The 65th International Astronautical Congress 2014, the world's premier space event, will take place in Toronto, Canada from September 29 to October 3. The Congress theme - “Our World Needs Space” - will promote an exploration of the relationship between Earth and space and the ways that space activities help to meet our needs on Earth. D-Orbit, leader in the development of decommissioning devices for satellites, is taking take part in the Congress, participating in symposia and in scheduled technical sessions.

From an outsider perspective, the golden age of space might look behind us with the Apollo era in the Sixties. Yet, when we listen to some new economy entrepreneurs like R. Branson (Virgin group founder), J. Bezos (Amazon founder) or E. Musk (Paypal, TeslaMotors, Solarcity founder), space is accessible, ready to harvest and the space rush starts today! Even if the Silicon Valley ecosystem aims for the stars, technical hurdles might prevent all projects to succeed. Therefor, being able to put a satellite in orbit and land the launcher or to reach multiple times the space frontier with a same launcher really are impressive. These newsworthy successes also attract an increasing number of investors: $2.9B between 2000 and 2015 of which $1.8B in 2015 only. A disruption is on its way powered by deep mutations in the sector making old dreams now plausible like constellation and reusable launchers. In one hand, national space agencies now focus more on their advising roles. In the other hands, it gets easier to access existing resources and infrastructures. Incumbents reassure their averse-to-risk customers by producing a low number of expensive high-end custom designs with a big emphasis on quality to ensure high lifespans. Newcomers promise resilience thanks to distributed infrastructures of a higher number of low cost satellites (using off the shelf components). To do so, these pioneers use design to test approaches directly inspired from start-ups. They ‘hack’ technologies from other sectors with a ‘maker’ spirit and collect information from the ground with each generation of their products in a pure MVP mindset. First users of their own products, they make sure that the infrastructure they build is user centric and not technology centric. Doing so, they enable the next generation of space entrepreneurs to build new space applications (a few of which that might look like science fiction). E. Musk’s project to build a martian colony will be build on these layers. His firm, SpaceX, looks like it is a step ahead the competition with its full logbook, its tremendous technological achievements and its soon-to-be vertical integration in space with a constellation. Nevertheless, there are a few technical hurdles for them to pass like designing a powerful enough rocket or proving its ability to get to Mars and come back. Our conviction is that, alone, they probably won’t be able to gather the resources to build from scratch a sustainable colony with safe housing, adapted food production and low consuming ressources processes. When we see all the current benefits of the previous space programs, we are convinced that actors who will address these issues will be a step ahead to reap the fruits of the space conquest on their historical markets.

Strategy Innovation Proposal #2 1 7 Strategy Innovation Yearly, the airline industry makes lucrative, financial decisions as they pertain to collecting profitable assets for the business. As of 1930, more than 30 airlines have exercised the option of merging with another; some have succeeded, some have failed, particularly on a financial aspect. Running a business requires time, money, and of course the knowledge of running a business. Some people start off small; presenting a business in which focuses on a one area at a time. Eventually, that business can expand by globalizing its brand from state-to-state, country-to-country, or wherever their product will sell. Assessing the situation: One airline in particular is American Airlines; once known as American Airways, “now American Airlines”, was founded in 1930. With an operating income of more than 300 million dollars, and total revenue of 22 billion, they are the United States number one operating airline. Although final mergers pertaining to complete destination routes, and plane makeovers, American Airlines, and US Airways will create a monstrous foundation to keep the number one spot atop the airline rankings. Assessing the situation, an unlimited amount of information is available, and discussion amongst the two airlines merging is viewable via the company’s web site, or via an Internet source. As a strategist, assessing any given situation can be tricky; mainly because of the pros and cons presented to the business. American Airlines and US Airways operated under different methods of intelligence. These methods pertain to the airlines focusing on demographics; demographics are quantifiable statistics of a given population. As both airlines initially serviced multiple countries, unwanted problems can arise at any time. These unwanted problems are usually not seen by the innovators because an innovator cannot be everywhere at the same time. Identifying of the problem and opportunity: Identifying unwanted situations can only upgrade the opportunities for the airline as a whole. Merging US Airways with American Airlines will bring the fleet size up to more than 800 aircrafts. Some people may take notice of the 800 aircrafts as a positive statement to the business, whereas others who travel for a living may beg to differ; this is mentioned because of air traffic. A fact in which some people may not know is; the owners of an airline company is not guaranteed air slots or space, all proposals must be discussed and brought to the attention the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Conjoining two airlines and clogging the friendly skies with airplanes is sufficiently unsafe. A good aspect and opportunity of the merger is the notion of the airline having what I like to call, “cap space”. In my own definition, cap space will allow the airline to have a certain amount of aircrafts on standby incase of mechanical or passenger overbooked situations. Creative concept development: C.

Do you want to go into space? To float weightless? To look down at the whole Earth from the blackness of space? It’s an exciting time for private space travel. Many new space companies have been founded in just the last few years. Most are working toward the goal of ordinary people going to space. This presentation summarizes current space tourism programs, from weightless rides in a Zero G plane to trips to the International Space Station. It also presents an overview of near-future private space projects, including SpaceShipTwo suborbital rocket flights, orbital rides in the Dragon capsule, and the private Genesis space hotel currently being built in orbit.
