**The Product Data Sheets (PDS) or TDS have been downloaded from the public domain Shell Australia website
and is intended exclusively for study/comparison of typical offerings from a World leader in the Lubricants
domain. In many cases/applications Shell Lubricants are benchmarked by OEM’s, hence a product knowledge of
Shell Lubricant products would be useful for Lubricant marketers and Lubricant users across the world. The
Introduction
I'm passionate about the field of Tribology- the study of friction, wear, lubrication, and
Lubricants. My tryst with the field started with a 3-month training at the CIL Lube Plant at
Tondiarpet, Chennai, India.(1983 Dec ). Under BP’s optimisation plans, the plant has since
been closed down.
I was initiated into Technical Sales of Castrol brand of lubricants by Deepak Keshav Gore,
H Meenakshi Sundaram and Arunkumar Rau ; and was handed an equivalent chart to refer
when recommending Castrol grade, against the grade of lubricant in use. I was curious as
to how an equivalent chart was made. To understand this better, I started collecting
competitor equivalent charts and Product Data Sheets from across the industry, by
diligently building, a data base of IOC, HPCL, BPCL, Shell, Mobil, Gulf, Veedol, Product
Data Sheets (PDS) and Technical Data Sheets (TDS).
My first target was nomenclature of Lubricants. The multiple digit viscosity references,
which were used as a suffix often led to ambiguity in the early 80’s. However, the
introduction of ISO VG 3448 was a boon, as it cleared the ambiguity and made it easier to
recommend equivalents, by studying the lubricant manufacturers' family/brand name, its
ISO VG viscosity and by doing research on the PDS and TDS.
My hobby of collecting competitors TDS/PDS continued and with the advent of the Digital
world of things, TDS/PDS could be accessed from the world wide web. I felt there was a
need to share the huge collection of Lubricant TDS/PDS and create an online hub
that has a “-Lubricant TDS - Repository.” The objective of the exercise is to
string together all the TDS/PDS from all over the web, into one place. There is
no intent to violate or infringe any copyrights. To embark on this project, I chose
Shell, as it is the largest brand, with thousands of OEM recommendations. I have
downloaded the Sector wise brochure and in the process of downloading the TDS/PDS.
This compendium is the first compilation for the “ Lubricant TDS - Repository.”
God willing will be able to compile Ver 2,3 ( Castrol, ExxonMobil...). Access to
the Repository, will be available to all, in the Lubricants fraternity.

Lubricants are a limited resource and we need to conserve it
You may be surprised to know that a barrel of crude oil of 42 gallons,
after fractional distillation in a petroleum refinery, yields barely 1%
fraction ( or cut) that, is called Base Oil and which is useful for
manufacture of lubricating oils. As the diagram below shows, bulk of the
crude oil after distillation, results in fuels like gasoline, diesel, aviation
fuel, kerosene and heavy residual fuels (used in Captive Power Plants, or
in the maritime industry). Typically fuels, have high calorific value, hence
suitable for use as, fuel.
Against this background, that we need to conserve lubricants, in
storage, in transportation, in use and after use.

