putting his left hand on his waist with its right hand holding the sword conveying that David defeated Goliath effortlessly. It also portrayed intelligence and liberty, triumphant over tyranny and cruelty.
- Moreover, David’s wearing of boots and shepherd’s hat with laurel leaves on top of it expresses the humility of the boy with innocence and victorious life. Given that victory, it lends a message that humbleness should remain in whatever victory one can achieve.
- Also, David’s perfectly shaped butt was elaborated by thrusting his right hip slightly outward and his left hand on left hip.
- This marble David of Donatello also shows graceful and effeminate bearing. Looking at it for the first time, one can say that the sculpture is in a stance of undeniable femininity. This idea is supported by the sculpture’s decorative hat and curly flowing hair. Donatello chose to present David in a feminine way probably because he wanted to show that women can be equally as strong as men not only in the aspect of physicality but with the strong sense of character.
- Its position, though expressing perfect balance, alludes at movement, with its left heel raised off the ground. Behind the apparent equilibrium, his David represses strong energy and tension.
- It is evident that his David is depicted patiently waiting for a battle, prepped with slingshot in one hand (left) and stone on the other (right).
- Looking closer on the hand, one will notice that the veins are visible in his arms and hand as he clutches the stones with one hand and the slingshot in the other.
- David’s eye seems focusing on something from a distance. It somehow shows us a figure who is somewhat focusing on the future. The attitude is said to be strong and filled with inner life.
- The uncircumcised male organ of Michelangelo’s David somehow tells us that circumcision is not that common during their time.
- On the left side, God was depicted as an elderly white-bearded man surrounded by angels and wrapped in a swirling red cloak
- while Adam on the lower left part was completely nude.
- God’s right arm was outstretched pointing Adam as he imparts the spark of life with His own finger, and Adam extending his left arm, a pose mirroring God’s, to receive it. This is a reminder that man is made in the image or likeness of God.
- One can notice that both fingers of God and Adam did not touch. It signifies that God, the giver of life, is reaching out to Adam who has yet to receive it. Man and God is not at the same level, that God has divinity which humans do not have.
- Also, Adam was lying on a green and blue background, which obviously signifies that he is on earth already.
- The woman and child on God’s left are of special interest because God’s hand wraps around the woman and touches the child.
- Looking the background of God as a whole, one can notice that it accurately forms a human brain. Upon observing the angels, it is identified that he sad angel is found on the part of the brain that when it is scanned, that precise area of the brain would be activated when someone experiences sadness.
