DISTRIBUTED DATA FUSION FOR MULTIROBOT SEARCH
ABSTRACT
This paper presents novel data fusion methods that enable teams of vehicles to perform
target search tasks without guaranteed communication. Techniques are introduced for merging
estimates of a target’s position from vehicles that regain contact after long periods of time, and a
fully distributed team-planning algorithm is proposed, which utilizes limited shared information
as it becomes available. The proposed data fusion techniques are shown to avoid overcounting
information, which ensures that combining data from different vehicles will not decrease the
performance of the search.Motivated by the underwater search domain, a realistic underwater
acoustic communication channel is used to determine the probability of successful data transfer
between two locations. The channel model is integrated into a simulation of multiple
autonomous vehicles in both open water and harbor environments. The results demonstrate that
the proposed distributed coordination techniques provide performance competitive with full
communication.

The world of transportation is radically changing. It is an industry with immense technological challenges, most of which are AI related. In the current paste and major active industry players, it will become unrecognisable in following years. In this talk I aim to cover the different fields that it includes, data science related problems that it poses, and current state of the art solutions. The focus of this talk will be smart cities, which multiple teams @Google work on, including mine and myself. I will present my own work, including hotspot analysis, trajectory tracking (using a novel clustering method) using GPS and beacon data (patent pending), vehicle identification (classification and clustering), ETA and routing optimisation and personalisation (regression and ranking), drivers and riders matching (ranking and classification) and city planning. I will also cover but not focus other smart city topics research and solutions by my counterparts on other Google teams and in Uber like autonomous vehicles (not a focus here, it is already too popular and crowded and appears in too many talks), fleet coordination (in a multi agent system), load distribution (reinforcement based), and vehicle syncing. I will describe problems and solutions including the algorithm / model that is most currently used in the industry to solve such problems. On specific example, which I have personally researched I will go into more detail, including research phases, algorithm inner working and experiment results (usually A/B testing) on real user data. This talk will give the audience an understanding of the tremendous challenges faced when trying to improve the state of transportation, and how we solve and plan on solving them to make the world a better place. It will also give participants a rare glimpse to some of Google's and Waze's ideas, algorithm, research methodologies and future plans for global transportation. From personal experience of giving talks on transportation / Waze algorithms (never this one before) I have learnt that this is an "emotional" subject for many people, therefore very exciting to audience and full of questions. Note that this talk is very different from the one presented last year which was covering multiple fields Waze operates on (e.g. Ads, usage, conversion, behavioural analytics, etc.). This talk would focus only transportation, current state and future which focus on how data science is crucial and the leading field in solving many of these problems.

Good characterization of traffic interactions among urban roads can facilitate traffic-related applications, such as traffic control and short-term forecasting. Most studies measure the traffic interaction between two roads by their topological distance or the correlation between their traffic variables. However, the distance-based methods neglect the spatial heterogeneity of roads’ traffic interactions, while the correlation-based methods cannot capture the non-linear dependency between two roads’ traffic variables. In this work, we propose a novel approach called Road2Vec to quantify the implicit traffic interactions among roads based on large-scale taxi operating route data using a Word2Vec model from the natural language processing (NLP) field. A case study on short-term traffic forecasting is conducted with artificial neural network (ANN) and support vector machine (SVM) algorithms to validate the advantages of the presented method. The results show that the forecasting achieves a higher accuracy with the support of the Road2Vec method than with the topological distance and traffic correlation based methods.

In recent years, a new wireless network called vehicular ad-hoc network (VANET), has become a popular research topic. VANET allows communication among vehicles and with roadside units by providing information to each other, such as vehicle velocity, location and direction. In general, when many vehicles likely to use the common route to proceed to the same destination, it can lead to a congested route that should be avoided. It may be better if vehicles are able to predict accurately the traffic congestion and then avoid it. Therefore, in this work, the deep reinforcement learning in VANET to enhance the ability to predict traffic congestion on the roads is proposed. Furthermore, different types of neural networks namely Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) are investigated and compared in this deep reinforcement learning model to discover the most effective one. Our proposed method is tested by simulation. The traffic scenarios are created using traffic simulator called Simulation of Urban Mobility (SUMO) before integrating with deep reinforcement learning model. The simulation procedures, as well as the programming used, are described in detail. The performance of our proposed method is evaluated using two metrics; the average travelling time delay and average waiting time delay of vehicles. According to the simulation results, the average travelling time delay and average waiting time delay are gradually improved over the multiple runs, since our proposed method receives feedback from the environment. In addition, the results without and with three different deep learning algorithms, i.e., CNN, MLP and LSTM are compared. It is obvious that the deep reinforcement learning model works effectively when traffic density is neither too high nor too low. In addition, it can be concluded that the effective algorithms for traffic congestion prediction models in descending order are MLP, CNN, and LSTM, respectively.