A range of air compressor oils
designed to meet your needs
To meet the challenges of a wide range of air compressors and
applications, Shell has designed a portfolio of oils that enables
you to choose a product to match your needs.
The Shell Corena range of air compressor oils has been developed
to enable equipment operators to select the oil designed to deliver
optimum value to their operations through enhanced wear protection,
long oil life and high system efficiency.
PERFORMANCE YOU CAN COUNT ON
Shell’s air compressor oils are developed in close
co-operation with customers and equipment makers.
The Shell Corena range is well known to equipment
makers, and its performance has been demonstrated
in real-life applications to help reduce the possibility
of your equipment letting you down.
Real-world value delivery
Users of Shell Corena oils across a wide range of industries are benefiting
from proven lubrication performance that adds value to their operations.
For instance, by switching to Shell Corena S4 R, some customers are
enhancing production and cutting maintenance costs by
n increasing oil-drain intervals by 100% compared with conventional oils
n extending equipment service life: one cement company is running its
compressors for three times longer between overhauls
n reducing the high operating temperatures caused by thickening of the
original oil, which prevented the oil valves from working efficiently.
wear protection
Excess wear can seriously compromise an air compressor’s life
and efficiency. The Shell Corena range includes dedicated rotary
compressor oils designed to control vane and screw wear, and
oils for reciprocating compressors specifically to help control
cylinder, piston-ring and valve wear.
Whatever your technical needs and operational conditions, there
is a Shell oil that is designed to help you get the most from your
equipment investment. The Shell Corena range includes the latest
synthetic oils for enhanced wear protection in high-temperature
conditions and for extended operations.
oil life
The longer an oil’s life, the less fluid maintenance your equipment
requires, so it can continue to operate with less interruption. The
Shell Corena range enables you to best match oil life to your
operational needs.
From mainstream oils for standard life applications to advanced
synthetic oils that can last for up to three years, the Shell Corena
range enables you to choose the right oil for your needs.
system efficiency
Pressure loss in worn compressors can reduce operational
efficiency and increase costs. Shell Corena oils are designed
to promote system efficiency by suppressing foaming, releasing
trapped air and rapidly separating out condensed water. The oils
are also developed to help to reduce wear, which helps to keep
your compressors working as their designers intended.
Every part of your machine or process has
been meticulously engineered, so you want to
be sure that you choose a lubricant that has
been designed to ensure that your equipment
is well protected and works efficiently.

WEAR PROTECTION
Lubrication systems for industrial equipment differ considerably
across industries in size, loading, operating conditions,
temperatures and exposure to contamination. But whatever your
application, bearings, gears and oil pumps must be well protected
from wear and corrosion for long machine life.
That is why Shell offers a range of bearing and circulating oils
ranging from robust, reliable products to fully synthetic products
fortified with extreme-pressure (EP) additives. There are also
speciality products designed to cope with hot, wet or dusty
environments, or high-precision operations.
OIL LIFE
The longer the oil life, the less fluid maintenance is required to help
your equipment to operate for longer without interruption. The Shell
Morlina range of bearing and circulating oils enables you to match
the oil life of the fluid to your operational needs. This includes the fully
synthetic Shell Morlina S4 B, which offers the longest oil life in the Shell
range under severe conditions, and speciality products that continue to
function even when very contaminated with water, dust or dirt.
SYSTEM EFFICIENCY
Efficient systems are characterised by their ability to operate at or
beyond their original design parameters. Consistent and reliable
lubrication, whatever the operating conditions, is key. As every

