Put your hand up if........
• You have brown hair
• Wear glasses
• Have a brother or sister
• Like football
• Can speak another language
• You like swimming in the sea!
• Born in this country
• Know what you want to be when you’re
older
All these
things help
make up your
identity
So what else makes up your
personal identity?
• Groups or clubs that you belong to - scouts,
rugby, choir....
• What your interests or talents are - film,
dance, sport, drama…
• What things are important to you.
• What your hopes are for the future.
• Which people are important to you.
• Your religion
• The languages that you speak.
• Which country you are from.
What you value also makes up
part of who you are.
Honesty Hard work
Caring Resilience
Laziness Kindness
Fun Rudeness
Hurtful Ambitious
We have talked about
personal values, but
can a country have
values?
We all live in Britain,
what do you think
British values are?
• democracy
• the rule of law
• individual liberty
• mutual respect
• tolerance of those of
different faiths and beliefs
British Values
• Democracy
Britain is a democracy – this
means that the people in Britain
vote for the people who make
the laws and decide how the
country is run. If we didn’t have
a democracy, just one person
might be able to make all the
laws and that would not be fair.
• The rule of the law
In Britain we have a police
force who make sure people
do not do the wrong thing and
break the law – this means
that we are safe.
• Individual Liberty
In Britain, as long as we do
not break the law, we can live
as we choose to and have our
own opinions about things.
• Mutual Respect
We might not always agree with
other people, but we try to show
respect for their thoughts and
feelings.
We can give respect to others and we
can expect other people to show us
respect.
•Tolerance of those of
different faiths and
beliefs
In Britain we accept that other
people might have different beliefs
than ours and they may believe in
different religions.
Let’s look at that list of
British Values again:
• democracy
• the rule of law
• individual liberty
• mutual respect
• tolerance of those of
different faiths and beliefs
Take a moment to think about how lucky we are to
live in Britain, a country with such strong values.
British Values Statement - Roding Valley High School is committed to serving its
community, the local area and globally. We recognise the multi-cultural, multi-faith and
multi-ethnic nature of both the United Kingdom and our school and seek to promote
harmony and the British values to all.
‘We ARE Roding Valley.’
Individual Liberty
• Students are encouraged to make choices within a
safe and supportive environment.
• Through a range of Student Voice and other
opportunities, students are given freedom to make
choices.
• Students have key roles and responsibilities as
Council Reps, Mentors, Prefects and Sports
Ambassadors.
Mutual Respect
• Our SMSC and R.S. programmes cover the
teaching of British values and mutual respect.
• We have Anti-bullying mentors, Student
Counsellors and Sports Leaders, who all promote
an attitude of equality, fairness and respect.
The Rule of Law
• Our motto (Aspiration, Respect,
Endeavour), classroom
expectations, code of conduct
provide a clear ethos and high
level of expectation.
• Behaviour incidents and
Rewards are reviewed regularly
and shared with all parties.
• Students have opportunities to
take part in a variety of
workshops, both as individuals
or as a cohort.
Democracy
• The School and Year council meet
regularly and adhere to the
democratic process.
• All students are involved in the
democratic process though
electing their Form Reps.
Different faiths and
beliefs
• Our R.S. curriculum provides a
broad and balanced education on
a range of faiths, religions and
cultures.
• SMSC and BV taught as both a
discreet subject and through Form
Tutors, assembly and curriculum
days.
