Beste Partners, Welkom op het 5de brokerage event, nu voor de tweede maal in het ICC in Gent. Ik ben blij dat we opnieuw met meer dan 500 zijn om van gedachten te wisselen over onze gezamenlijke onderzoeksresultaten en contacten te leggen of te hernieuwen. U herinnert zich misschien dat vorig jaar de electriciteit was uitgevallen. Dit jaar is er echter nog iets erger gebeurd. Kijk zelf maar

Daarnet zag U beelden van het We-BBT event, onze jaarlijkse bijeenkomst van IBBT onderzoekers, die dit jaar brainstormden over potentiele nieuwe activiteiten binnen de organisatie. De beelden geven een goed idee van hoe wij onze missie invullen, met name hoog-competent menselijk kapitaal vormen binnen de sector van ICT.

In order to create a world-class organization or company you need to attract and nurture the best, reward excellence and be ambitious. Our university education is good but incomplete. This week-end I watched one of those wonderful BBC nature documentaries and saw this fragment. I will let you enjoy it. Through initiaves as i-Ventures and i-Bootcamp we are helping people with good ideas understand what it takes to become an entrepreneur and make the jump. In my opinion, next to superior intelligence which I assume you all have, you need three things: some idea that you are convinced will change the world (even in a small way), role-models that inspire you to go for it as well and guts. And it can be done. Just to make my point, I took three cases from this city, in various stages of development.
The above goals can only be met when efforts by IBBT are coordinated within a more general policy. The most important condition is a clear set of government policies that stimulate individuals and companies to undertake these initiatives and a good venture capital climate to finance them IBBT will continue to work with the relevant other actors to implement such a strategy and policy
We have invested in the previous year in state-of-the art technical infrastructure. We are especially proud of our virtual wall, a unique infrastructure for large-scale simulation and testing in Europe, and our upcoming sensor testing environment. We also made some serious investments in image processing technology. I am happy to announce we will officially open ilab.t June 25th in the presence of Minister Ceyssens and I hope to see many of you there. It is a perfect occassion to get acquainted with the available technology and the way it is being used in research.
Open innovation is still the buzzword in research circles and we believe we have some experience at IBBT at trying to put it into practice. One need we identified was the need for sound expertise in methodologies to support open innovation. That is why we started ilab.o, a team of experts in Brussels that focus on this issue. One particular area they have built expertise is the area of living labs and testbeds.

De cijfers spreken voor zich. Na de uitbreiding met beeldverwerking, omvat IBBT nu 16 groepen uit verschillende disciplines. In totaal werken binnen deze groepen ongeveer 850 onderzoekers die instonden voor meer dan 700 wetenschappelijke publicaties, gerelateerd aan hun onderzoekswerk in het kader van IBBT. Multidisciplinair is het IBBT zeker: bijna 700 van onze onderzoekers behoren tot de technische groepen maar er zijn er ook 150 actief binnen de zogenaamde gebruikersgroepen. In onze projecten werken we bovendien samen met medici, kunstenaars en andere disciplines uit onze partners. Deze onderzoekers en hun inzet in onze projecten zijn het fundament van ons succes en ik zou ze dan ook willen bedanken voor de geleverde inspanningen van de laatste jaren.