JUST LIKE OUR GAS-ENGINE
OILS – SHELL MYSELLA.
DESIGNED TO MEET CHALLENGES
The Shell Mysella range of gas-engine oils has been developed to
enable equipment operators to select the oil that will deliver optimum
value to their operations through enhanced wear protection, long oil
life and high system efficiency.
EVERY PART OF YOUR MACHINE OR PROCESS
HAS BEEN METICULOUSLY ENGINEERED, SO
YOU WANT TO BE SURE THAT YOU CHOOSE
A LUBRICANT THAT HAS BEEN DESIGNED TO
ENSURE THAT YOUR EQUIPMENT IS WELL
PROTECTED AND WORKS EFFICIENTLY.
THE SHELL MYSELLA RANGE OF GAS-ENGINE OILS HAS
BEEN DESIGNED TO MINIMISE DEPOSIT BUILD-UP AND
TO KEEP YOUR ENGINE CLEAN.
Real-world value delivery
The Shell Mysella range of gas-engine oils has been used
successfully throughout the world. A compressed natural
gas supplier, which uses more than 130 gas engines from
manufacturers such as Caterpillar and Waukesha to drive the
compressors at its compressed natural gas outlets across Delhi,
India, was very impressed by Shell Mysella S5 N. By switching
to this oil, the company
n increased the engines’ oil-drain interval from 850 to 1,100 hours
n reduced oil consumption
n increased filter life
n enhanced equipment availability.
As a result, the compressed natural gas supplier cut its annual
operating costs by over $84,0001
.
Shell Mysella S5 N – FOR EXTRA
PROTECTION AGAINST DEPOSITS
AND CORROSION
Shell Mysella S5 N is a premium-tier product
designed to meet the challenges posed by the latest
high brake mean effective pressure (BMEP) engines.
It offers an extremely long oil life to help extend
maintenance intervals, and offers excellent engine
protection. It is formulated to control deposits,
maintain ring belt cleanliness and protect the
cylinder liners, even under the high temperature and
high pressure conditions seen in modern engines.
wear protection
The Shell Mysella range of gas-engine oils is designed to
minimise deposit build-up and to keep your engine clean.
For instance, Shell Mysella S5 N provides superior deposit
control, even in the latest generation of high-output engines
that operate in very severe conditions with very high piston
temperatures and pressures. This helps to maintain excellent
ring belt cleanliness and cylinder liner protection.
oil life
Shell Mysella oils are designed to deliver long oil life to help
you maintain your operations efficiently and cost-effectively. For
instance, Shell Mysella S5 S can provide extended oil-drain
intervals in engines fuelled by sour gases such as biogas or
sewage gas. These gas types may contain high levels of
halogen compounds, which can rapidly reduce the oil life of
more traditional gas-engine lubricants.
system efficiency
The Shell Mysella range of gas-engine oils has been
designed to provide high engine efficiency. For instance,
Shell Mysella S5 N helps to provide excellent cleanliness for
heat recovery boilers, turbochargers and intercoolers.
EXTRA PROTECTION: Shell Mysella S3 N demonstrated excellent ring groove cleanliness (left) and left the
cylinder liner in an excellent condition (right) in a Wärtsilä 20V34SG engine after 16,000 hours of operation
without an oil change.
THE SOUR-GAS CHALLENGE
An increasing number of stationary gas engines are fuelled by
sour gases. Sour gases derive from the decomposition of matter
in, for example, landfill sites, biomass digesters and sewage.
These gases offer a unique set of challenges to the engine
operator: acids in the gas can cause corrosion and the rapid
reduction of oil life. In addition, siloxanes, which are commonly
found in landfill gases, can cause excessive deposit formation.
Shell has worked to understand the mechanisms behind these
problems and has developed Shell Mysella S5 S to offer a long-
life solution for engines fuelled by sour gases without increasing
the oil’s ash content.
A RANGE OF GAS-ENGINE OILS TO MEET YOUR NEEDS
To meet the challenges of a wide range of gas-engines and applications, Shell has
designed a portfolio of fluids that enable you to choose a product to match your
technical and operational needs.

Optimising oil life is central to Shell’s development of power-generation engine oils.
Shell Argina is available with a range of base numbers; correct product selection
and oil condition monitoring can help to optimise an operator’s cost of ownership.
Shell Mysella XL has set a new standard for oil life in modern high-efficiency gas
engines and has been categorised as a premium grade or long-drain-interval oil by
several engine manufacturers.
system efficiency
Engine efficiency is enhanced through the retention of factors such as component
cleanliness, consistent oil viscosity and efficient cooling – all Shell’s products are
designed with these in mind. Shell Gadinia AL has been shown to successfully help
reduce the formation of the liner lacquer that can result in high oil consumption and,
ultimately, piston seizure.

Real-world value delivery
The Shell range of stationary engine oils has brought
significant savings to operators. For instance, one power plant
reports saving $39,000¹ a year when it switched to Shell
Argina XL after suffering heavy soot and deposit build-ups in
its diesel engines.
Another power plant adopted Shell Mysella XL in an effort
to reduce high oil consumption, and reportedly saved
$23,400¹ a year through
n reduced downtime
n increased oil life
n longer oil-drain intervals.
¹	Savings reported by individual customers. Actual savings may vary, depending on the
application, the current oil used, the maintenance procedures and the condition of the
equipment.
A RANGE OF STATIONARY ENGINE OILS Designed to meet your needs
To meet the challenges of a wide range of applications, Shell has designed a portfolio of oils that helps
you to choose a product to best match your needs.
Shell Mysella XL – For significantly longer life
The longer the oil life, the less fluid maintenance is required to help
your equipment to operate for longer without interruption. Shell
Mysella XL has set a new standard for oil life in modern, high-
efficiency gas engines and has been categorised as a premium,
long-drain-interval oil by several engine manufacturers. By resisting
breakdown through oxidation and nitration, it has been shown to offer
significantly longer oil life in high-speed gas engines compared with
other gas-engine oils in the Shell range.

