Next genits leaflet en 2008
1. NextGenITS
The NextGenITS project reflects the intention of some of the most prominent players in the Belgian
ICT sector to cooperate with research institutes and governments to develop and demonstrate a
number of ITS services (ITS: Intelligent Transport Services) which have either or both a big social and
commercial potential.
1. Traffic information
Research will be done leading to a demonstrator
implementation for the distribution of rich traffic content
in Flanders.
2. eCall
eCall – the notification of the rescue services in case of an
accident, is a service that will lead to more timely and
better prepared interventions in case of accidents. The innovation objective of the eCall subproject is
to create a framework that will allow private sector eCall service providers to introduce the service
on the market and to agree with public services (the Federal Police) under what conditions eCall
messages can be fed directly into the public emergency network.
3. Intelligent Speed Adaption (ISA)
The aim of ISA subproject is twofold:
• to provide an accurate technical and organizational (public-private cooperation) framework
for a speed limit database in Flanders and
• to develop strategies for optimal communication of these speed limits from server to
vehicle.
4. Road Charging
The road charging subproject will develop a demonstrator for GSM / GPS based (private car) road
tolling. The major task will be the development of an on-board unit based on a single chip
integrating GPS, GSM & identification features.
2. 5. Cooperative Vehicle Systems
The cooperative systems subproject will conduct
research on a suitable communication platform for
vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-
infrastructure (V2I) applications. Focus will be on
potential use of the CALM platform (802.11, 2G/3G
and IR interfaces).
6. Multi-application platforms
The multi-application platform subproject represents the biggest innovative challenge in the
NextGenITS project. Research will be done towards a common technology architecture which can
support the different applications developed in this project, taking into account existing European
standards and non-technical issues (privacy, business models).