In VANET, the emphasis is given on the exchange of traffic information and road conditions between the vehicles and thereby preventing the accidents. Distinctive characteristics of VANET like restricted topology, unpredictable mobility, vehicle density, varying channel capacity, etc. make VANET environment exciting for developing efficient routing protocols. Owing to the dynamic topology in VANET, the routes are unstable and unreliable for exchange of information among the vehicles. To enrich the performance and throughput of the VANETs, the links between nodes must be reliable and stable. In order to tackle the relaiblity and stability of information communication this work proposes ‘Multi-agent system for Secured and Reliable Routing (MSRR) in VANET. The performance of the proposed scheme is tested in terms of packet delivery ratio, route reliability, route discovery time and delay.

In the method, the target geographical region is divided into areas, and each car measures time to pass through each area. Traffic information is collected by exchanging information between cars using inter-vehicle communication. In order to improve accuracy of estimation, we introduce several mechanisms to avoid same data to be repeatedly counted. Since wireless bandwidth usable for exchanging statistics information is limited, the proposed method includes a mechanism to categorize data, and send important data prior to other data. In order to evaluate effectiveness of the proposed method, we implemented the method on a traffic simulator NETSTREAM developed by Toyota Central R&D Labs, conducted some experiments and confirmed that the method achieves practical performance in sharing traffic jam information using inter-vehicle communication.

Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) have seen tremendous growth in the last decade, providing a vast range of applications in both military and civilian activities. The temporary connectivity in the vehicles can also increase the driver’s capability on the road. However, such applications require heavy data packets to be shared on the same spectrum without the requirement of excessive radios. Thus, e-client approaches are required which can provide improved data dissemination along with the better quality of services to allow heavy traffic to be easily shared between the vehicles. In this paper, an e-client data dissemination approach is proposed which not only improves the vehicle to vehicle connectivity but also improves the QoS between the source and the destination. The proposed approach is analyzed and compared with the existing state-of-the-art approaches. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated in terms of the significant gains attained in the parameters namely, end to end delay, packet delivery ratio, route acquisition time, throughput, and message dissemination rate in comparison with the existing approaches.

Route path identification on the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) is complicated due to the nature of high dynamic mobility, bandwidth constraints, and traffic load. A vehicle present on the IoV communicates with each other to find the status of the road and location of other vehicles for reliable data transmission. However, the existing routing algorithm does not effectively improve the packet delivery ratio and reduce the delay. To resolve these issues, A Quantile Regressive Fish Swarm Optimized Deep Convolutional Neural Learning (QRFSODCNL) technique is introduced reliable data transmission with minimum end to end delay in IoV. The Vehicular Ad-hoc Network is a novel technology. It has the property of higher node mobility. Vehicular Adhoc networks offer wireless communications between vehicles themselves (V2V) and between vehicles to the roadside units (V2R). The VANET is an active research area, as it has great prospective to enhance the road and vehicle safety, efficiency of traffic. Vehicular Ad-hoc Network not only just provides the safety applications, but also provides communication to the users. The QoS support in VANET is a challenge when the existing routing paths become no longer are available as a result of changes in the velocity and position of node, and distance between the vehicular nodes or network topology. In this study we designed a framework which provides us the facility to enhance various Quality of Service parameters, such as End to End Delay, throughput and packet loss ratio etc. The proposed model uses layered approach, deep classification as existed QoS components are further broken down and provides Quality of Experience to the users. NCTUns is used as simulation tool to build up simulations. After getting the results of simulation we carried out the performance analysis of various routing protocols. The simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme provides much better performance in terms of various QoS parameters like End to End Delay, throughput and packet loss ratio

Considerable attention has recently been given to the routing issue in vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANET). Indeed, the repetitive communication failures and high velocity of vehicles reduce the efficacy of routing protocols in VANET. The clustering technique is considered an important solution to overcome these difficulties. In this paper, an efficient clustering approach using an adapted k-means algorithm for VANET has been introduced to enhance network stability in a highway environment. Our approach relies on a clustering scheme that accounts for the network characteristics and the number of connected vehicles. The simulation indicates that the proposed approach is more efficient than similar schemes. The results obtained appear an overall increase in constancy, proven by an increase in cluster head lifetime by 66%, and an improvement in robustness clear in the overall reduction of the end-to-end delay by 46% as well as an increase in throughput by 74%.