SHELL RISELLA X IS A RANGE OF TOP-TIER PROCESS
OILS BASED ON GTL TECHNOLOGY. IT OFFERS SEVERAL
ADVANTAGES OVER CONVENTIONAL PROCESS OILS,
INCLUDING EXTRA PURITY AND EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE
IN SELECTED APPLICATIONS.
It enables high-quality process oils that have a
more uniform chemical structure than those based
on crude oil (Figure 1) to be produced from
natural gas (Figure 2).
Moreover, the Shell Risella X range offers several
advantages over conventional process oils,
including
	extra purity
	excellent performance in selected
applications.
Shell Risella X oils are manufactured at Shell’s
new Pearl GTL plant in Qatar, which is the
culmination of some 35 years of research
and development. It is also the world’s largest
source of GTL products: It has a capacity of
260,000 barrels of oil equivalent a day and
produces diesel and aviation fuel, valuable
chemical feedstocks and premium base oils for
lubricants and process oils. Shell holds more
than 3,500 patents covering all stages of the
Pearl GTL process.

WORKING FOR YOU
SHELL GTL TECHNOLOGY OPENS EXCITING NEW OPPORTUNITIES
FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF PROCESS OILS.
THE BASIC TECHNOLOGY BEHIND THE GTL PROCESS, KNOWN AS
FISCHER–TROPSCH SYNTHESIS, WAS DEVELOPED BY GERMAN SCIENTISTS IN
THE 1920S AND HAS BEEN REFINED BY SHELL’S PROPRIETARY TECHNOLOGY.
WITH OVER 35 YEARS OF RESEARCH IN THIS FIELD, SHELL HAS BEEN AT
THE FOREFRONT OF GTL TECHNOLOGY AND PRODUCTION.

3 GASIFICATION:
The remaining pure natural gas
flows to the gasification unit, which
mixes it with oxygen and converts
it into a combination of hydrogen

UNDERSTANDING YOUR NEEDS
Shell is one of the leading process oil manufacturers
and has more than 25 years’ experience in the process
oils business. We recognise the crucial role that process
oils play in your products and operations. We also
understand that the quality of these vital oils is paramount,
and that using a process oil that has a highly consistent
quality can have a major bearing on the success of your
business.
The process oils market has seen a clear trend
towards the use of high-purity products in recent years.
Manufacturers in a range of sectors are increasingly
looking for process oils that have low concentrations of
	aromatics
	polycyclic aromatic structures
	sulphur
	nitrogen
	volatile components.
Lowering hydrocarbon emissions caused by process oils
in customers’ end products is also increasingly important,
along with the tendency to use process oils with a
brighter colour and increased colour stability.
Shell Risella X oils have been designed in response to
these challenges and could be game changers for
your products and operations.
Shell Risella X oils offer excellent performance in selected
applications because, in contrast to other process oils that are
derived from crude oil, they are made from pure synthesis gas;
therefore, they are mineral-oil free. This leads to final products with a
distinct molecular structure, which can provide the valuable features
and benefits shown below.
Extra purity
Shell Risella X oils contain a high proportion of paraffinic
hydrocarbons and are very pure, which provides qualities that are
key in many applications. For instance, they
	 are colourless
	 are almost odourless
contain virtually no sulphur, nitrogen or aromatics
have an extremely narrow hydrocarbon distribution range.
Excellent performance in selected applications
Shell Risella X oils are synthetic process oils offering an outstanding
combination of characteristics that can facilitate enhanced
performance in the applications in which they are used. These
properties include
	low volatility
	low pour point
	high flash point
	high viscosity index
outstanding UV and thermal colour stability.
Few other process oils can offer the same combination of properties.
SHELL RISELLA X OILS ARE HIGH-QUALITY TECHNICAL WHITE OILS THAT OFFER
VALUABLE PERFORMANCE ADVANTAGES.
GAME CHANGERS FOR YOUR

deliver exceptional wear, pitting, bearing-failure and
corrosion protection for heavy-duty axles, transmissions
and gears operating under highly stressed conditions.
This can help to reduce your costs.
LONGER OIL AND COMPONENT LIFE
The longer an oil goes on protecting its
components, the less maintenance your vehicle
requires, so it can continue to operate with less
interruption, which can reduce your maintenance
costs. The Shell Spirax range contains oils that are
designed to offer you value through exceptional
oil life and protection that enable oil-drain
intervals and component life to be extended.
For example, in industry-standard oxidation

  • 2. Introduction I'm passionate about the field of Tribology- the study of friction, wear, lubrication, and Lubricants. My tryst with the field started with a 3-month training at the CIL Lube Plant at Tondiarpet, Chennai, India.(1983 Dec ). Under BP’s optimisation plans, the plant has since been closed down. I was initiated into Technical Sales of Castrol brand of lubricants by Deepak Keshav Gore, H Meenakshi Sundaram and Arunkumar Rau ; and was handed an equivalent chart to refer when recommending Castrol grade, against the grade of lubricant in use. I was curious as to how an equivalent chart was made. To understand this better, I started collecting competitor equivalent charts and Product Data Sheets from across the industry, by diligently building, a data base of IOC, HPCL, BPCL, Shell, Mobil, Gulf, Veedol, Product Data Sheets (PDS) and Technical Data Sheets (TDS). My first target was nomenclature of Lubricants. The multiple digit viscosity references, which were used as a suffix often led to ambiguity in the early 80’s. However, the introduction of ISO VG 3448 was a boon, as it cleared the ambiguity and made it easier to recommend equivalents, by studying the lubricant manufacturers' family/brand name, its ISO VG viscosity and by doing research on the PDS and TDS. My hobby of collecting competitors TDS/PDS continued and with the advent of the Digital world of things, TDS/PDS could be accessed from the world wide web. I felt there was a need to share the huge collection of Lubricant TDS/PDS and create an online hub that has a “-Lubricant TDS - Repository.” The objective of the exercise is to string together all the TDS/PDS from all over the web, into one place. There is no intent to violate or infringe any copyrights. To embark on this project, I chose Shell, as it is the largest brand, with thousands of OEM recommendations. I have downloaded the Sector wise brochure and in the process of downloading the TDS/PDS. This compendium is the first compilation for the “ Lubricant TDS - Repository.” God willing will be able to compile Ver 2,3 ( Castrol, ExxonMobil...). Access to the Repository, will be available to all, in the Lubricants fraternity. • 3. Lubricants are a limited resource and we need to conserve it You may be surprised to know that a barrel of crude oil of 42 gallons, after fractional distillation in a petroleum refinery, yields barely 1% fraction ( or cut) that, is called Base Oil and which is useful for manufacture of lubricating oils. As the diagram below shows, bulk of the crude oil after distillation, results in fuels like gasoline, diesel, aviation fuel, kerosene and heavy residual fuels (used in Captive Power Plants, or in the maritime industry). Typically fuels, have high calorific value, hence suitable for use as, fuel. Against this background, that we need to conserve lubricants, in storage, in transportation, in use and after use.

  • 18. The Shell Mysella range of gas-engine oils has been developed to enable equipment operators to select the oil that will deliver optimum value to their operations through enhanced wear protection, long oil life and high system efficiency. EVERY PART OF YOUR MACHINE OR PROCESS HAS BEEN METICULOUSLY ENGINEERED, SO YOU WANT TO BE SURE THAT YOU CHOOSE A LUBRICANT THAT HAS BEEN DESIGNED TO ENSURE THAT YOUR EQUIPMENT IS WELL PROTECTED AND WORKS EFFICIENTLY. THE SHELL MYSELLA RANGE OF GAS-ENGINE OILS HAS BEEN DESIGNED TO MINIMISE DEPOSIT BUILD-UP AND TO KEEP YOUR ENGINE CLEAN. Real-world value delivery The Shell Mysella range of gas-engine oils has been used successfully throughout the world. A compressed natural gas supplier, which uses more than 130 gas engines from manufacturers such as Caterpillar and Waukesha to drive the compressors at its compressed natural gas outlets across Delhi, India, was very impressed by Shell Mysella S5 N. By switching to this oil, the company n increased the engines’ oil-drain interval from 850 to 1,100 hours n reduced oil consumption n increased filter life n enhanced equipment availability. As a result, the compressed natural gas supplier cut its annual operating costs by over $84,0001 . Shell Mysella S5 N – FOR EXTRA PROTECTION AGAINST DEPOSITS AND CORROSION Shell Mysella S5 N is a premium-tier product designed to meet the challenges posed by the latest high brake mean effective pressure (BMEP) engines. It offers an extremely long oil life to help extend maintenance intervals, and offers excellent engine protection. It is formulated to control deposits, maintain ring belt cleanliness and protect the cylinder liners, even under the high temperature and high pressure conditions seen in modern engines. wear protection The Shell Mysella range of gas-engine oils is designed to minimise deposit build-up and to keep your engine clean. For instance, Shell Mysella S5 N provides superior deposit control, even in the latest generation of high-output engines that operate in very severe conditions with very high piston temperatures and pressures. This helps to maintain excellent ring belt cleanliness and cylinder liner protection. oil life Shell Mysella oils are designed to deliver long oil life to help you maintain your operations efficiently and cost-effectively. For instance, Shell Mysella S5 S can provide extended oil-drain intervals in engines fuelled by sour gases such as biogas or sewage gas. These gas types may contain high levels of halogen compounds, which can rapidly reduce the oil life of more traditional gas-engine lubricants. system efficiency The Shell Mysella range of gas-engine oils has been designed to provide high engine efficiency. For instance, Shell Mysella S5 N helps to provide excellent cleanliness for heat recovery boilers, turbochargers and intercoolers. EXTRA PROTECTION: Shell Mysella S3 N demonstrated excellent ring groove cleanliness (left) and left the cylinder liner in an excellent condition (right) in a Wärtsilä 20V34SG engine after 16,000 hours of operation without an oil change. THE SOUR-GAS CHALLENGE An increasing number of stationary gas engines are fuelled by sour gases. Sour gases derive from the decomposition of matter in, for example, landfill sites, biomass digesters and sewage. These gases offer a unique set of challenges to the engine operator: acids in the gas can cause corrosion and the rapid reduction of oil life. In addition, siloxanes, which are commonly found in landfill gases, can cause excessive deposit formation. Shell has worked to understand the mechanisms behind these problems and has developed Shell Mysella S5 S to offer a long- life solution for engines fuelled by sour gases without increasing the oil’s ash content. A RANGE OF GAS-ENGINE OILS TO MEET YOUR NEEDS To meet the challenges of a wide range of gas-engines and applications, Shell has designed a portfolio of fluids that enable you to choose a product to match your technical and operational needs. 1 Savings reported by one customer. • 28. It enables high-quality process oils that have a more uniform chemical structure than those based on crude oil (Figure 1) to be produced from natural gas (Figure 2). Moreover, the Shell Risella X range offers several advantages over conventional process oils, including extra purity excellent performance in selected applications. Shell Risella X oils are manufactured at Shell’s new Pearl GTL plant in Qatar, which is the culmination of some 35 years of research and development. It is also the world’s largest source of GTL products: It has a capacity of 260,000 barrels of oil equivalent a day and produces diesel and aviation fuel, valuable chemical feedstocks and premium base oils for lubricants and process oils. Shell holds more than 3,500 patents covering all stages of the Pearl GTL process.
